I really dont pay attention to the dubbing group but is the ocean group the group with the vegeta who made the 9000 line famous?

I didn't like some of the GT voices because it sounded like bad imitations of FUNi's voice actors (like how Sabat sounded like he was trying too hard to sound like Drummond when he started Vegeta) but I liked their DB dub and thought a lot of the voices were better than FUNi's. I liked their choices for Goku and Muten Roshi.Timo wrote:No. The DBGT (and the DB) dub were done in Calgary (instead of Vancouver) by one of Ocean Group's other studios (Blue Water) with different voice atcors.

The sad thing is, he didn't sound anything like Drummond.Casual Matt wrote: (like how Sabat sounded like he was trying too hard to sound like Drummond when he started Vegeta)
As for the Blue Water GT dub, too many of the voices sounded similar to me, not to mention when Goku and Vegeta fused, Gogeta just sounded like some regular dude.
Keeping the original background music was nice though, Mike Menza's horrible "music" made watching GT dubbed impossible for me.

I remember being annoyed because during an interview Mr. Sabat seemed to claim responsibility for that line.Sun_Wukong wrote:

Since this is about Ocean, how did they get the rights to dub DB/Z/GT after Funi got the rights to do North American distribution? And why is it that they like to replace nearly all of the SFX in the various DB series with something stock sounding in the dubs?
Be grateful the filler in Dragon Ball doesn't suck like the 3rd arc of Rurouni Kenshin.

They might have home video distribution rights for all of North America (or at least the three big countries, apparently), but that doesn't mean they have TV rights for all of North America. As far as I can tell, they only have TV rights in the US (and possibly Australia too...?). Mexico has obviously had a Spanish language version since the mid 90's, and I believe Canada has had a French dub at least as long as an English one started airing there.Vekurotto wrote:Since this is about Ocean, how did they get the rights to dub DB/Z/GT after Funi got the rights to do North American distribution? But I'd guess that whoever it is that does have the TV rights in Canada (and similarly for the UK, for that matter) decided to make their own English dub rather than use FUNi's for whatever reason. Either that, or FUNi actually did have some TV rights in Canada and the UK until then, but lost it, and whoever replaced them decided to use new actors for whatever reason. (Though they pretty much reused FUNimation's scripts, didn't they? How bizarre.)
This would also explain why the post-1998 Ocean episodes have never been released on DVD, though. FUNimation holds the video rights in Canada, and whoever it is that holds the license for most of Europe (AB?) apparently has the UK rights.

Just a couple of videos that I found to be relevant:

None of which are mine of course.
And this one is just because I love how much more convincing Scott McNeil sounds when talking to Buu.

I'm a huge fan of Drummond's Vegeta. Sabat did ok, but Drummond really brings out the psychotic nature in Vegeta's personality; Sabat just made his Vegeta seem like a grumpy dwarf.
Scott McNeil is also a better Piccolo than Sabat too. Piccolo is more then just a tall green guy like Sabat makes him out to be, Piccolo is a reincarnated demon king, his voice needs to be manacing.

I'm pretty sure everybody hates the dub GT soundtrack.Kid Trunks wrote:So Mike Menza is responsible huh? Finally, I know who caused me so much anger! Probably the most boring, monotonous, lackluster soundtrack in the worlds existence. Every piece of music sounded so..... lifeless, and the same. I hate it with a passion!! (and I'm a dub fan).
I mean there are Kikuchi fans, Faulconer fans, and Levy fans, but I've never, ever seen a Menza fan.
Well, at least there's something all "dubbies" and "subbies" can agree on.

Drummond was very good in capturing the high tones and sinister nature of the earlier Vegeta (who bordered on brilliant), and I'm not much of a fan of Sabat to begin with. His older incarnation was a bit too deep and strained. He sounds much, much better with a more placid voice as his performance at the end of the Cell Games goes to show. Still, I feel both are such a far cry away from Ryo Horikawa (who captured Vegeta and his emotion in all facets better than any of the English VA's in my opinion).DemonKingPiccolo wrote:I'm a huge fan of Drummond's Vegeta. As for Scott McNeil, he's great in that he captures the merciless edge of Piccolo that can't quite be trusted. With a twinge less raspy quality to his voice, I think he'd be very apt for the nature of the role. Post-completion, Sabat works well for me - he captures a tranquil depth in tones that the Toshio Furukawa didn't in Piccolo's voice (despite a fantastic performance that captured the aforementioned merciless quality in Piccolo), and Piccolo is supposed to be a drastically different person after his merger with Kami-sama. I'm of the opinion that Sabat conveys this. I also feel that Sabat's voicework makes for an excellent Kami-sama. In terms of less the performance and more the doddering, pensive old Namekian that he captures.
As for the clips... Sabat sounds amazingly terrible in both versions, as well as in the "Over 9,000!!" clips. And the new Boo sounds much better in the FUNimation dub, with the proper depth to his tone captured (though I feel the Seiyuu captured the teenage-sounding qualities better). The OCEAN VA of Boo doesn't sound all that great in my ears.

I can understand how the Ocean dub group had the rights for UK and whatnot. From what little I've seen of the later Ocean dub series... I have to say that they made a very poor choice in music. Their music was even worse than FUNimation's! I'm curious as to why most of their dialog is exactly the same as FUNimation's. Are they allowed to do that? lol Also, are their episodes uncut like FUNimation's (obviously taking out middle fingers and stuff, but at least not nearly as poorly censored as the first two Sagas). Would be nice if the Season Sets could include the Ocean dub stuff too.

1. Ocean used Funi's script word for word. I remember hearing that Ocean cleaned up a lot of the slang and overall stupid dialogue that was written in but I''m not to sure on that. I don't know how they got permission to use Funi's script either but they say the same thing more or less.
2. The music is from Megaman. Don't know why they did that!
3. The later Ocean dub is edited for TV only. I don't know how extreme the editing was (it didn't seem like much) since it's less censored than the first two seasons, but the obvious things like, nudity, middle fingers, and intense blood sprays you can pretty much assume were taken out. Still not too sure though what was edited specifically though.
In a way, I don't know why Ocean went through all of the trouble to do another DBZ English dub when basically Funi's dub could have been used since the later Ocean episodes just seem like slightly more edited Funi episodes with different voices and music.
