Saiyan growth spurt?

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

Saiyan growth spurt?

Post by Sun_Wukong » Sun Jun 20, 2004 2:41 pm

Since Saiyans age slower than humans, do they grow slower also? It seems that Goku and Vegeta were still getting taller, even towards the end of the series. Not to mention that Goku gained about 3 feet when he turned 18.

I've always figured that Full blooded Saiya-jins tended to grow slower than Humans, and that it was rather random when it came half breeds... Another good example for this is the comparison during the world tournment saga between Goku and Goten. The overlay of Goku was actually from the 21st Budokai when he was 12. Goten's about 6 or 7 and they were the same height, and I know they didn't shrink Goku any for the comparison because Goten's about as tall to Roshi as Goku was then...

Also, though it's not a very good source of information, look at Pan and Bra in GT. There's only a years difference between them but it looks like more than that.

just attribute it to Toriyama and Teoi not being able to make up their minds. At the begining of DBZ Vegeta is as short as Kuririn, and in the Cell saga he's sometimes as tall as Piccolo.

It's just that Saiyans have longer adolescent stages, ie: their "teen years" start earlier than Humans, and end later than humans too.

...Although that would proove the opposite of what happened but hey, whatever Toriyama says must be correct, right? :P

I'd always thought the slower aging automatically implied slower growth, since growing is a part of getting older. It would be a very reasonable explanation as to why Gokuu was such a runt, anyway. In Vegeta's case, I think it was just an inconsistency in character design. Just between the beginning and end of the Saiya-jin saga, his face gets so much older.

The hybrids all look right for their age, except for Bra and Pan, because no one can agree on how old they are. :?

I always wondered why Goku was so short when he was 12 and 15 then suddenly about five to six feet when he was 18.

Most likely it just started out as a classic comic: magically NOBODY ages. After the Piccolo saga is probably when Toriyama had a lightbulb go off over his head.

Then he yeld at his kid to stop playing with the light switch, realized how much his kid's grown and that the DB charas should grow as well.

Both Goku and Krillin grew a bit during the time between the 21st and 22nd Tenkaichi Budokais. It's more noticable in the manga than it is in the anime.

Well, that would explain why Vegeta looked like he was still going through puberty when he came to Earth (bless).

Yeah, I think with Vegeta it was mostly cus he was a new character and Toriyama was learning what style he wanted him drawn as.

I've noticed that Goku, Goten, Trunks all roughly appear to be the same height when they're teenagers. Although, Gohan seems to be a bit taller. Is that his half human blood kicking in?

Why does everybody randomly consider Goten and Trunks to be pure blooded Saiyans today????

Well, at the beginning of Z, Kuririn is almost as high as Kame Sennin, but one year later, he's just a few cm higher than Gohan. Then a few years later, he's somewhere inbetween.

I never got the impression that Goku grew at all during Z. Sure, he gets thicker and more muscley, but he seems to stay the same height. (Same deal with Yamcha and Tenshinhan, really.)

Goku had some time off to get tall I doubt it was all at once - all of the fighter characters grew a little bit befoire the 23rd Budokai due to the time period skipped over. Thats really all there is for that. When we have time gaps we see them grow - a techn ique to add to show time has passed - when we dont they tend to be about the same.

How many times have you seen Vegeta eat, though?

Also notice how most of the characters in DragonBall are kinda "chubby" lol

Well, that was a useless post.

Vegeta is seen stuffing himself more than once, though I believe most of it was filler. It certainly shows he's got appetite, though.

And yes, Goku is seen to have grown quite a bit between the Urunai Baba stuff and the 22nd Budokai. Just compare volume 8 to volume 10 of the manga, and his growth (And Kuririn's) is quite obvious. And that was over a span of two years... Doing some calculating, seeing how much he grows during the coming three years is pretty accurate, actually.
