I have watched the entire DBZ series from start to finish multiple times, with different box-sets, but something has always bothered me and I can't find the answer online.
During the Saiya-jin saga, while Goku is training with King Kai, there is an episode where he needs to hit Gregory, and the very next episode he learns both the Kaio-ken attack and the Genki Dama.
During the preview for the next episode, which is episode 15 in the new Funimation box-sets, it shows scenes that were not in any of the previous episodes. It shows him flying through what appear to be pillars on King Kai's planet. The narrator says something about how Goku has now learned the Kaio-ken attack and the Genki Dama, but there was never an episode where you actually see this. The scenes this preview shows were never in any of the previous episodes.
So my question is, is there some missing footage in the Anime? Or is it supposed to be that way? Why would footage be shown in the preview that was not in any of the previous episodes? I have provided the episode descriptions from the Funimation box-sets below for reference.
Can anyone please shed some light on this for me?
14. "The Legend of the Saiyans" 1997-01-17 20
Goku's next task is to hit Gregory, King Kai's grasshopper, with a hammer. While taking a break, King Kai tells Goku the legend of the Saiyans and his connection to the warrior race.
15. "A Black Day for Planet Earth" 1997-01-24 21
Goku completes his training, learning the Kaio-ken and the Spirit Bomb, but the Saiyans finally arrive on Earth. Goku is wished back to life and rushes down Snake Way, but unfortunately, it will take him two days to reach the battlefield.

The answer is there was new animation (not from the last episode) added in the recap before the title card to explain that Goku's learned the Kaioken since the previous episode.
They do something like this near the beginning of the Boo Arc with Gohan going to school if I remember correctly, but it was less confusing there and made more obvious it was something new. In the scene you're describing, it really does make it look like a recap of a previous episode.

Thank you!
I haven't had a chance to read the manga yet, so I didn't know if it showed any part of Goku learning the Kaio-ken or the Genki Dama.
One thing I am debating to myself is whether or not Toei should have made an extra filler episode showing Goku learning those techniques. If they would have done it right, I think it could have been a great episode.

I think that's a little far fetched to be hoping Toei could make good filler. :p Though the drivers license episode was pretty hillarious.
Or maybe Pioneer/Geneon/FUNi could have made an episode where Goku uses his ultimate "Triple Strike" attack he was "going to use" on Oozaru Vegeta.
Do other people remember what I mean, or am I crazy? I was sad to find out it was just a dub thing, cuz I remember watching the opening Cha-La and all, and it shows the three fireballs descending to crash into the ground and always thinking that that may be the "Triple Strike" Goku talked about, but alas, I was but a naive child :p
