Dragon Ball Edited 2001 Funimation Dub

Post by Tom_Servo » Wed Sep 30, 2020 4:42 pm

Hello all!

I have located VHS recordings of the first 28 edited Dragon Ball episodes from Toonami broadcasts circa August 2001. My source is working on putting these recordings on DVDs and sending them to my address.

I will be working on a detailed edit log for the Pilaf saga similar to the one my buddy KBABZ did for the Harmony Gold tapes that Ryan Gavigan and I uncovered back in February. I also intend to share the VHS recordings to various archives as soon as I get the discs.

Source says he’ll mail them out to me by tomorrow and I should get them sometime next week.

Sweet! I've been hoping for Chris Psaros-style episode comparisons on original DB for a very long time now, so i'm very excited for this.

Wow this is quite interesting, it's been so long since i last saw these (since back in about 2002 when i was 7/8 during the original run) so this will be cool to have as a guide for how the Toonami edits were different compared to the Japanese version and uncut dub.
DB collection related goals as of now:

1.) Find decent priced copy of Dragon Box Z Vol. 4 (Done)

2.) Collect rest of manga

3.) Get rest of Daizenshuu (2-7)

This is exciting because these are most likely the airings of the show that I watched as a kid!

This is brilliant news. Recordings of the edited Funimation dub of OG Dragon Ball are quite rare.

Just wanted to say from all of us here your awesome. First the Harmony Gold episodes, now this
Do you have any info about international non-English broadcasts about the Dragon Ball anime or manga translations/editions? Please message me. Researching for a future book with Dragon Ball scholar Derek Padula

This is interesting! I always wondered how close the edited VHS singles were to the Toonami broadcast, I hear they're slightly less cut (possibly meaning Cartoon Network did some small edits of their own).

Update:

Source mailed six DVDs containing the recordings from his local post office to my address today. United States Postal Service tracking estimates they’ll be in my hands Tuesday. Upon receipt of the discs, I will write and publish a report documenting all the changes made by Funimation in the Pilaf saga compared to their easily available uncut releases. I also intend to release the recordings to the Internet Archive (assuming that’s still around by then). I’ll let you guys know if anything changes. Thanks!

Speaking of Ryan, did you ever get a chance to do another transfer of his tape Tom?

When it gets to the Roshi training/21st Budokai, there are a few edits that are double standard.

His tape is currently in the hands of a Discotek producer for a more professional transfer. Only issue is he’s had no time to do the transfer. As soon as I get more info, I’ll let y’all know.

Apparently for the TVY7 rating, men/boys in underwear or bare butts= funny. Women in underwear= sexy. A little too sexy as a brief bit of Lunch in her panties was cut and the Namu/Ranfan fight is cut heavily.

That’s not even a double standard. Toei deliberately played Ranfan stripping to her underwear as sexy. Goku’s butt did get censored in Z when he’s an adult. Cartoon Network/Funimation were probably okay with his butt in Dragon Ball because he’s drawn more cartoonish anyways. It’s not really a sexist double standard as much as its an arbitrary distinction.

For god sake you’re not suppose to find naked Goku titillating.

I was curious if they reused the same edited shots from their 1995 Dub, like changing Bulma's Underwear with Dollars, or if they redid those edits from scratch, because seeing it now, a lot of those paint edits look pretty terrible

It would be interesting in getting the info on what they censored on those episodes for CN

It’s been so long since I’ve watched the edited run of the show that I can’t even remember how exactly Cartoon Network handled the censorship.

I think they kept the money change and one of the commercial breaks showed the "fish full of dollars" joke. Outside that, like the uncut dub they just used "zeni" for currency. Though do recall unlike the 95 one, they did show Yamcha konk Chi-Chi over the head. Old one cut to Puar's reaction and hearing a slap sound effect and Chi-Chi calling out before showing her knocked out on the ground. (Though it still oddly enough showed her decapitating and blowing up a t-rex).

Going off of memory, I believe they kept the exact same paint edits. Scenes with nudity etc are completely cut out and the dialogue is made tamer, for example Oolong!Bulma tells Roshi that she likes him instead of flashing her chest.

First, get your mind out of the gutter. I was saying apparently it was ok to show his bare butt and in in underwear, but they wouldn't show women in underwear. Even if it wasn't sexy or fanservicy.
