Seems like I need some help.

Let me preface this by saying that, quite obviously, the intent with the project was always about simply allowing those who legitimately owned the product(s) to enjoy them in the way they wanted to enjoy them. This was seen by flat-out shooting down discussions brought up about other group... "releases"... (let's call them "bootlegs") floating around as torrents and such, because quite frankly... we're not interested in that.

(I say "we" as a general "we" and blah blah blah...)

Anyway...

So I took the *.srt file and created by own, self-approved script. I converted over all the name spellings to my preferred ones, same with attacks, etc. What I did from there was pull that file into SubtitleCreator (v2.2) and did some little italicization, musical-note images along with lyrics, etc. I then exported my own *.sup file to create the DVD with.

So this is what I'm ending up with:

Image

Interestingly enough, my stand-alone DVD player (which is an awesome LG upscaling player that also plays any data format you thrown at it) won't even show the subtitles when turned on. The Xbox 360 will show the subs when turned on (but look like the above screen-shot), and IfoEdit (in "Play DVD" mode after making the disc files) will show the subtitles when turned on, but they also look like the above screen-shot.

I've tried re-exporting the *.sup, I've tried changing all of the colors in SubtitleCreator (I'm not even using green anywhere), and I've even double-checked the default colors. All I've down is change it from white to yellow, so maybe that's messing up the anti-aliasing or something?

Anyone have any thoughts? I'd like to make a DVD encode for myself, rather than an XviD or something from the *.srt.

EDIT: Nope, just re-compiled switching the font main color to white and got the same green blobs.

You need to get yourself DVDSubEdit. Once you've installed it open the program and go to File -> Open full domain, note that you should already have a muxed DVD. What I mean by that is all the streams should be in the VOB container. It's going to take a while to load, about 2-3 minutes, depending on your machine.

Hope that helps, I'm not the best at writing how-to guides.

But... I don't have a muxed DVD. That's kinda the point :).

I ripped the movie from the Dragon Box, re-encoded the *.m2v (threw some of my own filters on it to clean things up slightly), ripped the *.ac3 file straight, and then did my own subtitles based on the *.srt included in the project's download files (the *.srt, the *.sup, etc.).

Guess I never said that...

OK so things are going to be a easier now. Here we go.

Re-rip everything with DVD Decrypter, it'd be easier for you to de-mux everything with DVD Decrypter so go to Stream Processing and enable it. Select the video and hit the demux option on the bottom, do the same for audio and rip to your HDD.

Image

Download the 30 day free trial of DVD-lab PRO, unless you're going to be doing more subbing work I don't recommend buying it. Install and open.

Image

Now assuming that the subtitles are perfectly synched with with your audio/footage this next step should be pretty damned easy. Just click the purple-ish Sub 1 button under Audio. This next screen should pop-up.

Image

Hit the Import button and find your SRT file and double-click it. So now all you have to do is make sure that all your settings are as they are in the image I posted. AG Foreigner-Roman is a really great looking font, if you don't have it you can use Arial 22pt Bold, that's another font that I use regularly. Also make sure you select Fat Outline if not the subs will look really weird. White or yellow font is your choice, both look good, I prefer white. Hit Generate Subtitle Stream, it will prompt you to save a file with an SP1 extension, just save it in the same directory as your M2V and AC3.

Note: Something I didn't select in that image is the box for Set this Subtitle always ON by default, make sure you do select it.

Now, press Ctrl-S and save your project. Do you want to create your own custom menu, or do you just want the movie? If you want to make your own nice custom menu I can write you a guide, it's kinda complicated. Well not so much, I mean even I learned but still it's kinda tricky.

For now, I'm off to watch Torchwood because Marsters is God.

I've used DVD-lab for years... just never for subtitles :P. All of our AMV DVDs and AnimeNEXT AMV contest DVDs have been done in DVD-lab.

For this project, there's no need for me to re-rip anything; I already have my *.m2v and *.ac3 to mux together in the end.

Anyone have any other suggestions for subtitles? Seems like I was doing everything properly, and there should be a general freeware solution for something like that (which is why I was playing with SubtitleCreator). I'll probably fart around in DVD-lab anyway, but yeah...!

Try opening up the SRT in Subtitle Creator again and go to file Open Pallete (IFO). Select the IFO from the Dragon Box and then re-compile an SUP file from that. Just a wild idea I pulled out of my ass, have no clue if it will work.

You wrote Masters on the main page, not Marsters.

Colors for the subtitles are stored into the IFO file itself, not in the VOB stream. The site should give you some other files, and IFOEdit has a feature to copy the subtitles colors, then paste the back into the files it created for you with the streams you ripped from your legit copy.

You should have IFOEdit open an IFO that has the colors, then paste the colors into the IFO file you've created. You may have to fool around with the menus a bit... maybe I'll post some screens later. Just for reference, I think I actually took the colors from FUNI's Bio-Broly DVD in the creation of the files posted at the site.

Also, the next step in the site is to offer different versions of the script (so people won't keep running into the same problems, and you can just use the files posted).

Any shot you can forward me your altered script if you deem it worthy of being made available?

(also, note that if you're creating your own subtitles from the SRT file, there is a good chance you'll have to manually turn on the subtitles to get them to display... some programs allow you to edit the subtitle stream and just have all subtitles turned on by default. Doing this manually is problematic, so I'd find a program to flip to to auto. I personally open the finished 'folder' in DVDShrink and edit the streams to be displayed on auto. Then I reauthor the disc with no new 'shrinking.' I'm sure there are other programs that can handle that step, I just haven't gone looking)

By the by, as the site mentions, burn the image to a disc image first and have a software DVD player play it for you. I use Nero's player to test the stuff out personally, and I used to run into the same green/grey/noncolored subtitles before I figured out what was going on a few years back.

What I ended up doing was going with DVD-lab Pro and importing the *.srt with my own spellings and such into there. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like: (1) it recognizes formatting tags (italics, etc.), and (2) I can't add them in that program, either. I was a little sad about this, because I usually italicize all honorifics and such.

Even before using DVD-lab, when I was just working with SubtitleCreator and IfoEdit in conjunction with each other, I tried both using and not using the provided *.ifo files; no matter which direction I took, I still got the green gobblies.

As for testing, I have DVD+RWs sitting around, so it's not like I'm making coasters, or anything. Between that for actually testing on hardware, and VLC for testing in software, it's not too big of a deal. Also, DVD-lab has a checkbox for automatically starting the program with the subtitles on, so that wasn't an issue, either... nor is just pressing the button on my remote :P.

Thanks for all the suggestions, everyone. It's fun playing around with all the stuff you actually own and not having to feel like a douchebag about bootlegging :P.

I usually make my DVDs in DVD Lab Pro, but the subtitles annoy me. Everyone else using it for subtitles is getting partially-transparent subs too, right? Anybody know a fix for that?

Transparent subs? Never had that problem. Here's what I got when I recently re-made a custom DVD for DB Movie 1.

Oh, sorry I forgot to mention it, I meant to. It's AG-Foreigner Roman. In that particular screenshot it's 24pt bold, with a fat outline set for 16:9 widescreen TV's. It actually looks better than that, it's just that Power DVD kinda fucked them up. :?

Really? Because I frequently experienced that Media Player Classic made my PC get "the bluescreen of death" and shut itself down after being frozen for about 5 minutes... needless to say, I'm not using it anymore.
