Do you want to see Goku-lite/Vegeta-lite sagas in the future?
I loved the Great Saiyaman saga so much. All the stuff Gohan, Goten, Videl. When Goku eventually did come back, he felt like a distant friend from long ago back for a quick visit. I miss that feeling.
This series has such a fun cast of characters, it makes me sad they don't do more with them. I don't want Dragon Ball to be the Goku and Vegeta show.
Goku and Vegeta are pretty much equals to the Destroyers in the multiverse at this point. And they can teleport anywhere. There's only so much you can do with them so strong and able to go anywhere in the blink of an eye. Wouldn't it make more sense to make villains for all the other characters? Or give the other characters the keys to the car so there's some dramatic tension? Part of me just wishes we had a few sagas without Goku and Vegeta. Why not send Vegeta to Planet Sadala for a few years? or send Goku off with Uub & Whis somewhere?

Eeh, too little too late. They focus all this attention on Goku and Vegeta for 10 years since BoG, but suddenly they would switch scenes to Goten or Trunks and we'd be supposed to care? I can imagine how "forced" it would feel.
They should have equally shared screentime between them. Namek saga did it amazingly well, Gohan and Goku all had important moments while fighting Frieza and his henchmen for example. Overall Z was pretty good with it's side characters treatment.
The only way I can see it if they canonize Kuriza, so at least he'd make this feel somewhat different.

Big no unless the arc was kept short.
Goku is the lead. It's his story. At no point was DB ever an ensemble show in the truest sense. It has had periods where it's made better use of it's secondary character which I'm fine with but Goku is the lead in the same way Sam Malone is the lead of Cheers or Jack Bauer is the lead of 24.
A story with a prolonged period without its lead sounds so incredibly boring.
People keep pointing to the Freeza arc and while that's certainly a good example, it's also a quest not dependent on physical strength

To be honest, I kind of agree.ABED wrote: Mon May 25, 2020 4:10 pm Big no unless the arc was kept short.

I will say, I do think a Vegeta-lite storyline would make sense, or a storyline where Goku takes a backseat for a portion of it would too (you mention Namek; another storyline that similarly doesn't depend on strength could happen), but really, the problem with Goku and Vegeta in Dragon Ball was never that too many stories feature them, it's always been that no one else is allowed to take a win, and as time's gone on, their power has been raised so high, no one else can factor into any fights, and particularly with Super, where things that aren't fights are being paid less and less attention to, the other characters are just not being given anything to do...
A story that actually uses some of the ensemble properly -- think DBZ movie 13, except Goku doesn't ultimately defeat Hildegarn, or he does but can only do it because of some ritual performed by Tapion and Trunks -- would be the thing we need, I think. The Black arc kinda flirted wiht doing this, but Toei/Toriyama couldn't make their mind up between about six different endings, so Trunks's semi-victory was short-lived and totally hollow, and his arc leading up to that point was rather lacklustre.
The point of Dragon Ball is to enjoy it. Never lose sight of that.

Then still give them something important to do.Cure Dragon 255 wrote: Wed May 27, 2020 1:32 amWhat if there were more and I quote you here "More quests not dependant on strength"ABED wrote: Mon May 25, 2020 4:10 pm Big no unless the arc was kept short.

Main story? No. It could only work for a spin-off, such as remaking the Bardock special or a new Trunks special.
Re: Do you want to see Goku-lite/Vegeta-lite sagas in the future?
Ever since DBZ began stories were basically written with this philosophy:
“One, Goku needs to be louder, angrier, and have access to a time machine. Two, whenever Goku's not onscreen, all the other characters should be asking ‘Where’s Goku?'”
Regarding the first part, Trunks got the time machine. Regarding the second part, that is basically how a lot of the major fights without Goku felt.

Dragon Ball is about Goku. This is like complaining about characters wondering "Where's Superman" in a Superman story.Jord wrote: Fri May 29, 2020 11:33 am Ever since DBZ began stories were basically written with this philosophy:

Re: Do you want to see Goku-lite/Vegeta-lite sagas in the future?
Super did have that one filler story that involved Gohan and that Barry Khan guy. Besides that, much of the Future Trunks saga did revolve around, well, Future Trunks.
Re: Do you want to see Goku-lite/Vegeta-lite sagas in the future?
Stories that shine light on secondary characters I think is mandatory. DB is all about the relationships Goku has made and Super's whole theme is about trust and working together so the better question is why don't we see them(I know why but you get what I mean)
Re: Do you want to see Goku-lite/Vegeta-lite sagas in the future?
Don't get me wrong, it wasn't meant as a complaint. It's just how the formula works and clearly it's a successful formula. The comparison with Superman is indeed quite apt here. considering the roles the other character play.ABED wrote: Fri May 29, 2020 4:56 pmDragon Ball is about Goku.
