So, we know that Future Trunks killed Freeza and Cold and handed Goku the medicine... he also said that he came from 20 years into the future... yet, in the Trunks' special chapter, it was said that such occured 17 years compared to the main timeline. Most people take that as simply a mistake commited by Toriyama... but what if such wasn't a mistake and it merely means that the 2nd Trunks who visited the main timeline was a different one compared to the one who killed Freeza and Cold?

It's also said that Future Cell came from a timeline three years further into the future compared to the Trunks who participated in the CGs, which means he came from 20 years into the future and might have come, likely, from the same timeline the Trunks who assassinated Freeza and Cold came from... and that such Trunks was therein killed by that Cell.

Does it make sense?

I would interpret that to mean that the Trunks special takes place three years before Bulma would complete the time machine and Trunks using it to go to when Goku arrived back on Earth.

It's also said that Future Cell came from a timeline three years further into the future compared to the Trunks who participated in the CGs?

With the above in mind this would mean that Future Cell came from three years after Trunks first used the time machine, or six years after the Trunks special.

Remember that the passage of time really has no bearing on the dates one can pick when traveling through time. For example, in Back to the Future, Marty spends a week in 1955, and that has no bearing on when in 1985 he arrives (in fact he actually sets it to ten minutes before he left in the first place!). So Trunks can spend three years back in his future (likely so that the time machine can charge up again) and still set the date for when the Androids first arrive on the time machine.

Agreed with what the guy above said. There's no inconsistency here. The Trunk Special started 3 years prior to when the Time Machine was actually used. I explain all this in the timeline thread in my sig.
