Is admitting to have watched and liked Super like admitting to have done something 'naughty'?

Post by Mister_Popo » Mon Nov 18, 2019 4:50 pm

If the question is posed at high school, for the ones who actually have visited adult sites to put their hand up ... Most of the times nobody or only a few put their hands up, right?

Supers success is unmistakably huge if you look at the raw numbers, with massive sales rates. Streaming services crashed numerous times when Super was airing. The Blu-rays sold very well. Broly was a huge box office hit too. On https://myanimelist.net/anime/30694/Dragon_Ball_Super not less than 170 000 + people gave it an average score of 7,6 / 10, which is obviously very good. At the same time a lot of people seem to know a suspicious lot about it, even to the extend i suspect folks have been re-watching its more popular episodes multiple times.

Now when you ask the same question amongst fans, there seem to be a lot that deny to have watched everything or even to have enjoyed it in the first place. (It's everyones right to do so, let me be clear, i don't want to dispute that with this topic. Or attack fans that actually don't like it.)

There seems to be a controversy here between deeds and concessions. Is it shame? For what? How can this be explained?
Is this the same underlying psychological phenomenon as why people deny they have actually have been watching adult content?

This is not meant as a joke btw, this is a serious question.

Pretty sure it isn't and those that say it is should be ignored.

Wait what?

So your question is that does admitting to watching Dragon Ball Super have the same social stigma as admitting to watching pornography as a minor?

I'd like to congratulate you on your novel premise, it's a new one for sure.

Everyone have different taste, i like Bio Broly, and i think Lum from Urusei Yatsura is one of most annoying characters in anime history. I used to be ashamed of such things, i was thinking maybe something is wrong with me, i mean, how can i not like Lum, or game Last of Us? But i realised few years ago, it is my own taste, and i shouldnt force myself to enjoy what i learly dont, or ate something because everyone hates it :)

Assuming we're not talking about something immoral/illegal, it's never wrong to like something, and anyone who tries to yuck your yum is a dickhead.

So, no. Liking Super is not naughty. Enjoy what you enjoy. :)

For all clearance, i feel by no means attacked by anyone personally or annoyed by others who deeply dislike Super.
I didn't like everything about Super either. That's not where this is about. I think we had plenty of other topics discussing that already.

It's rather something i seem to notice. The tendancy towards Super if you read reviews or even talk to people, is rather extremely critical. People almost don't seem to enjoy it or find it entertaining. At least not generally. But why doesn't this opinion translate into the numbers? Or the other way around, why don't the success numbers seem to translate into the opinions?

Could it have to do something with DBZ being more 'manly' than DBS? If you confirm watching and liking Super, which is somehow more lighthearted and childlike than DBZ, could it be like admitting you are watching something "you are not supposed to be watching for a person that has reached maturity", could it be something 'image' related? I know this does not make sense for everyone. Some people may not care about image, but a lot of others certainly do, in reality but even on the internet.

It's my impression, that is of course subjective: could be right, could be false. Just wanted to collect some thoughts about this seeming controversy i seem to notice.

It seems like it says more about those who are critical of those who like Super.

I find that people generally enjoy Super. They’re stoked that DBZ is back and they’re glad to be able to watch new episodes of a childhood favorite. Tons of people who don’t even watch anime watch subbed episodes of Dragon Ball Super and talk excitedly about new episodes and movies when they come out. I only see harsh criticism of Super on the Internet, and in echo chambers like Kanzenshuu which has attracted a certain type of fan. I’ve never run into any sort of “stigma” involving Super in real life.

Now, I did run into real life criticism of Kai. A lot of “um I’ve already seen this. And why are the voices different?”—kind of stuff. I enjoy both Kai and Super and think they are great companions to each other, especially if you’re watching the dub.

If DBZ is seen as more manly then it's from those insecure fans who confuse "dark and gritty" with "mature and sophisticated". The irony being that DBZ isn't dark and gritty. It's aimed at kids.

The show kind of sucks, and the ratings reflect that. But at the end of the day, its still Dragonball..

19 years ago I was rushing home from school to watch DBZ on Cartoon Network, and today I've rushed home from work to watch DBS on Pop. I guess it's true the more things change the more they stay the same.

I did find this attitude of just trying to shit on Super for the smallest of reasons, yeah. Mostly without even giving any reasons for it. Just "Super bad, Z good, because shit. Upvote me now". But I don't mind that, I actually laugh at just how salty people must be for acting like that.

For example, the other day I was watching a clip from the Buu saga about Buu killing all humans and half the comments are literally just shitting on Zamasu by people who most likely only watched his arc two years ago without paying any attention. I don't know, this childish behaviour is honestly fine, I don't mind that. I'm a proud "Supertard" right here.

Other than the first two arcs (which did have some interesting additional content) Super was overall a fun watch and introduced a lot of things I enjoyed. There is nothing to be ashamed about.
