It baffles me that Raf managed to be as long as it was (94 minutes) without providing anything of substance. Hopefully this movie will be different, but the fact that it’s basically meant to be Fanservice: The Movie is a bit worrisome.
Re: Official On-Going Dragon Ball Super Movie Thread: "Broly"
How much longer were the extended editions? I would hope we get an extended edition but it would be rendered redundant if we get a retelling of it when Super comes back.(Which is fairly likely)Super Saiyan Swagger wrote:Not including the extended versions of BoG and 'F', it's the longest Dragon Ball film ever. I have a feeling that this movie will get an extended version once it airs on Japanese television just like with BoG and 'F'. I would much rather that than a retelling of the movie in the anime once it comes back.

BoG was originally 85 minutes and its extended edition was 105 minutes. 'F' was originally 93 minutes and its extended edition was 105 minutes.PFM18 wrote:How much longer were the extended editions? The 'F' extended edition was so weird. It had an opening scene retelling the Freeza arc through Future Trunks's perspective. Because his arc was on air at the time, they decided to add in some story stuff from that arc during the start and end of the film. If you cut those scenes out, the film itself was untouched. It wasn't like with the BoG extension where they added actual scenes in the film and fixed some continuity errors (example: adding a crater beneath Goku after Beerus knocks him out on Kaio's planet). I don't particularly like the extended version for BoG because the new scenes feel like they're padding out the film rather than adding to it.

Ah Gotcha.. Forgot to count the Mystical Adventure and the like of Early DB movies.. But I do agree with you though, I feel like Toriyama is gonna do Broli some much deserved justice.JulieYBM wrote:Movie #18 would be the 2013 film Kami to Kami. I think Toriyama will make Broli and the others just as enchanting as he did Beers and Whis in Movie #18.goku the krump dancer wrote:Movie 18?JulieYBM wrote:The cast and crew comments have raised my expectations pretty high for this film. I really get the sense that this movie is going to be just as well written as Movie #18 was. I think this new Broli is going to win out hearts over.
It's not too late. One day, it will be.

100 minutes is plenty of time to tell a good story. Again, it's all about how you utilize that time.
Re: Official On-Going Dragon Ball Super Movie Thread: "Broly"
They said the first 20-30 minutes will make us "cry" so it's safe to assume that will be the past section of the story which will leave 70-80 minutes for the present day section. I do agree that 100 is enough if it's well utilized but I'm a bit worried about time being wasted on gags cause Goten and Trunks are in the movie (why they're even part of the franchise is beyond me).BlueBasilisk wrote:100 minutes is plenty of time to tell a good story. I'm pretty indifferent to the 100 minute runtime, and am far more concerned with how they use that 100 minutes.

I just think it’s bullshit why they aren’t even allowed to reach a mere 2 hours. What’s so problematic about that? Lots of movies are 2 hours and this is supposed to be the biggest Dragonball movie ever created.!
Re: Official On-Going Dragon Ball Super Movie Thread: "Broly"
Wouldn't be surprised if this got another extended cut down the line.
When someone tells you, "Don't present your opinion as fact," what they're actually saying is, "Don't present your opinion with any conviction. Because I don't like your opinion, and I want to be able to dismiss it as easily as possible." Don't fall for it.

I wonder if the extended cuts are just scenes that were cut from the original due to pacing concerns or they actually, purposefully animate new scenes.ekrolo2 wrote:Wouldn't be surprised if this got another extended cut down the line.

Probably original cut stuff, lots of movies do that. I don't see them trying something like Resurrection F and adding in entirely new stuff.Doctor. wrote:I wonder if the extended cuts are just scenes that were cut from the original due to pacing concerns or they actually, purposefully animate new scenes.ekrolo2 wrote:Wouldn't be surprised if this got another extended cut down the line.

Wasn't the first version of Toriyama's script actually really short? We keep talking about the version they had to trim down, but that was after they added all the extra stuff in order to make it longer. Maybe they then realized it had too much fluff, and wanted to keep it condensed and more focused on the core of the story which was Toriyama's initial script.
Or maybe the reason is simpler than that; for the sake of animation quality, they sacrificed some quantity.

Agreed. Also going for a smaller cast might mean they wanted to utilize each character more efficiently.Lord Beerus wrote:I'm pretty indifferent to the 100 minute run time, and am far more concerned with how they use that 100 minutes.

Yep. Toriyama's first draft for the script was too short, so he added more to it along with some help. It then ended up being longer than expected. Akio Iyoku even says in an interview that the script was too long and they left it up to Toei to cut it all down. Here's the interview with Iyoku.Michsi wrote:Wasn't the first version of Toriyama's script actually really short? "The scenario we received at first, Toriyama-sensei himself said, “I think it might be a bit short…?”… And so from there we added several plot points. And then it ended up being unexpectedly long. (laughs) Now, we’re at the point where Toei Animation is expertly pulling it all together. (laughs)"

Kids will only find something tiring to watch if it's not visually stimulating enough. Remember, we live in world were some children found WALL-E, a 98 minute animated movie, and fantastic one at that, boring. I kid you not, that was a thing.sintzu wrote:They said kids would get too tired.GodVegetto91 wrote:I just think it’s bullshit why they aren’t even allowed to reach a mere 2 hours. Re: Official On-Going Dragon Ball Super Movie Thread: "Broly"
So, I'm assuming the first 30 minutes will cover Minus, Gine’s death, and Bardock’s rebellion.
And we’ll get more mini flashbacks scattered throughout the story later. Stuff like Paragus explaining Broly’s Abnormal power at birth and how he got exiled or Vegeta explaining some of past.
So in all, i expect 40 minutes worth of flashbacks
I expect 24 minutes worth of action.
And the 36 minutes left would be dialogue and gags.

I called it that Gogeta, Bardock, and something Broly related would be in the movie before it was even announced that it was a Broly movie.

Re: Official On-Going Dragon Ball Super Movie Thread: "Broly"
I'm not too surprised that the movie is only about five episodes worth of content. This means that there's a good four episodes worth of content not included, which will make adapting this arc into a TV series arc all the more likely.

30 minutes for dialogue in the present such as Goku trying to get Vegeta to fuse with him, Freeza making some deal with Paragus, etc.
40 minutes for the fighting.
