Is DragonBall a "Cartoon" or an "Anime"?

Discussion regarding the entirety of the franchise in a general (meta) sense, including such aspects as: production, trends, merchandise, fan culture, and more.

I still don't know why Invader Zim is always in the anime section, but to each his own. :P
I've wondered that too. (Although at my local Hollywood video, its in the "Special Interest" section, which is where the anime is(Well, the uncut anime))[/b]

I think it is due to the fact that the DVD publisher for Zim is "Anime Works".

Manga Entertainment don't publish Manga, only Anime and films, schwing. What the hells up with that?

Because, believe it or not, Americans actually can tell the difference between a shiny disc and a stack of paper.

Nope, never liked Spongebob, never will. I'm just that awesome. :P

NeptuneKai - Ya know...I never even noticed that. I always hit the Menu button on my remote to skip to the Title Screen instead of watching the ads and stuff, so I missed it. I just looked at the back of my box and it does say Anime Works.

Not that I was dissing Zim, I just wanted to know why it was there. I love Zim (more specifically Gir)! :D

I found the timing of this funny considering how this thread here just popped up this week. ANN's latest Hey Answerman! article touches on this very subject if anyone is interested:
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/answerman/2008-01-18

It's the first question at the top, though I recommend reading the whole article so you can see the very awesome GIF at the end. XD

And I just noticed my post count. I live a sad, sad life of geekdom. >>

I have a soul, I just have better taste and I'm not a mindless idiot that sits and stares at the tv with drool running down his chin. Spongebob, along with a large chunk of CN's original shows for AS, kill thousands of brain cells per nanosecond. They're the most idiotic drivel to every appear on television and should be banned and destroyed.

And I'm being 90% serious here. How anyone can watch Spongebob and not want to kill whoever created it is beyond me.

Anyway, for the actual topic at hand.... I used to be one of those "It's not a cartoon, it's an anime! Get it right!" kinds of people. I still tend to correct people on occasion, and cringe when I see an anime called a cartoon (or a cartoon called an anime as Avatar often is) but that's more for the fact I use the terms to distinguish where the show came from. And because "cartoon" brings to mind images of Spongebob (shudder) and Looney Toons more than exploding planets, ninja battles, and psychopathic serial killers (which covers three of my favorite animes 8) ).

The episode "Sailor Mouth" is pretty funny. Though will say, with a lot of the shows on CN like Gym Partner and Lazlo, I wonder am I out of touch with what kids like or what?

On topic, I've noticed people only get on about the whole anime vs. cartoon thing about anime series introduced in the US mid-90s onward. Shows like "Mysterious Cities of Gold", "Superbook", "Speed Racer", "Noozles", etc. get called cartoons without anyone getting mad.

Thin about Spongebob is...damn it's a dark cartoon lol In a lot of episodes something crazy happens. Like he gets badly injured, or Squidward blows up, or something else. Lots of weird crazy things going on there lol I will say this about Spongebob, I don't like that show, but it is without a doubt the ONLY thing I can watch on Nick until it gets late and all the good stuff comes on like Fresh Prince, George Lopez, Home Improvement, etc.

lol Hell yeah, and Looney Tunes rocked! Man, it's like all my favorites from when I was a kid are gone. And they don't have Boomerang where I live.

Man, best shows of all time, Looney Toons, Flinstones, Jetsons were okay, Tiny Toons, Batman: The Animated Series, Superman: The Animated Series, Spider-Man: The Animated Series, Histeria, Animaniacs, Pinky and the Brain, and a whole lot of others. I mean what do kids now-a-days have? I mean tons of Anime that I don't like to begin with (not an Anime fan, and even if I was, can't imagine liking what I see), and weird crap like Foster's Home for Disabled Imaginary Shit, or something. At least in the old days, they had nice looking cartoons, that looked at least remotely appealing to the eyes.

Entirely possible. XD I know they had exploding planets. Marvin's blown up a few. And they've almost certainly had ninja battles. Though I don't think they've had any psychopathic serial killers. :P Still, when I think Looney Toons I think more of Bugs Bunny and Road Runner and anvils squashing people like accordians.

I do admit, some of spongebob is pretty, meh(especially the newer ones >.<) But it does have some golden moments. Its Nick, not CN though =D

The episode "Sailor Mouth" is pretty funny. Though will say, with a lot of the shows on CN like Gym Partner and Lazlo, I wonder am I out of touch with what kids like or what?
I agree, tons of today's kid shows are getting crappy :S. Anything past 2000 isn't that good.(I miss the days of Rocko's Modern Life and Rugrats)

Did you just say Superbook?! Man, I loved that. That was one of the first anime that had was uncut(footage wise). It had nudity and everything...and it was dubbed by a christian company!
