Will Toriyama revisit the Consequences of overuse?

Post by GreatSaiyaJeff » Sun Feb 03, 2019 8:34 pm

In the Buu arc, Elder Kai mentioned that the dragonballs shouldn't be over used. When the series ended, Toei probably used that line to help them do the Evil Dragons arc. With GT seemingly be more of an inspiration for videogames now a days, do you think Toriyama will do something to explore what his vision of that will be in an upcoming story arc, or do you think he forgot about it like others things?

I think what the Elder Kai means when he says the Dragon Balls shouldn't be overused is that if they use them too much, they'll become too reliant on them to solve all of their problems, not necessarily that the Dragon Balls themselves will cause trouble. That and the Dragon Balls could just as easily be used for something bad.

I really was not a fan of the idea that there was some kind of positive/negative energy in the Dragon Balls. They are wish orbs to grant wishes. That's it. They didn't need to be anything more. So I strongly doubt he would do something like the Evil Dragons

Hopefully, I think it’s one of the best concepts In the DB franchise especially for a final arc

I think the idea of existing some form of consequence for frequently resorting to the dragon balls, either to "fix" things or even to petty wishes, not to mention the fact the characters feel they have the responsability to watch over them, like some sort of self-appointed guardians, makes sense and opens doors for ideas and concepts. Indeed in GT they explored this angle to inspired them into the evil dragons arc - and despite the underwhelming execution (in my opinion) - it was an interesting concept.

However, I believe the fact that multiple sets of dragon balls existing and that bad people are capable of using them to wish for potentially dangerous... wishes, is already a consequence. For that reason I don't think Toriyama needs to revisit this theme specifically, although it doesn't rule out the possibility of exploring it eventually.
I'm back!

Lurking around here since 2014. Just an old fan who regained his passion for Dragon Ball since then.

I personally liked it. By making it an internal mechanic to the Dragon Balls, the consequence of using them too much comes from a very neutral standpoint. If it were to come from, say, the Guardian of Earth, or the Supreme Kai, or Zen'o, then part of the consequence can be pinned on their (nonetheless justified) opinions on the use of the Dragon Balls. By making it completely neutral, it feels more like a natural consequence of the universe or like an act of God rather than someone specifically punishing the characters for it.
