Cell's skin color in the games.

Post by Zitese » Fri Nov 02, 2007 6:44 pm

Cell's skin color in the anime is white, while in the games its blue.

Is there any explanation for this?

Eh....what? His skin is white in the games and in the anime.

Edit: You may be referring to the Sparking games shading style which makes him look somewhat blue. So I guess the answer I have is it's just shading.

His skin was blue in Budokai 1.

Budokai 1 was a little weird in some of the visual departments, if I recall correctly.

Yeah, colors are sometimes bizarre in the Budokai and Tenkaichi-series :/
I mean, old 2D-sprites got some colors right that the new games didn't O_o

Cell or the orange Kamehameha were some good examples ^^
Or take a look at Vegeta (Scouter) in BT-series - his late Namek costume is brighter than his Android Saga costume (in the anime, it was the opposite - late namek was nearly black and Android saga was more like the first saiyan uniform he wore).

So, well, just another example amongst many.

I am not talking about details, but there are some errors that anyone who even wasted a minute on looking on 2 or 3 screenshots at least wouldn't make.

Sometimes, I think, they do this on purpose somehow.
You know, to keep the show running and have a reason to create a next game where they fix 2 of 3 errors and build in another 1 or 2 so that they have enough to have another reason for another game and so on...
Just like not showing the first "saga" of DB GT or cropping every image on DBZ (perhaps in 10 years we will finally get a really non-cropped, good version).

This was partly off-topic, but I couldn't resist to write this down in this context ^^"

Yeah, which is why there were... um... zero blue Kamehamehas in the 2D games. All energy attacks where yellow in HD and I'm almost positive the Kamehameha's were all orange in the SB games.

Cell looked cool in Budokai with the blue tint. I actually perfer it to his look from the anime. The yellow kamehameha not so much.

If I remember correctly all of the Cell action figures (including the original Bandai ones) also represented him with a blue shade to his skin. It's probably just a stylistic thing as far as animation and re-producing what you see in the anime goes so I don't think it's much of an issue in this case.

Something I've always been curious about in the games since Budokai is Freeza's alternate color. In Buyū Retsuden (probably my favorite of the old games since it was the first one I ever played; I remember it was such a trip because the US version was nowhere near the Cell Saga at the time) had a blue-chrome Freeza, which seems like an obvious alternative to purple to me. Maybe it's due to the whole "cool" theme, but red just... doesn't suit him. And some of the other colors are rather annoying as well. Purple pants Boo, for starters. Then the red Omega Shenron, and the green-vested fusions. I just can't wrap my mind around these color choices.

As for shading, sometimes the colorists go too far, where the highlight actually becomes the body color, e.g. Venom from Spider-Man, who, though originally black, has been depicted as increasingly blue throughout the ages (and is in fact all-blue if you look at his sprites from the Marvel Vs. Capcom series). Although, there may very well be limitations on "safe" printing and screen gamuts for comic books and video games respectively that incite these odd colors from time to time. I know, at least with older televisions, bright whites and dark blacks are usually avoided.

Yet, there is bright white in the alternate color SS4 Gogeta and with Solar Flare, so that probably isn't the case. I suspect too much white would hurt one's eyes after a while though, even if it's within-gamut, as may have been the influence for the really "busy" background choice in the Room of Time and Spirit level. Or maybe they thought it would look cooler with more decorations. Just thinking out loud here.

Holy necroposts, Batman! (sorry, couldn't resist that~)

As for red Freeza, I love red Freeza. I always pick his alternate color scheme. Red's just an awesome color. And Omega Shenron's alternate is black, not red. Sure, the joints are red, but most of him is black (which is much cooler than his normal look). My only complaint is the red Cell Jr.s, I mean, why? Why not make them green like Cell? :?

Well Green Vested fusions are manga colors and Red Frieza was an homage to that one scene in the Goku VS Frieza battle where the colors changed for a brief moment and Frieza's purple parts became red.
