Why 2 graphic novel editions?

Post by klikmaster » Sat Jun 19, 2004 4:33 am

Why have Viz brought out dragonball graphic novels with the white covers and ones with the red covers?
Personally I like the white, because I prefer the design, and the red one has small pages that are printed right into the gap between each page so you can't read it
So why are there two kinds? If you don't know what I mean, look at the differences here:

the red one is a "shonen jump graphic novel" for some reason they felt a distinction needed to be made.

They also did the same with DBZ. It's annoying as I have DB 1 - 10 with a white cover and DBZ 1, 2 and 5 with a white cover. Because the SJ books are smaller, my spin image doesn't line up properly

I dont really mind the change, hell if the GN's can be sold for cheaper, hell I'm down. I have no problems lining up the old editions with the new, but I can see some people having problems with them if they are like very much into their collection and want it to look perfect

saw DragonBall volumes 1-7 being sold at Borders in a nice box for only 49 bucks. I think they'll have a box for 8-16 as well ^^ If you already bought all of them though, you can order the box yourself. I think the DBZ GN's have that same promotion going on.

I will admit that I prefere the smaller size, and the box is nice, though I can't get it as I already have most of the books and I live in England.

I just hate the fact that the comic is printed so close to the spine. I have 2 white ones and 1 red one

It's not so much that there are two kinds. Rather, one replaced the other.

Originally, all of Viz's properties were seperate. And Dragon Ball was arguable the most popular. With the sales they were getting from it, they decided to go all the way and import/buy the "Shonen Jump" name, and start a monthly collection of different anime. With that, they apparently decided to redo all their existing properties, bringing them under the "Shonen Jump" name, and redesigning them. Hence the new, red covers and smaller size (which comes with a smaller price, as noted).

I'm not completely certain, but I think that the new size is closer to the size of the original Japanese graphic novels, which might also have something to do with it.

In any case, you can only get the white novels up to a certain point, when they were replaced with the red ones. And red ones of the earlier novels were also released.

It is kinda stupid though I mean they aren't ceaper. They ruined the design on the covers. The red ones also seem to small for me, they should have finished the dragon first :?

I'm getting all the ones that were originally non-SJ editions, mainly because I prefer the bigger print. Same goes for the volumes of Ranma I don't currently have.

Err... yes they are. By about half, in fact. The original DB graphic novels went for $15.95 US, while these smaller ones are only $7.95. If someone's raising the price on you to 200% of their actual value, you're simply being taken advantage of (but not by Viz). :?

Price of the graphic novels vary. If you buy the white ones now they cost the same, if you search amazon you see varied and mosty cheap prices on the white ones while the red stayed the same.

Er, that's because the white ones are:

1/ Old, and
2/ Likely to be second hand.

Of course they're going to have dropped the price. People are less likely to buy them when they can by an almost identical product for over 1/3 less. Lowering the price is the only way they're going to get rid of their stock.

You weren't the person complaining about the graphic novels costing $20, were you?

Its not stupid at all O.o its MUCH MUCH cheaper.

And speaking as an owner of Japanese Tankuban - the small size is NOT an issue

and if it IS then just buy Shonen Jump - they have utterly huge print and it comprises 90% of my DBZ manga (although I have comic form for the Vegeta saga also which is the same size as SJ).

Its rare and harder to get!
I have DBZ 1-10 in that style , it was one of the first manga to kick off in America
Err... actually, the smaller ones are better.

For the original DB, they're guaranteed uncut (where there's both edited and uncut versions of vols. 1-3 floating around with white covers), and they fit with volumes 11-16.

For DBZ, they've corrected some mistakes here and there (like changing "Chi Kung Blast" back to "Kikoho"), although the minor censorship inherent in an A-rated manga is present (but no worse than when it was in its larger form). These will also fit the dimensions of Shonen Jump-edition vols. 11-26.

So, anyways... why waste $15.00 or more on something, when you can get something better for less than $10?

Did they change "Light of Death" back to "Masanakapapsopowoopydoowopko" though?

I've never understood the need to change the name of that attack. It's Piccolo's best move, and honestly, it's not at all hard to pronounce. Makankosappo. It's said exactly as written, just sound it out.
SJ Dragonball Graphic Novel, Volume 9, page 60. That is all.
