DBZ/GT thoughts in other series

Post by Super Sonic » Thu Mar 06, 2008 3:19 pm

Don't know if this really fits here, but have any of you guys ever seen in other franchises one series being compared to how GT was talked about it being better to not watch or skip? For me recently on another forum I mentioned how I didn't really watch Beast Wars when it was originally on, and was going through it now. Another member gave advice to me as:
Stop after Season 3 and do NOT watch Beast Machines. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DO NOT WATCH BEAST MACHINES.

They are sooooo right about that. >>

That's as bad GT? Well you know as well as I do about Sonic about the final Kenshin OAV. The Bount Arc in Bleach is pretty "meh" I would say, but that's not a seperate series.

If you've ever watched Rurouni Kenshin anime passed the Kyoto arc, then you're brave, same if you watched the crappy OVA Reflections. They're so disappointing in every way it's not even funny.
Be grateful the filler in Dragon Ball doesn't suck like the 3rd arc of Rurouni Kenshin.

I've never looked into the anime version of Rurouni Kenshin, so please forgive me for being ill informed. Is Reflections REALLY that bad? It's just a retelling of Kenshin's past with his former wife is it not? Judging by the covers, the animation isn't that bad at all is it? If anything it looks pretty slick.

God, I wish I hadn't seen Beast Machines, it ruined Beast Wars for me, it really had no redeemable qualities, and the character designs were rubbish ("I am transformed" WTF)

I don't view GT in the same way, if I switch brain off, I can watch GT, not to mention it had an ending I absolutely adored, not that I take it as canon.

Lmao atleast GT had a pretty good ending. Beast Machine's ending was a super cheese-fest. *thousands of robots running through a field of luscious green grass...

I suspect that's because the show was a flop and they had to wrap it up quick. (I will never forgive them for ruining Rattrap's character. :( )

And for the Kenshin OAV, it's the not the first two that are the problem. Those are known as "Samurai X: Trust" and "Samurai X: Betrayal" and I highly recommend them. Some of the best OAVs ever made. "Reflection" is the final OAV made and that is supposed to take place after the events of the series, and covers Kaoru remembering events such as the Enishi arc. The thing is an "emo, angst-fest, non-sensical, out-of-character" waste of any Kenshin fan's time. It was not well received by Watsuki either. He hated the ending especially since it didn't fit with his view. I'm of the belief that even if an anime looks good, if the story's crap or makes no sense, then it's "seeya!" for me. I always advise people interested seeing in Kenshin to check out Trust and Betrayal, watch up to the end of the Kyoto arc in the TV series, and then just finish the series by reading the manga.

I always thought that the Enishi arc was terrible. Watsuki's art style changed so much; less detail involved, less interesting battles, and a very anti-climatic final battle between the heroes and Enishi's allies. Anyways, thanks for the info Jerseymilk.

I haven't watched Rurouni Kenshin in 5 years. Isn't the Kyoto arc when he fights that burnt guy covered in bandages?
Yamcha: Do you remember the spell to release him - do you know all the words?
Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!

Jerseymilk pretty much said everything I was going to say. I don't consider Reflections canon whatsoever and it's the DBGT of Rurouni Kenshin.

I actually thought that Trust and Betrayal was great but...the manga version was just so much better. It felt more like Rurouni Kenshin with the humor elements mixed into the seriousness of the story whereas the OVA adaptions only focused on the seriousness and was devoid of of any comedy, there wasn't even a light pun, nothing it was just, serious. That's maybe because I read the manga first, but the OVA was just too sad and depressing for me :?. They changed a good amount of stuff from manga to anime in Trust and Betrayal as well. Quite possibly the last 20 minutes of the OVA is different entirely in the Manga.
Be grateful the filler in Dragon Ball doesn't suck like the 3rd arc of Rurouni Kenshin.

Guess it's a good thing I've never seen the Kenshin OVAs. Got wierded by the changed art, but also from a clip I saw from Trust and Betrayal, I didn't like Kenshin's English voice there. I love Richard Cansino's Kenshin, but the other guy I wasn't feeling, maybe because I was so used to Richard Cansino's. Similar thing happened when me and my cousins were watching the Kyoto arc. Sojiro voiced by Tara Jayne (Bulbasaur/Mokuba Kaiba) we thought was ok, but when it suddenly changed to Melissa Fahn (Gaz/Ed/Rika) we didn't like the sudden change.

The Naruto filler before Shippuden. >.<!

Don't castrate me. I just got impatient and wanted to see the story progress. I guess it's not so much the content of the episodes themselves, but the fact that it's soooooo damn long. I couldn't bring myself to watch it all.

I pretty much watched like...half of the fillers, and then just decided to stop watching -_-. Once Shippuuden premiered, I hopped right back on board. Still though, the progression right now is quite slow..

I don't think anyone would castrate you for that. We agree with you. XD

People can complain about DBZ having stretched out fights, but at least we didn't have 80 weeks of straight filler to contend with. XD

As for Shippuuden going slow, I'd prefer it that way so we don't have to repeat the "filler horror" of the original series. >> Though there were couple of funny ones in there. "laughing Shino" was priceless. XP Anyway, I follow the manga as well so I don't get too impatient.
