How? Anyone at/below Super Saiyan 3 is useless here (probably even Super Saiyan 4. Not counting fusions). If anything, it's Super Saiyan God what allows Trunks to be here otherwise he'd be the first to be defeated (along with Pan, poor girl...).
Because plot armor is a thing? These characters may be defeated quickly but they still take away focus, as minimal as it is, from the villains. Also, my point about Trunks is that he was hyped too much yet didn't really amount to anything. He just faced Ultimate Fin, then Mechikaboola but didn't defeat him because he got a new shiny form, which in turn now makes Trunks need yet another shiny power up just a single mission after archieving God, undermining the form itself because he needs to use this new key thing. It isn't any different from the Buu saga and their "now this new thing is the best thing ever! Oh nevermind it failed, but now we got THIS other newer thing!" mindset. It makes the impact of a transformation/power up less important. It isn't just Vegetto and Trunks versus the three big bads, it's a damn lot of characters with different abilities that together may be able to help them one way or another (not to mention we don't really know how powerful the new forms of Salsa/Shroom are, or neither do we know how most of the other Demon Gods are beyond being below SS4). Overall it seems like we are just getting many plot points too quickly (which again is not that bad, it's typical modern DB and is epic, but still.)
Also, the demons betraying Mechikaboola will probably have an impact on the story, what would be the point if bringing them bacj from the black hole otherwise? And weak character are not automaticaly useless if you are creative enough, there are plenty of examples on the original manga, Super, the Heroes manga... Until proven otherwise, I see no reason to believe all these characters joining forces will bebe useless. Not only would it be bad story-wise, it would also be really uncreative and rather useless overall imho.
