It's been evident from practically the beginning that they're NOT taking the "Journey to the West" approach to the movie, rather a "Prequel to DBZ" approach. Apply this to casting and take from it what you will. But in light of this, they're definitely thinking "Saiyan" when it comes to Goku, rather than "Monkey King."

And I do, because he's an alien, and living among Asian-type people doesn't make him Asian any more than I would be black if I was raised in Harlem.

Saiyans are clearly Laconian Greeks.

That is pretty obvious, but I still don't blame anyone who would rather see more "Monkey King" and less "Saiyan" (at least in spirit, despite the apparent plot).

At this point, though I like discussing what we know, I really have kind of stopped caring about having an overall opinion of the movie for the moment. I'd just like to see some official production stills or something.

Haha, oh boy, now I'm sorry for even bringing race up again. In any case, it mostly bothers me because I feel it's part of making Gokuh more relatable to the target audience (as if asians don't love DB, whut?) along with the school thing. That and, as hard as it is to tell from a cartoon character, Gokuh has always 'looked' asian to me. Toriyama definitely differentiates his races to some extent through his style and that's just the conclusion I draw.

About the only one that looks Oriental is Yajirobi. he seems to be only Japanese person in the series.. (and perhaps Chichi)

If Goku were Asian he'de pass for someone from Western Asia - like from the Middle East or Turkey imo.

Goku was originally intended to be Chinese... If I somehow had the power to cast anyone I wanted in the movie, I would definitely go with an ambiguous Eurasian. I think that would be the ideal look for him.

I know you all know this but I just feel like I want to scream it out:
Well GOKU is not an Asian, nor white nor black...
GOKU IS A SIAYAN!
DBZ is world for himself, we all know that, I guess so?

BUT I'd choose an Asian to cast Goku, rather than black or white man.
even if I'd never really chose anyone of them...

Asians don't look nearly like Goku or DBZ characters, but AT LEAST they remind me more on DBZ characters than white or black.

But anyway's it's stupid to put a miserable and pitiful humans to cast any of DBZ characters! that's just one of bigger reasons why I'm so against this all...

Very few anime make their characters appear Asian. Id say the closest characters to even looking asian are Krillin and Yajirobe, who arent even in the movie.
