Freeza and regeneration

Post by Kid Trunks » Thu Feb 14, 2008 5:03 pm

In the Funimation dub, after Nail grows back the arm that Freeza ripped off, Freeza comments "the ability to regenerate ones own anatomy. I'll just have to make a copy of that power because it just might come in handy one day". Is that a correct translation from the Japanese version? It just seems weird that they would set this up ,alluding to the fact that Freeza will be sliced in half, only for Freeza not to regenerate himself later on (but instead, he became mecha).

If memory serves, in the Japanese Freeza merely acknowledges the ability as useful, but notes that Nail's power has dropped considerably from using it. There's no inference that Freeza can mimic the abilities of anyone.

Confirmed.

"This is a surprise! You can regenerate? But though you may be back in one piece, your situation has not changed. It seems that you cannot also regenerate your energy, as well."

That always bugged me in the dub. I really don't understand why they made him say that.

It did sound pretty cool, though. I remember when I thought he put the regenerating info in his scouter. I never thought about him actually trying to do it; but, it was funny.

I think the writers intended to have it sound like Freeza was docking away the information for later use, like a "mental-note" but instead it came out sounding like he could mimic the ability. Which is, of course, ridiculous.

Yeh. Its seems like they were alluding to that. Also, I noticed in that episode that Freeza said to Nail "I'm five hundred thousand times stronger than you". Given that Freeza's powerlevel is 530,000, was this a misunderstanding during the interpretation, or did Freeza actually say that? Or did they do that on purpose for some god forsaken reason?

The dub has for a long time been completely ignored when it comes to Battle Power discussions, they're confusing enough without Funimation changing the numbers for no apparent reason.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Nail's BP was 42,000 or so?

So even if Freeza was talking about his max power (In the hundreds of millions) that figure would still be incorrect.

Freeza's scouter read Nail (full power) at 42,000 indeed. Then Freeza stated himself to be 530,000 when fighting seriously.

That is so totally over nine thousand. Alright fine. It's not funny anymore.

Yes, the dub and power levels, do not mix. Freeza tells Nail in Funimation that he's 500,000 times stronger then Nail, when he's supposed to just say "My power is 530,000."

So basically, by funimation logic.

Nail = 42,000
Freeza = 500,000 times stronger

Therefor: 1st Form Freeza (Funimation) = 21,000,000,000
Um... yeah...

They seem to be incapable of telling the difference between "8" and "9" thousand, either(also, though I'm probably not the first to point that out, if Goku's PL was "over 9,000!!!1!!" as they claim, why is it that he couldn't keep up with an 18,000 Vegeta playing around even in Kaioken? And did I mention Freeza was using 1% of his power against him? And that his Power Level somehow decreased to 1,000,000 upon transforming? Olawlz). Also, though I don't have any of those sh!tty so-called Ultimate Uncut DVD's, I had a friend of mine list his Power Levels on them and it ended up with Piccolo having a Power Level in the 4,000s when he charged up his Makankosapo o_O, so I can only surmise they got the PL's wrong there too, and Raditz's power got him to light speed!1!!1

Well technically, after each time Freeza transforms, his tail grows back...so.....regeneration?

I think it only grew back when he transformed into his final state. And when that happened, his previous form basically cracked off like a shell. Take that as you will.

Well, it just bothered me because it just caused unnecessary confusion.

I just saw it as a bad pun that was made, and not inputting info. Yeah, Funi did better with adding humor on YYH.

Exactly, didn't that line come right after the awful "HUR HUR BACKSCRATCHER" joke?

Yes it did. That dialoug infuriated me. It litteraly did. I went out and wrecked a beehive, and spent half an hour killing every last single one of those angry bees--and you know what? I was so pissed, I didn't even get stung once. Not even one bee was able to sting me before being killed. That's how mad Funimation's interpration of Freeza makes me.

I mean, come on--nothing can beat Freeza's cheerful, chatty nature while he tortured Nail. Him sounding a rather sincere sounding apology after he tore his arm off, compared to Funimatino making him tell some lame stupid joke!? Come the HFIL on. Why!? Why do they do this to Freeza!? He's supposed to be... well... a he.

Ryūsei Nakao is the best there ever was, there will never be another Freeza like him, no matter how long the human race is able to live and evolve. And his work just seems to keep getting better. When I hear the more recent Freeza stuff he's voiced, for the games and stuff, it sounds so darn good, and amazing. Like his voicework for the Sparking series--I love that cry of pain he delivers in those games, sounds almost like Freeza got kicked in the crown jewels, and it's a cry that Freeza never delivered in the anime, and yet, it still fits his character perfectly, in a hillariously awesome way.
