Anime Boston's Funimation Panel

They touted the proper translation that One Piece was getting at this panel. The rep openly bashed the 4Kids dub and the crowd cheered that they were finally getting their show the right way. DBZ is the ONLY show they do this to. It is, without a doubt, the single most bizarre thing ever done to an anime, I think. We can put the dub aside here, that has nothing to do with this. Other than some Disney movies(I believe the new edition of Robin Hood is one), I cannot think of any other show or movie or whatever that a company has done this with. I guarantee that if they had made Ultimate Uncut box sets those would have sold just as well, if not better, than the current orange sets, no one is buying the show because it is widescreen, but there are people who are not buying these sets for this very reason. The 9 year olds Funimation is so in love with selling to do not care one bit about aspect ratio. I work in a Best Buy. The general public, full grown men and women, still don't understand why you should buy a movie widescreen, let alone a little kid.
My conclusion: Humanity is doomed.
My Sollution: Flee from reality by constructing an awesome fantasy world, then tracking down some mad scientist to make it as real as possible, and fleeing there with no intentions of bringing in the masses.
And I will call this world 'Dragon World', because it will have a magical wish-granting dragon in it, and... umm... I think there's a manga about it somewhere.
... Or maybe something else is better...

Wow! Funi still boggles my mind if this is true. The fact that they continue to treat the one product that made them the company that they are today like absolute shit and the combination of how it has been shown and proven that they can be a competent anime company with their other products and anime gives me another reason to never buy Funi's DB products ever again.
The fact that they can play so many people like retarded lab rats and how people still always listen and take their bullshit about DB in the ass and how whenever somebody points out the obvious like, they're fucking up DBZ and ignoring it, yet people think you're bitching and complaining too much is frightening. I know I'm not being played for a fool.
I'm pretty sure they'll release DBZ again on DVD too to be honest. There are people that like the season sets that have problems with them *cough* Season 3 & 4 dub *cough* Other than that, I know I'm not supporting the type of shit Funi's pulling. I mean think about it. If they make another dub with more redubs rather than just a few then they can have a dub somewhat near what should've been made in the first place. By that time though, people should seriously get tired of their "DBZ fans have peanut sized brains" shit but seeing how the fandom is, Funi can do whatever they want and people will support it. Hell they could put out a black and white set and people will say, "Oh it's just like the manga!!1!!!12!#!@"

Be grateful the filler in Dragon Ball doesn't suck like the 3rd arc of Rurouni Kenshin.

Not me. Then again, when I was 5, most anime on US tv was on Nick Jr. And when I was in 8th grade, saw girls from my class on camping trip singing the Jump in, Jump out song from Gullah Gullah Island.bkev wrote:Wow, things have changed; I was done with all the kiddy shows on Nick Jr. by 5. Also, why did Anime Boston happen so early? Usually it doens't occur until May?
As for DBZ, I think it's a matter of what worked so far will continue to work. Remember, no matter what many anime fans say, money matters.
^True money matters but wouldn't it, I don't know, make more sense to give something that'll make everybody happy regardless of what version of this they watch. I mean Funi could have twice to three times as much money as they have now if they continued their redub and didn't widescreen their video. I know those are the two main reasons why people aren't buying the season sets, and it's not a few people either, it's a pretty decent sized chuck of lost sales that could have been had.

But it was actually made for nine year olds. My four year old nephew loves DBZ. After watching it he goes around pretending to shoot Kamehamehas (which he mispromounces like Goten.) and charge the genki dama.shenron002 wrote:This Contradicts this:He said he didn't know what ratio One Piece the TV show would be in, but that all shows Funimation released would be in their original aspect ratio.

Yeah DB is for kids but I still wouldn't show my children (if or whenever I have them) early parts in DB with Goku's and Roshi's antics until they're at least in 7th or 8th grade rather than 3rd or 4th grade. I know there are parts in the original DB that make most people that aren't children get nervous. I will admit though I have more problems showing sexual type things to children than violence, even though that's a whole nother issue, so I'd willingly show them Z and GT uncut when they're young but DB would have to wait.Victator Supreme wrote:But it was actually made for nine year olds. But it's like this, I'm 19 and I was watching the 21st Budokai a few months ago when Lanfan took off her clothes to fight Namu and my mom thought I was watching animated porn and when I told her it was Dragonball, she didn't believe me and hassled me to hell. So if I had problems I think kids'll have worse problems.

Okay, my bad as an uncle their not into those shows anymore. After seeing them at easter, I found out they're into Sonic-X now and they play lots of Wii!To be Honest I have 2 nephews, one who is 9 and one who is 7! Anime, on Nick Jr.? Seriously? Maybe Nick itself, but never Nick Jr... right?Super Sonic wrote: Not me. Then again, when I was 5, most anime on US tv was on Nick Jr. And when I was in 8th grade, saw girls from my class on camping trip singing the Jump in, Jump out song from Gullah Gullah Island.
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
Wow, well it wasn't like that 8 years ago, sheesh. It was nearly impossible to find anyone saying anything nice at all about the American dubs on the web.MajinVejitaXV wrote:I agree completely. I've been around the DragonBall community for about 10 years now, and it seems like anytime someone voices concern about any negative aspect of the series they're "whining" and should just shut up and enjoy the show however they can get it.VegettoEX wrote:It's just so difficult to do ANY type of project or presentation that ISN'T nonsensical fanboy-gushing, because people immediately think you're being negative and inflammatory.
Perhaps that viewpoint is just a frustrated sigh of disappointment and ineptitude from me, but I see it as the (sad) truth.
As a result, my activity in the community waxes and wanes. Hell, if you're posting anything negative about the English version in general it's almost as though you're wiping your ass with the American flag to some people, which gets really old really quick

That explains the witch complaining about spirits being angry and turning rainbows orange, and how Maya and her brother got eaten by a frog, and *Dies* :shock

... like, none of my 'and's had 'n's in them...
Umm... yes...
*still wants to see someone attempt to release a "proper" English dub of DB/Z/GT, although it's probably not happening*

Wait, so because your mom is prudish, you'd refuse to let your children watch an entirely innocent children's cartoon. You didn't seem to agree with your mother's stance on the subject, yet you're still going to adopt it when it comes you your own children? How about, you know, NOT pretending nudity is such an extreme taboo?Vekurotto wrote:Yeah DB is for kids but I still wouldn't show my children (if or whenever I have them) early parts in DB with Goku's and Roshi's antics until they're at least in 7th or 8th grade rather than 3rd or 4th grade. Um no. There are laws/culture mores attached to nudity and children that protect them from public, private, and internet nudity so why would I ignore those and say that watching DB is an exception even though it falls into those subjects that most people want their kids to be older to find out about? If things were ideal and go the way I want them to go I'd make sure they don't watch DB and maybe even Z until they're at least at an age when I feel comfortable showing it to them. I mean if real life nudity is prohibited in most non-children's programming then I don't see me making an exception to DB even if it was meant for 8-12 year olds in Japan.Adamant wrote:Wait, so because your mom is prudish, you'd refuse to let your children watch an entirely innocent children's cartoon. But I don't plan on being a father for another 10-15 years lol but whenever I am, I really wouldn't be comfortable showing them this uncut and in Japanese until they at least reach 12-14.

Because it falls outside those laws anyway, and the US' cultural mores regarding anything nudity-related are ridiculously idiotic.
Vekurotto wrote:I mean if real life nudity is prohibited in most non-children's programming then I don't see me making an exception to DB even if it was meant for 8-12 year olds in Japan.
But it's not. Just because some stupid American censors make stupid recommandations as to what is suitable for whom does not mean you have to pay any attention to them.
And that, as I said, is just carrying on your mother's prudish attitude. Dragonball is a children's cartoon, there's absolutely nothing in it that's not suitable for a 9-year-old, and claiming there is is exactly what leads to ridiculous censorship of innocent material.Vekurotto wrote:I really wouldn't be comfortable showing them this uncut and in Japanese until they at least reach 12-14.
