Dr Slump and original Dragon Ball in top 10 list for most wanted reboot shows
https://www.crunchyroll.com/anime-news/ ... anime-form
Japanese survey site Voice Note, in conjunction with FutabaNet asked 200 male/ female Japanese Jump fans aged 30-50 “what series you’d like to see animated again from 1980s shonen” and this is their Top 10:
10 - Tsuide ni Tonchinkan
9 - Kimagure Orange Road
8 - High School Kimengumi
7 - St Seiya
6 - Cats Eye
5 - Kinikuman
4 - Dragon Ball
3 - City Hunter
2 - Fist of the Northern Star
1 - Dr Slump
I'm sure Dragon Ball would be welcome. Not so sure about Dr Slump, but if Mr Osomatsu can score in the 1980s and 2020s then maybe it has a chance too.

Re: Dr Slump and original Dragon Ball in top 10 list for most wanted reboot shows
I think it would be great if Dragon Ball had a remake in the form of a series of OVAs once enough of the original Japanese cast has died off (which, hopefully, won't be for another decade or two at least). Follow the manga more faithfully, have movie-quality animation, use new actors with no obligation to sound like their predecessors, take a mulligan on the designs of Mr Popo and Staff Officer Black, and rework Roshi a bit.
... But realistically, Kai is already exactly what Toei would always have done as far as a Dragon Ball reboot/remake; skip to Raditz, keep all the problematic elements, reuse the old animation, do the whole thing as cheaply as possible in general, and have it kinda fall apart in the end. The only further step I could see them taking from Kai is doing new animation in the style of Super (that is, cheap, rushed, and super inconsistent from episode to episode), and using new castings who generally sound a lot like the original castings.

The point of Dragon Ball is to enjoy it. Never lose sight of that.

I find it very ironic that Dr. Slump topped the list when it ALREADY GOT a remake anime! Kinda exposes the problem with remakes in general, after 10 years people say "Do it again!".

I'd love a seasonal remake with high production value. It'd be great to see the entire manga reanimated using one art style from start to finish, such as Shintani's. With that said, I think DB's future in animation will be limited to completely new material.

The entire show would be amazing, just imagine DB with AOT or MHA's production value.KBABZ wrote: Tue Jul 21, 2020 6:49 pmShintani Kid Goku adventures would be amazing.Matches Malone wrote: Tue Jul 21, 2020 5:03 pm I'd love a seasonal remake with high production value. Re: Dr Slump and original Dragon Ball in top 10 list for most wanted reboot shows
It really surprised me to see that Dr. Slump was on the top, especially considering as KBABZ mentioned above that there already was a revived anime series with updated/retooled character designs back in 1997 after GT had ended and apparently the show didn't really do that well ratings wise. Although an interesting thing was how full circle it was, as the original Dr. Slump anime had aired on that Wednesday evening time slot which Dragon Ball then took over in 1986 after the latter's conclusion that carried through Z and GT over the course of the series' just over decade run.
DB collection related goals as of now:
1.) Find decent priced copy of Dragon Box Z Vol. 4 (Done)
2.) Collect rest of manga
3.) Get rest of Daizenshuu (2-7)

The most recent one was in 1997, so to be fair being over 20 years ago the current target elementary school audience wouldn’t even have been alive.KBABZ wrote: Tue Jul 21, 2020 4:59 pm I find it very ironic that Dr. Slump topped the list when it ALREADY GOT a remake anime! Yes, and not to mention the '97 Slump remake series is lesser known when compared the original '81-'86 anime. I've heard it didn't do that well in ratings.MasenkoHA wrote: Wed Jul 22, 2020 9:26 amThe most recent one was in 1997, so to be fair being over 20 years ago the current target elementary school audience wouldn’t even have been alive.KBABZ wrote: Tue Jul 21, 2020 4:59 pm I find it very ironic that Dr. Slump topped the list when it ALREADY GOT a remake anime! Re: Dr Slump and original Dragon Ball in top 10 list for most wanted reboot shows
I guess my point is that remakes (and remasters if we're talking video games) can have a cyclical nature to them if "it's not widescreen or HD" is used as the reason why the same stories should be done again. If you ignore that, both the original Dr. Slump and the 97 remake series would be perfectly serviceable. In 20 years people will probably say "They should remake Super because it's not in 16K". Where does that line of thinking end???MasenkoHA wrote: Wed Jul 22, 2020 9:26 amThe most recent one was in 1997, so to be fair being over 20 years ago the current target elementary school audience wouldn’t even have been alive.KBABZ wrote: Tue Jul 21, 2020 4:59 pm I find it very ironic that Dr. Slump topped the list when it ALREADY GOT a remake anime! Ah yes, one more reason/excuse for toei to never do a proper HD remaster of the old DB

I enjoy tinkering with video and audio.
Re: Dr Slump and original Dragon Ball in top 10 list for most wanted reboot shows
And to be even more fair, that remake was pretty bad. There's a reason all modern Dr. Slump stuff references the original anime and not the remake.MasenkoHA wrote: Wed Jul 22, 2020 9:26 amThe most recent one was in 1997, so to be fair being over 20 years ago the current target elementary school audience wouldn’t even have been alive.KBABZ wrote: Tue Jul 21, 2020 4:59 pm I find it very ironic that Dr. Slump topped the list when it ALREADY GOT a remake anime! Dragon Ball definitely deserves a proper reboot one day.
A world without Dragon Ball is just boring.

I'm not too opposed to another reboot of Dr Slump. If Dragon Ball Super can come and create a whole new generation of fans, maybe Dr Slump can also find a new appreciative audience, especially in the west, where it's been relegated to the status of "That other series Toriyama worked on before Dragon Ball that sometimes makes cameo appearances" and to my info hasn't really be properly released. Atleast not the anime, correct me if I'm wrong though.SuperSaiyaManZ94 wrote: Tue Jul 21, 2020 11:47 pm It really surprised me to see that Dr. Slump was on the top, especially considering as KBABZ mentioned above that there already was a revived anime series with updated/retooled character designs back in 1997 after GT had ended and apparently the show didn't really do that well ratings wise. First time Dragon Ball fan as of March 2020. Still learning the ropes. Nothing much else to say,

Re: Dr Slump and original Dragon Ball in top 10 list for most wanted reboot shows
I think the 1997 version of Dr. Slump is more or less accurate to the manga, but it hasn't gotten a wide international release, at least not in the US. When it comes to DB, I would've taken a properly done reboot over what we got with Super any day.ArmenianPepsi wrote: Thu Jul 23, 2020 3:55 pmI'm not too opposed to another reboot of Dr Slump. I don't know if I'd want a rebooted DB. I like that show's focus on martial arts, and a "new" show would more than likely carry over influences from DBZ.
That and I think the raucous humor of DB would be heavily sanitized.
