France will be the next country to get DB on Blu-Ray, although it's not going to be the same version as Select Vision's:

Omg. I have some hope in this seeing how awesome DB super from Ab is, and that they remastered moero top striker in HD properly.Matches Malone wrote: Thu Jul 09, 2020 12:54 am France will be the next country to get DB on Blu-Ray, although it's not going to be the same version as Select Vision's:

Edit : article says they'll release it only when they'll be satisfied by the remaster and packaging.

France seems to actually have some standards.sangofe wrote: Thu Jul 09, 2020 3:36 am Omg. I have some hope in this seeing how awesome DB super from Ab is, and that they remastered moero top striker in HD properly.

Only dubs that matter are DB, Kai, & Super. Nothing else.

To be fair Funimation's satisfaction is when Dragon Ball looks like flash cartoon with GIS watercolour backgrounds, soooooo...

This should be its own thread.
That said, chances of this being a proper HD remaster are actually pretty okay. I wouldn't get my hopes up (not after Selecta Vision and Funi's 30th sets turned out so disappointing), but AB Groupe were given film prints of Dragon Ball and Z, when they were still airing in Japan. Likely AB Groupe still has their film masters, and we know for sure that they also have the original censored videotape masters that were scanned from these film prints when they were still pretty fresh.
So, in theory, AB Groupe has a solid film master to scan (Funimation created the well-liked Level masters from the same kind of sources), and a great colour reference, so they could put out a really nice HD master, and it sounds like they'd be starting with OG DB with it, too.
If this happens, then I hope MangaUK import it.
... But it's entirely possible this turns out as another upscale. It's hard to say. If it's another upscale, it may still be better than Selecta Vision's.

The point of Dragon Ball is to enjoy it. Never lose sight of that.

At this point, the bar is so low that I'll just be happy to get a clean-up of any excessive grain, some color-correction, & not a lot of detail lost.
Only dubs that matter are DB, Kai, & Super. Nothing else.

This could be so amazing. Imagining DB, but given the Level Set treatment. My mouth is watering over the prospect. This could be DB's first shot at a true HD release.sangofe wrote: Thu Jul 09, 2020 3:36 amOmg. I swear if this thing drops and it looks great, I will sell my kidney on the black market to get it in my hands.

Maybe we could ask a mod to change the thread title to "The Official Foreign OG-DB Blu-Ray Rumours Thread", haha.

At this point maybe we could get this thread, the 30th Anniversary Blu Ray thread, and merge them together into one "General DB Home Media Discussion" thread?

Merging threads is generally inadvisable considering that both can be updated at the same time and that can ruin the flow of conversation when people aren't quoting each other.ArmenianPepsi wrote: Thu Jul 09, 2020 3:41 pmAt this point maybe we could get this thread, the 30th Anniversary Blu Ray thread, and merge them together into one "General DB Home Media Discussion" thread?![]()
Maybe we could have a general "Dragon Ball Home Media" thread and have it be one of the Stickied threads?

As for the French HD release, I REALLY hope they use similar packaging to Selecta Vision's set because those are really good!

That's a pretty good idea there, but I wouldn't know where to start putting the idea to action, and I'm sure the admins wouldn't bother with some lowly scrub like me anyhowKBABZ wrote: Thu Jul 09, 2020 10:41 pmMerging threads is generally inadvisable considering that both can be updated at the same time and that can ruin the flow of conversation when people aren't quoting each other.ArmenianPepsi wrote: Thu Jul 09, 2020 3:41 pmAt this point maybe we could get this thread, the 30th Anniversary Blu Ray thread, and merge them together into one "General DB Home Media Discussion" thread?KBABZ wrote: Thu Jul 09, 2020 2:48 pm

How about "International Home Media" thread? Since we have so many ones for the US ones?

For me the main purpose of this thread is actually keeping track of HD releases of the original Dragon Ball, which is a pretty big deal!
Re: Possible details on Selecta Vision's Dragon Ball (1986-1989) bluray release
I'll make a new thread after I email AB vidéo.

Ditto, I have their banana bricks and they are fine for the most part but OG Dragon Ball is definitely a series that needs an upgrade, I'd also love to support this show again in the UK because it gets so little love compared to Z. And actually having the Japanese version of Episode 83 would also be a plus.
Do you have any info about international non-English broadcasts about the Dragon Ball anime or manga translations/editions? Please message me. Researching for a future book with Dragon Ball scholar Derek Padula

I've emailed the guy that got interviewed (hope I found the right email address) asking if it's from film and if they'd be interested in the original broadcast audio.

If they turn out to be interested in broadcast audio won't they have to jump through extra hoops with Toei with the permissions and whatnot to use it?sangofe wrote: Fri Jul 10, 2020 2:11 pm I've emailed the guy that got interviewed (hope I found the right email address) asking if it's from film and if they'd be interested in the original broadcast audio.

They would have to ask for approval, and Toei would either say yes or no.ArmenianPepsi wrote: Fri Jul 10, 2020 4:45 pmIf they turn out to be interested in broadcast audio won't they have to jump through extra hoops with Toei with the permissions and whatnot to use it?sangofe wrote: Fri Jul 10, 2020 2:11 pm I've emailed the guy that got interviewed (hope I found the right email address) asking if it's from film and if they'd be interested in the original broadcast audio.
Wouldn't be hard, but Toei may very well say no. It's hard to say; they're awkward and inconsistent about this stuff... There's no real logic at work.
It's well worth trying, is what I'd say.

Yeah it's always worth a shot. The worst they can say is say no, and if they do say no, the community would probably just take the mantle and sync the audio themselves. Not too much to loseRobo4900 wrote: Fri Jul 10, 2020 7:41 pmThey would have to ask for approval, and Toei would either say yes or no.ArmenianPepsi wrote: Fri Jul 10, 2020 4:45 pmIf they turn out to be interested in broadcast audio won't they have to jump through extra hoops with Toei with the permissions and whatnot to use it?sangofe wrote: Fri Jul 10, 2020 2:11 pm I've emailed the guy that got interviewed (hope I found the right email address) asking if it's from film and if they'd be interested in the original broadcast audio.
