Official On-Going Dragon Ball Super Movie #1 Thread: "Broly"

How's the tension? One of main gripes with BOG is that there was too much comedy and too lighthearted.

Tone-wise, I think it strikes the balance pretty well between comedic and serious. A lot of that comes from Broly and his relationships with his father, Cheelye, and Lemo, which serve some goofy bits as well as genuine character bits as Cheelye stands up against Paragas on Broly's behalf. Then again, I'm a huge Battle of Gods fan so I may not be the best person to ask.

Tension-wise, however, I kinda agree with Ajay's review. You never quote feel like Goku and Vegeta aren't in control. I mean, there is occasionally the sense of "uh-oh, this could be a problem," but they always have something they can pull out to counter Broly. Even when things get desperate, Goku is like "lol let's fuse" and that pretty much settles things (after a jaw-dropping fight, don't get me wrong). I don't think it kills the movie, but your mileage may vary.

• The passage of time: is there really a timeskip in the past scene? And then 41 years later we see the present part?

His battle damage from the original special and the manga panel that referenced it, specifically in the scene where Freeza destroys the planet. It went by kinda fast so I couldn't tell if it was the special's armor or the Minus armor with similar looking damage. It didn't show how he got it, though, he just had it. There was also a whole group of other soldiers with him, so I guess it was implying that they were in the middle of a resistance already only to be killed.

I don't remember if the AGES were there, sorry. I may have looked away for a second to tell my fiance something or was just focusing on the visuals. There was a brief little transition during that part that showed Kid Goku and Vegeta becoming adult Goku and Vegeta and fighting, which transitions into them training at Bulma's private island at the beginning (all to the tune of Cha-La, which I think was the version they used at the Macy's parade).

Apparently Vegeta would have been the fourth king to rules Planet Bejita if Frieza never destroyed his homeworld. His father is Vegeta the Third meaning that there was a Vegeta the Second and Vegeta the first. For a guy who love Genealogy that's neat.

This new Brolli seems like had things gone differently he could've probably been a good king.

I found a leak version 30 minutes long and I've been replaying Broly/Lemo/Cheelai scenes all day. This trio is living up to my expectations.

Toriyama's character interactions + Nagamine's direction/storyboard is just <3 Props to Sumitomo for the fantastic job too! So far my favourite scene is when Broly talks about his childhood friend.

I still don't understand the point of bringing back Broly... he doesn't even add anything new to the story nor deepen the legend of the super saiyan or anything about Yamoshi... I know he is just there for fanservice but I though they'd do more about the story.

Again, I may have misremembered the exact number of years. I'm going strictly off of memory right now, haha. Still, while the math doesn't add up either way, I think that the rest of the movie is good enough to let that slide. I'm sorry I couldn't be much help on that front, though.

Huh... So it's not a 1:1 adaptation of Dragon Ball Minus, because his armor is damaged since the beginning of it. Kinda weird but no issues about that. I still would like to see Bardock with his bandanna though.

I think that the rest of the movie is good enough to let that slide. I'm sorry I couldn't be much help on that front, though.

By "rest of the movie" you mean all the beautiful battle scenes and animation? I don't really care much about those so even if the movie is the "visual spectacle" everyone is talking about, I can't ignore the mistakes in the plot. Sorry, I am that kind of guy, the worst you can find. These days I just want Dragon Ball to have some (coherent/accurate) story, but for some reason without caring much about other aspects.

Dragonball Super Broly is still at 4.1/5.0 from 625 Users and the highest rated Dragonball movie and that makes me happy and more excited to see the movie

Freezer basically asked them "You guys are Saiyans, right? but why doesn't he have a tail?" and Paragus explained why he had to cut off Broly's tail (watched that part on Youtube).

That doesn't surprise me at all. According to Geekdom, the visuals blow Goku vs Jiren out of the water.(Which previously was by far the best visuals in the franchise.) And Ajay said that "some of Toriyama's best character writing/development is in this film", "incredibly entertaining", and obviously he praised the visuals too.

Obviously there's criticism to be had with this movie, but it definitely is a way better written movie than RoF. But after hearing some of these reviews, I want a retelling more than ever.

Are we supposed to support Broly in this movie?

The guy that let's just say in another (non canon) parallel universe killed his own father, destroyed the planet of those little aliens and said that he is the devil?

They aren't even really similar characters. The only real similarity is that when they get pissed they go absolutely ballistic and mess people up.

I have two questions for people that have seen the movie, I dont care about spoilers, I'm gonna spoil the film for myself anyway.

1. How does this film rank among other Dragon Ball films? Is it Battle of Gods level, or around Bio-Broly level? (They're usually considered the best and worst films, respectively).

2. How good is the Broly character himself in this film? I mean, almost anything would be better than old Broly, but how does he compare to other characters? Is he as well written as Zamasu or Freeza, or is he as badly written as Fat Boo?

I wish I could get some evidence to support my view that the Ikari form is not necessary to achieve Super Saiyan C Type/Super Saiyan Type C.

You Can't, buddy! I would say that Ikari is the "core" and the preliminary stage of SS C Type and Full Power SSJ. In Ikari we can clearly see Broly' seize growing gradually, and also that "green" aura of him started to emit from him after entering Ikari mode. This means that the capacity to "use Oozaru power in Human form" is what makes Broly a "mutant" among Saiyans as king Vegeta described him.

Impressions, now that I've slept on it; while this is pretty general, there will be some spoilers:

Movie stuff:
- Animation is A+++++, jaw on the floor during 90 percent of the action scenes
- Broly is surprisingly the best part of the film, along with Cheelye and Lemo; he actually evokes a lot of pathos in this film. Yes, Toriyama successfully fixed Broly
- The Broly backstory is great, but the Minus material does little to justify its existence in this film. It's presented well, though. Bardock has his battle damage in his death scene.
- There's one bit when Goku jumps on a couple Freeza minions' spaceship and starts blowing steam out of his nose like a bull that nearly killed me. It felt like they lifted that straight out of OG DB. I NEED TO HEAR NOZAWA DO THAT SCENE

Dub stuff:
- The dub actors for the new characters were fantastic. Dameon Clarke also stood out to me with his Paragas.
- Broly talked less like Tarzan in the dub it seems, but Mignogna does deliver his speech in a bit stilted manner. Like, the lines themselves aren't written like broken English (though they aren't written too complex, either), but Mignongna kinda delivers them that way? I don't quite know how to describe it. He does a great job, though.
- Sabat, Schemmel, Rial, and the others are as good as you'd expect these days.
- Hearing Ayres again was a wonderful treat. As good as he was in this, you wouldn't even think he was sick.

All in all, I had a great time! Speaking objectively, I wouldn't put this above Battle of Gods; the story is paced about perfectly there whereas the Minus material kinda brings down the pacing in this. Still, I find it fantastic for the animation alone. The fact that we got a pretty good (if uneven) story and characters out of this along with the visuals is spectacular. A cut above Resurrection F for sure (and I still mostly like F despite its flaws). The dub is also good, though I NEED to hear Nozawa do some of this stuff. See it in theaters for sure! Also, feel free to ask other questions!

I have two questions to ask about Dragon Ball Super: Broly. One is about the portrayal of Lady Gine in the actual film itself and another is about the changes this canon version of Gogeta has in comparison to his noncanon counterparts of Dragon Ball Z: Fusion Reborn and Dragon Ball GT. How does the mother of Son Goku behave in the movie, like is she even more pure of heart than Son Pan from Dragon Ball Z? And what about the likes of Gogeta, does the Fusion Dance Warrior act similar to Vegito or Gotenks? Also does Gogeta victimize Broly: BR from the start?
