Have You Guys Heard the Myth of Yamcha's Name Being Based on Yam?

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

Have You Guys Heard the Myth of Yamcha's Name Being Based on Yam?

When I first got into Dragonball, I heard this myth several times. It wasn't until years later that I learned how false this was. Have any of you heard this myth before?

I've never heard of the rumor, but honestly, I'm not that surprised. With so many other characters having names readily associated with English names for food, objects, etc, fans may have just made that assumption. It's similar to how fans believe (even to this day) that Nappa's name comes from Napa cabbage, when in truth it's from the dialect that individuals in the region Toriyama grew up in use to describe green, leafy vegetables.

I've never heard that myth, but I've definitely heard many— especially back in the Angelfire & Geocities days. So much bullshit passed off as fact, and then repeated by others for years!
