While I do have nostalgic feelings for the initial seasons of the Ocean dub, after having become an unwavering fan of the Japanese version, looking back at the Ocean dub just seems as though they didn't know what they were doing half the time, and the other half they were trying to turn DBZ into a bright, cheery, Saturday morning kid's show.

I mean, Piccolo spouting Biblical references? Vegeta telling Goku his father was a scientist? Tien and his AWFUL 'three-eyed cowboy' reference? The way they just KILLED the Tien-Chaozu death scene was unforgivable.

When they switched over to Funi during the Freeza saga, the new actors were quite green and things got a lot worse, and only gradually improved in the Cell saga with the surprisingly good Faulconer music. (Cell's theme anyone?)

However, the little I have seen of the later Ocean dub makes me shudder, as flawed as the Funi soundtrack can be, Ocean does it much, much worse. They seem to be missing the point half the time with the fight scenes and the cheesy TOTALLY OUT OF PLACE 'Mega Man' sound effects.

In short: Ocean sucks, Funi's a bit better, but no dub can compare with the original.

Asking Nappa if he knows the story of David and Goliath. It's around the point that Piccolo/Kuririn/Gohan take over the fight with Nappa on their own together.

Thanks for pointing that out. I seem to have forgotten everything about the Funi sponsored Ocean dub after watching the Original Japanese.
The series doesn't start with the arrival of Raditz. Stop being lazy and watch Dragonball.

Haha I remember that. I was like what the fuck? The japanese version never does examples of like anything, it's just focused in it's own story.

Goku referenced that myth or something with the rabbits on the Moon back in Dragonball.

If you look real carefully up at the moon you can see a picture of a bunny.
That's as far as I know of the legend.

Edit: Sorry I thought you meant the legend, it was in the fight with boss Rabbit, he beats him and his soilders up and takes them on the moon to make treats for boys and girls.

Probably. I know it's in the manga, after he takes the Rabbit gang to the Moon on the Niyobo (sp?).

If it's in the manga then I don't know, because I haven't read them in a long while since I don't own them.

It's in the anime too. But as to the note about the series not refrencing legends? It's based on one > >

I'll agree that a deamon talking about a judeo-christian story when what he really said was "The earth doesn't go down so easily" is idiotic. Especially when Nappa isn't really taller than Pic, by much if at all.

When I think of the Ocean dub, I think of the job the VAs did with the material FUNi gave them, and that's why I like them. Particurally Scott, Brian and Ian. It's them and their preformances I have affection for, not the script or the editing.

As bad as the initial Ocean dubbed episodes scripts were, they were still better and less painful to listen to than Funi's DBZ Season 3-5's and DBZ Movie 4 and 7 scripts.
Be grateful the filler in Dragon Ball doesn't suck like the 3rd arc of Rurouni Kenshin.

As Velasa said, it was in the anime, but the Ocean dub said something about them making Easter treats. Didn't watch the Funi-redubbed ep, but the change was most likely due to the Rabbit in the Moon story not being as known here. Kinda like how Sailor Moon's name was changed to a Western mythological source.

Someone asked me this once and I really can't remember. Did someone make a reference in the Saban days to dinosaurs and extinction as a way of saying how screwed they were? Cuz if so, that's pretty damn silly.
To show my appreciation, I'll only beat them half to death.

Yes they did, I can't remember what they said exactly but I can confirm there was a line like this.

Yeah that's another thing the Ocean dub was really good at: making really lame references to death without actually saying it, anyone remember that 'next dimension' crap?

I believe Kuririn says something about 'going the way of the dinosaurs' sometime on Namek, which I found amazing considering THERE ARE DINOSAURS ON BOTH EARTH AND NAMEK.

Meh, lazy scriptwriters.

Yeah, that's why I think it would be silly. But didn't Kuririn have a line somewhere about going the way of the dodo bird? Did he have two lines like this (I do recall him being especially whiny back then).

Scott McNeil is also a better Piccolo than Sabat too. Piccolo is more then just a tall green guy like Sabat makes him out to be, Piccolo is a reincarnated demon king, his voice needs to be manacing.
could not agree more,I love the ocean dub voices

I believe it was Frieza that said "Going the way of the dodo bird." Which makes it even worse seeing as how he's an alien.

Some notable classics from the Saban days include Nappa going on about things like baseball, how great a chef he is, and how much he hates watching the news, even though he likely wouldn't know what the hell baseball and the news are.

Vegeta's line about making some of his "special sauce" is just golden.
