Looks amazing. The FUNi Blu-rays stand no chance against the TOEI HD Blu-rays remaster and anyone buying the FUNi BDs are just getting conned.

Man it's so weird and cool jumping between Movie 1 and Path to Power and seeing the art changes, haha. Also reminds me about how much I love Kid Goku.

Yeah, of course Path to Power came out in theaters not long after Dragon Ball GT had premiered on TV so it was obviously the same set of staff working on it for the most part. Heck, in the second half of the film Goku changes from his original all blue gi to the half blue/half yellow one he wears through most of GT. It's easy to tell where their overall look was derived from in relation to what was new at the time and i think it looks really cool especially set in the earliest parts of the original manga's/anime's story no less.

In particular i like how they actually did Bulma in her manga design, with both the yellow stripey outfit and purplish hair as opposed to the long established blue hair in the anime and the pink outfit she was wearing there.
DB collection related goals as of now:

1.) Find decent priced copy of Dragon Box Z Vol. 4 (Done)

2.) Collect rest of manga

3.) Get rest of Daizenshuu (2-7)

I believe that Goku changes his appearance within the first ten minutes of the film, switching just before setting out with Bulma.

It's quite odd how we now have four interpretations of that meeting scene. Manga obviously, then we have the anime which is interspersed with the Pilaf exposition, then we have the original movie that gets interrupted by the plot of the movie, and then Path to Power that visually shows the book exposition but moves the characters outside the hut!

Wow he switched outfits that fast?? Then again i haven't watched the movie in a while so yeah, anyhow it seems out of the three animated adaptations it was Path to Power that was at least closer to the manga in regard to their first encounter.

Well how it goes is that, after Bulma convinces Goku to join her on the quest, he says something like "Just a sec!" and enters the hut. Bulma thinks to herself about the "technicality" regarding the Four Star Ball flying away after the wish is granted, then Goku emerges from the hut with new pants, shoes, armbands, the Nyoi-bo on his back and tying up the Four Star Ball's sack on his belt. I think the implication is that we don't see this in real time, and in particular these might be clothes he feels are more appropriate for leaving home in.

Side-note: I like the unintentional duality of Path to Power and the Goku Jr. special, where one is about leaving Mount Paozu, and the other is returning to it.

Ah, good explanation there as i said before it's been such a long time since i last watched the film that i forgot the specifics of that. I'm wondering if they included Goku's GT outfit mainly as a kind of specific reference since the show has just started airing on TV about a month prior to the movie's premiere in theaters. Quite honestly it wouldn't surprise me if that was the reason they did, seeing as it was relatively new at the time.

It most likely was to tie into GT specifically, yeah. I don't mind the GT revision but I would have picked the original blue gi with red armbands that was used at the start of the episode. That being said, a more practical reason for using it could also be that if the animators were already working on GT, using Kid Goku's established design means that there's less mistakes through muscle memory, as the two are very similar at first blush.

I wouldn't be surprised if that was indeed the reason, seeing as the film had come just about a month after the show had started it's broadcast on Fuji TV. And yeah, it would have been nice if they had kept the original outfit but i can see why they changed it to the GT one. I figured if they likely had a good chunk of the same staff of animators working on the film at the same time as the show that would be easier to do, being that he wears that same set of clothes for much of GT it probably worked best for them to have him change to those.

Of course, the film was also in honor of the anime's tenth anniversary as well.

The movie02/03 dnr isnt as bad as i though it would be, still there's some detail lost in the clouds or the backgrounds. Can someone do a comparison between bluray/web?
I enjoy tinkering with video and audio.

Had a look at this shot in DB Movie 1 and there did look to be some smudging on finer details in it and think there's a tiny green tint added to it:

I can definitely see grain on the screen cap of the Amazon/Netflix version that's not even there on the BD, so that makes me wonder if the streaming release is using an up convert of the 16mm scans used for Dragon Box: The Movies back in 2006. That is unless it's coming from a different master that i am not aware of.

I don't know, I'm just guessing why the top one looks so different.

The new remaster for the Bardock special looks good.

No, the Amazon rip is not an upscale of the Dragon Box Masters. It how the blu-ray remasters looked before Toei applied DNR and censored some of the footage.

To me it looks like the better mastered blu rays. Wish they keep the grain in.

Yeah, I was honestly impressed with how crisp it is, its almost as sharp as the remastered films and looks far better than Kai (despite being a 720p TV rip).

Yup considering it's 16mm. Now all we need is for them to go overboard with the DNR on the Trunks Speacial
