Yeah, i can definitely see it from that aspect why some would not be impressed with the scene.KBABZ wrote: Wed Sep 02, 2020 11:08 pmIt's less about it being a big-lipped alligator moment and more about it making comedy of getting a kid drunk/high/both.SuperSaiyaManZ94 wrote: Wed Sep 02, 2020 10:18 pm I don't think it's bad per se but by the same token not quite great either, and same as I Love Piccolo in World's Strongest plus Gohan's instrumental whistle song scene along with Hiya Dragon in Z movie 4 (though a lyrical version of Kuchibu no Kimochi with Nozawa singing does exist) but overall i'd say that it's one of those your mileage may vary sort of things. DB collection related goals as of now:
1.) Find decent priced copy of Dragon Box Z Vol. 4 (Done)
2.) Collect rest of manga
3.) Get rest of Daizenshuu (2-7)

Enjoyable film overall, though I can't say I like as much as some of the latter DB films. Saw the Funimation version and thought it was decent, been ages since i've seen the Pioneer version though, last time I saw it was when CN aired it(I remember those Don LaFontaine promos for it, ahh memories
) so i'm gonna have to rewatch that one again to compare it.

I unfortunately can't find a clip on YouTube, but I really love Garlic Junior's speech when he's granted immortality in the Pioneer version. Don Brown's performance there just sends chills down my spine, it's that good.
Do you have any info about international non-English broadcasts about the Dragon Ball anime or manga translations/editions? Please message me. Researching for a future book with Dragon Ball scholar Derek Padula

I"ve said this before on the forums, but what I love most about movie 1 (outside of the fantastic visuals) is that it really feels like an alternate version of Dragon Ball Z in which Goku is still just an (incredibly strong) earthling and retains more of the chinese mythology that Z pretty much discarded.
Re: Dragon Ball Rewatch, Week 36 - DBZ movie 1 (CURRENT WEEK)
I do feel like theoretically it takes place in AU where Raditz never came to earth. (It clearly happened after Goku and Gohan went to the reunion at Kame House and it appears they went home for dinner time instead of Raditz dropping in)kemuri07 wrote: Thu Sep 03, 2020 2:08 pm I"ve said this before on the forums, but what I love most about movie 1 (outside of the fantastic visuals) is that it really feels like an alternate version of Dragon Ball Z in which Goku is still just an (incredibly strong) earthling and retains more of the chinese mythology that Z pretty much discarded.
I wouldn’t say Z disregard anything considering the take on the otherworld happens in Z and Freeza is apparently based on a famous character in wuxia literature.

I'm doing a "Movieverse Timeline" project where, for fun, I figure out what all the between-movies events are in the movie timeline. In other words, what modifications do you have to make to the anime in order for it to work in the movies.MasenkoHA wrote: Thu Sep 03, 2020 2:11 pm I do feel like theoretically it takes place in AU where Raditz never came to earth. There are four main facets about Dead Zone that make it contradict with the manga/anime, and I have solutions on how to make it fit with a modified manga storyline:
- Krillin, Bulma and Roshi know Gohan's name and that he's Goku's son. This is something that's implied to happen off-screen when Goku visits Kame House, and is proven later when Krillin wonders where "Goku's son" is and when Goku says Gohan's name while Krillin is present. Thus, this "reveal" doesn't happen when Goku and Gohan visit Kame House before Raditz shows up in the "Movieverse".
- Garlic Jr. successfully wishes on the Dragon Balls. If Dead Zone were to literally replace the Raditz encounter, this would cause problems with the coming of Vegeta and Nappa because they arrive a month early, meaning Roshi and co. would be unable to wish Goku back to life and fight them because the Dragon Balls would still be stone. Roshi also says that they've had the Dragon Balls for quite some time before he's asked to use them, and the Dragon Radar can't track Dragon Balls if they're stone. It would also ruin the reason the Saiyans visit Earth in the first place, which is due to Raditz's broadcast. The easier solution here is to put Dead Zone a year before Raditz arrives; this gives enough time for Goku to find his three Dragon Balls again.
- Gohan reveals his hidden strength in front of Piccolo. This slightly re-contextualizes Piccolo taking him for this reason after Raditz since he already knows about it, although the fact that he does so because the coming Saiyans have put him in a corner remains.
- Goku has Nyoi-bo, which should be connecting Korin's Tower and the Lookout. In the manga storylines, Goku never uses the Nyoi-bo as an adult after he first visits the Lookout, so in the Movieverse Goku presumably picked it up after leaving the 23rd TB (particularly if you consider the Wedding Dress arc as something that happened in the Movieverse) and then returned it after the events of Dead Zone (which is weird because he specifically picks it up at the end).
Re: Dragon Ball Rewatch, Week 36 - DBZ movie 1 (CURRENT WEEK)
Ehh Z starts with Chi Chi calling Gohan for lunch. Dead Zone starts with Chi Chi calling Gohan for dinner. Bulma and Roshi are wearing their outfits from the start of Z at the reunion. I just interpreted as Goku took Gohan to Kame House for the reunion, but with no Raditz arriving they just hung out for a couple hours and then went home before dinner.KBABZ wrote: Thu Sep 03, 2020 3:06 pm

Also in both timelines Gyumao came to visit for dinner with presents for Gohan but in the tv series he brought toys in this movie he brought books.
Alternatively in this timeline no Raditz no dead Goku no Saiyans no Namek. The Artificial Humans kill everyone in this timeline[*]Garlic Jr. successfully wishes on the Dragon Balls. I just dismissed it as nobody at Toei could be bothered to remember Goku shouldn’t be able to use the Nyoi bo anymore.[*]Goku has Nyoi-bo, which should be connecting Korin's Tower and the Lookout. Re: Dragon Ball Rewatch, Week 36 - DBZ movie 1 (CURRENT WEEK)
I'm fairly sure this was Toei's intention. Everyone knows who Gohan is, but nobody knows about his hidden strength and everything else related to the status quo is basically at the point it was right before Radits dropped in. The 7 first Z movies basically operate on "and then everything magically resolved itself after whatever the last episode you watched was" logic, but this first one is kind of unique in that it's set at a point in time when the Radits fight clearly did not take place at all and nobody had seen Gohan display any kind of hidden power.MasenkoHA wrote: Thu Sep 03, 2020 2:11 pm I do feel like theoretically it takes place in AU where Raditz never came to earth. Neither the show or movie has Chichi mention which meal it is, just that it's "meal time". The Japanese dialogue is the same in both ("Gohan-chan! ...gohan yo"). It's presumably lunchtime, but that's just the translator's own interpretation for the subs. That said, with Gyuumao in the picture your version of events would make sense also.MasenkoHA wrote: Thu Sep 03, 2020 3:27 pm Ehh Z starts with Chi Chi calling Gohan for lunch. I just interpret it as an alternate take on the original events, with everything running parallel to the tv version. Goku and Gohan are supposed to meet up with everyone at Kame House but in this version he is kidnapped first and Goku arrives alone and gets the Dragon Radar. He tells everyone about Gohan at that point in time.

It appears to be midday in Z episode 1 and evening in Z movie 1 *shrug* I get that literally Chi Chi says “Gohan, meal time “ for both but I think its fair to interpret it as lunch in the tv series and dinner in the movie.MyVisionity wrote: Thu Sep 03, 2020 5:07 pmNeither the show or movie has Chichi mention which meal it is, just that it's "meal time". I actually felt it was STARKLY mid-day in Dead Zone considering how bright some of the establishing shots were, it was really cool.MasenkoHA wrote: Thu Sep 03, 2020 5:29 pm It appears to be midday in Z episode 1 and evening in Z movie 1 *shrug* I get that literally Chi Chi says “Gohan, meal time “ for both but I think its fair to interpret it as lunch in the tv series and dinner in the movie.

Re: Dragon Ball Rewatch, Week 36 - DBZ movie 1 (CURRENT WEEK)
Dead Zone is totally one of my favorite of the DBZ movies.
I know the movies have a reputation for basically being amazing fights connected with paper thin stories, but this one has one of the more solid plots in my books. Goku goes out to save his son, but happens to uncover Garlic Jr's diabolical revenge plot against Kami, so he and Piccolo end up having to team up to save the world too. It's simple and straight to the point, but in a good way, like Cooler's Revenge.
The visuals are really top notch here. Garlic Jr's castle is a real unique setting for the fighting to take place where in most of the other movies it'll either take place in "Generic rocky plain/valley #11" or "Unspecified urban location #28", so it's a treat to be looking at something fresh.

Bless you for trying to make a real good movie timeline. There are a lot of times where trying to fit the movies into themselves is like putting the square peg in the round holeKBABZ wrote: Thu Sep 03, 2020 3:06 pmI'm doing a "Movieverse Timeline" project where, for fun, I figure out what all the between-movies events are in the movie timeline. Re: Dragon Ball Rewatch, Week 36 - DBZ movie 1 (CURRENT WEEK)
Yeah haha. Thus far the only major problems, Dead Zone aside, is the gap between DB M1/M2 and what happens to Chiaotzu and Tien after DB M3. I expect I'll have much more to contend with later, but I'm pretty proud of myself for spotting FIVE issues with Dead Zone and figuring easy ways to adjust for all of them (most folks I've noticed just pick up on the Gohan thing and don't think about the implications of having Dead Zone replace Raditz).ArmenianPepsi wrote: Fri Sep 04, 2020 8:56 pm Bless you for trying to make a real good movie timeline. As for the fifth thing, totally forgot to list it above:
- Goku, Krillin, Bulma and Roshi meet up a year early. This voids the context of their meet-up at the start of the Saiyan Arc to end the five year timeskip, as there's much made about how it's been too long since they last saw each other. A possible solution is that this element isn't present for the Movieverse meetup. Another is that the emergency meet-up due to Gohan's kidnapping was so brief that it effectively didn't count (it may even serve as the inspiration for the Saiyan Arc meeting as it reminded them they hadn't seen each other in so long, maybe even providing a secondary reason why Yamcha wasn't invited).
