Remastered DVD's VS Dragon Box quality comparison thread
To be fair in the screencap comparison, the widescreen one really needs to be at it's full resolution.
We all know the Funi set is fucked, but to do a fair comparison you can't compare a full resolution cap from the Dragonboxes with a HIGHLY reduced capture from Funi's set, and as good as video comparison is, it's youtube, I'd much rather see both full resolution image captures of that frame.

Sure. I can upload the full resolution one. It's 50mb.godofchaos wrote:To be fair in the screencap comparison, the widescreen one really needs to be at it's full resolution.

Uhh... a full-resolution PNG of even just a 720x480 image doesn't even need to be pushing the 1 MB mark...SSJToreto wrote:Sure. I can upload the full resolution one. It's 50mb.
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
Yes, you can, but the point is, you can't make a legimate point using a youtube clip when it comes to video quality, nor can you go 'well that is obviously better then that' when one of them has been signifigantly reduced in resolution.Tanooki Kuribo wrote:I think this is getting kind of ridiculous. No matter how high of a quality a picture or movie is you can see the white lines (or lack of lines) in the season sets. It don't matter, they are there. You can see them in the lowest quality picture or movie clip.
and as i said "I'd much rather see both full resolution image captures of that frame".
So unless a single frame is full motion video, I'm pretty sure I was asking for a screencap 'insert stupid condescending wink here'

When it comes to pointing out those vanishing lines we most certainly can. The point Tanooki Kuribo is making is the errors are SO bad, its obvious regardless of encoded video quality.godofchaos wrote:Yes, you can, but the point is, you can't make a legimate point using a youtube clip when it comes to video quality, nor can you go 'well that is obviously better then that' when one of them has been signifigantly reduced in resolution.
If we were talking about a single, little scratch on the frame, then it would matter...

Better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt.

Yes, but part of the point is, if you are going to make a legitimate comparison of video quality, you can't use HIGHLY compressed and resolution decreased flash video, nor can you put up a Dragonbox capture at a proper resolution, then have a reduced resolution season set cap next to it and go 'well thats just obvious which is better'.
Screencaps both need to be of their 'viewed' resolution.

No, might even look worse.
But if you are gonna do a comparison, it should at least be a fair one, to take away the logical excuse that one cap is lower quality then the other, that way it is forced to stand on it's 'quality' level, rather then leaving an excuse of that it was lowered in resolution because THAT makes it look worse.

Kendamu is right. The only reason to really change to a much higher quality comparison is if the end-result of the comparison would change. I mean, do we need to get 1080P clips in here? No, because it will still not make a difference to show lines vanishing in motion.Kendamu wrote:So, does that mean that if we display a pic of that frame in proper resolution for both releases that the FUNi one will suddenly stop looking like crap?
By the same argument, I can claim that DVDs are highly compressed compared to the Blu-ray releases. But I don't think we need to have more bandwidth just to show the same fact.

Yeah that further proves the point that everybody was trying to make.
Be grateful the filler in Dragon Ball doesn't suck like the 3rd arc of Rurouni Kenshin.

Season 3 looks really good on TV Screens though, if you look past the dissapearing lines crap. It's probably the best looking Funi DBZ DVD, hands down.

I'm saying that in scenes where the lines aren't disappearing, Season 3 looks good, asshole.SSJToreto wrote:Yeah, bootleg dvd's look good too, if you look past the youtube like quality.jjgp1112 wrote:Season 3 looks really good on TV Screens though, if you look past the dissapearing lines crap. Aside from a few flukes like this one, Season 3 looks GREAT, and is a big improvement over 2 and especially 1's video quality. If they keep getting better, then I'll anticipate buying future sets even more.

I don't see how the two can be compared in a impartial way and not have a clear distiction between the two. One is made with superior master tapes and the other is done with a less quality copy of a good master. Season 3 can only look good after you see the comparison shots only if you have forgotten your glasses or contacts. The only way one can say that the two are the same or even just good is if one is BLIND. Lines missing may not seem like a big deal to some people who love the season sets, but it is a big deal on the level of quality that a company should have as respect to the people they work for. Perhaps it may not be entirely the fault of Funimation, but they should have said somthing and asked for better. They should have done the extra work and told Toei about the masters. If that isn't it, they should have thought about the possibility that maybe throwing the frames in a machine to remaster them wasn't the smartest thing they could have done. You don't throw somthing that needs to be dry cleaned in a washer, you take it to a place and they do it. I have seen good animes with good picture. I mean Akira and others that are nearly as old as me (20 somthing years) that look GREAT because the people cared about their work. Lets see some of that here.
