Which voice actors would you prefer

Post by Anonymous Friend » Mon Apr 14, 2008 11:59 am

In a lot of the other topics that come up on this frums we have people who criticize the voice actors that FUNi has used for their dub of the Dragonball series. Other have mentioned voice actors from other whose talents are leagues better than the FUNi actors, such as Billy West, John DiMaggio, Phil LaMarr, Maurice LaMarche, Tress MacNeille, Frank Welker, and so on.

If you were to chose a experienced and distinguished VA to voice the characters, who would you use and which voice of their's would you want?

I don't find the issue to be the VA's as much as the voices they chose and are now stuck with forever. For example I know Sabat can at least crank out some really good voices after watching the dub of F.M.A but he's stuck using his bad impression of the season 2 voice actors because Funi is too afraid to change the voices and alienate some of the viewers.

Sabat really improved after DBZ IMHO.

I could see John Dimaggio as Piccolo. The dude has incredible range

Let's be extremely careful with this thread. If I see even so much as a smidge of generic FUNimation vs Ocean vs Japanese bashing, it's just going to be locked.

Try and put a spin on it, back up your thoughts, and bring something new to the table.

Yes, no bashing of what already is. We have more than enough of that. We should think of this as a "I really like this voice actor from this series and I think that the voice he uses for this character would also go very well with this character from the Dragonball series" type of discussion. We don't even have to mention who has been used previous to record for that character.

I can say I could picture Tim Curry as Frieza. Just think he would sound great with an evil British accent. Also, Tim Curry's evil laughter would work well for Frieza I think.

Ron Perlman as Freeza. And whoever voiced Recoome in the Ocean dub should've been kept.

I also could buy Billy West's Philip J. Fry voice as Goku's, but I wouldn't want to lose Schemmel's awesome screams.

I dunno, I've heard some pretty good screams outta Billy West, too, but I agree, nobody can "dbz-scream" (in English :P) quite like Mr. Schemmel.

Somebody oughta make a video.

This is really funny, I started a thread similar to this a few days ago at MFG.

I don't know why, but I can definitely see Johnny Depp as Vegeta. It would give Vegeta a more organic voice than the "evil" depiction that the VAs do in the English Dubs, even though I've always been a fan of Drummond. The way Depp says words and flexes his voice is definitely something that I see with a Vegeta VA.

Edward Norton as Goku would be a pretty cool combo.

Perfect combo would be Alan Rickman and Dabra though

Actually, I think Steve Blum would make an interesting Freeza. He already does a good Orochimaru, who's japanese equivolent had a similar manner of speech (and level of menace). That sickeningly polite while tearing your throat out kind of quality.

He also may have made a good Piccolo. Then again, my top pick for Piccolo would still be Scott McNeil. He really sold the role for me, even when the script couldn't. Then again, for a bit of a different interpretation, I think Brian Drummond would make an interesting Piccolo too.

Just along those lines, I think Ted Cole was awesome as Yamucha. I think Johnny Yong Bosch would make an interesting choice there too.

Crispin Freeman would make a kickass Cell, or Coola even.

Brad Swaile would be a cool Gohan (Buu Saga, obviously).

Michael Donovan for Tenshinhan

John Burgmeier for East Kaioshin

And this may sound weird, but I think Tony Oliver would make a good Goku.

And I think Ryan Alosio or Skip Stellrecht would make interesting takes on Vegeta.

EDIT: Oh... apparently Brad Swaile is the international english Gohan. I should go find a clip...
To show my appreciation, I'll only beat them half to death.

I've PICTURED what the show would be like if it were done by another studio outside of either FUNimation or Ocean. The closest thing to that I could really see working were anything done in LA, and Harmony Gold gave me the largest taste of that I'd ever want. It'd be interesting, yeah, but honestly I'd stick with what we've got.

*looks at everyone's posts*

Some of these people I recognize and some I don't. If you can, list what voice you want them to be using as a reference so that people can picture it in their mind.

I want Christopher Lee as Kami/Piccolo Daimao. Apart from original seiyuu, that's the only voice I can think of whenever I read the manga and they both talk.
Be grateful the filler in Dragon Ball doesn't suck like the 3rd arc of Rurouni Kenshin.

Dude, Frank Welker as Vegeta ^^ That would be cool.

Welker played most of the Decepticons in the original Transformers cartoon....

He also plays ALL cartoon monkeys ^^ IE Abu, Curious George, and Nibbler

Oh yeah and he's Fred from Scooby Dooby Doo....(my least favorite role)

Peter Cullen as Guru haha. (80s Optimus prime, 2000 CN announcer)

I would suggest someone else for Goku, but as Rocketman mentioned, Sean Schemmel's screams are just too awesome.
Yamcha: Do you remember the spell to release him - do you know all the words?
Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!

I'll agree with this... again. There's really nothing wrong with Schemmel's voice for Goku; it's very fitting. His acting could be a little better, but if the dub's voice direction and script weren't usually so outright shitty, I'm sure nobody would have any problems with him.
