I'm somewhat curious if FUNimation gets their hands on the TOEI HD DB & DBZ Movie Blu-rays to release but then they would have to use the TOEI English titles.

And it'd have such memorable titles such as: "Explosion of Dragon Punch" (M13), "The Strongest Guy in the World" (M2) and "Super Guy in the Galaxy" (M9). Cause, you know, everyone knows the movies by those titles!

Yeah, some of those English Toei titles there sound just bland as hell when compared to even the kinda sorta spoiler-y original titles. Even some of FUNi's own sound better than that.

Hmm i didn't think if that, of course it seems that his name being run together as all one word had been pretty much firmly established at some point both in the manga and anime rather than being separated as it initially was in Shonen Jump.

As far as first names go, Tenshinhan is easily at the top of the list, which is what makes it unusual in Dragon Ball, at least to me. Although funnily enough Yajirobe beats him on syllables, haha.

They are the biggest problem, imo, they are the ultimate rights holder aren't they? They should have clamped down on the likes of Toei and Bandai's bullshit before things spiralled out of control to where we are now, Toei lied themselves into censoring the movie BDs, Bandai realised they could get away with producing shit quality and charging up 600% more than they should etc. Shueisha just happy to let the integrity of the franchise dwindle because MONEY! The idea of putting more effort in something and getting more money in return is something of a myth right?

Broly should have been a fresh start for the entire franchise, clean slate let's stop all the BS and treat the franchise right.... but nope things have arguably gotten worse, Bandai regressed hard and now have basically full control of DB merch (which is just fab!) and Toei well they allowed this Z 30th BD fiasco to happen for one and over in Japan, their limited edition release of Broly aside from the box art has plethora of screenshots and re-used promo art... are you kidding me? The most low effort release they could possibly f**king do... Literally you can print your on screenshots on gloss paper for like 10p! I did exactly that for ResF back in 2015! Similarly Bandai charged fans 8000+yen for Premium Cardass cards, there were about 80 and 70 were screenshots....

The way DB is being treated by these companies is so godamn soul crushing...

Truly sad part is in 5,10,15,20 years we will be having the same conversations again and again!

It's not the Japanese's fault if a name they make has a definition already. On the Portuguese dub they changed Chi-Chi to "Kika" and the Latin Spanish dub also changed Chi-Chi to "Milk". In Portuguese that sounds fairly similar to "piss" and in Latin Spanish that's like a slang for "breast".

Just great. If a name already has a definition, just fucking change it. Problem solved. Right? Not really.

I'm surprised the Portuguese dub uses the name "Songoku" (not quite the same as Son Goku) because the "ku" part may remind people of ass (cu).

...It's really not that complicated. They simply took the first half of the title rather than the second. And translated it in an admittedly dumb-sounding way, which is par for the course with these titles.

Sure but that's not what localization is about. Localization would be making names and meanings work from one language and culture to another, but sometimes this just isn't possible. For example, a trivia question in Persona 5 was changed for the international release due to how heavily it leaned into knowledge that is second nature in Japan but nowhere else. Similarly, many of the localized names such as "Urisu" and "Birusu" are adjusted to Whis and Beerus, so that the name pun is still visible without being too literal about it.

In the case of Tenshinhan to Tien instead of Ten, personally I think that was the correct choice because Ten has a number association that is not present in Japanese, so while Tien is ultimately made up it helps any unwarranted comparisons, and thus to me is arguably more authentic.

That one is actually appropriate, since in Japan Chi-Chi is slang for breasts as well (one Chi per tit, get it?).

It's like someone's name is Mike but he's called Andrew.
