Does anyone else feel that much of the DB fandom enforces low standards?

Discussion regarding the entirety of the franchise in a general (meta) sense, including such aspects as: production, trends, merchandise, fan culture, and more.

The problem is: DB is such a completely different beast than Demon Slayer. A lot of that comes to how DS is structured. Even DBS is still structured after classic DB in its narrative--just, you know, worse.

Demon Slayer, and other shonen of its type, are more personal narratives and can support the kind of quality over quantity structure that makes it successful. DB is pretty much designed to put out as much content as humanly possible.

With DS, the biggest reason they are so successful is because of the anime. I have never watched or read DS, only heard that it's a pretty solid series, but certainly nothing groundbreaking. But the anime adaptation was so successful, the manga sales skyrocketed.

I just LOVE how much song and dance is made about Demon Slayer's quality yet no actual demonstration of it is made? What does it do better than Dragon Ball? Does it use its characters better? Better pacing? Better World Building? No, its just "Better Quality" as if that is an objective thing.

The sword animations are really nice.

Yeah. That's a good thing. Nice animation. That's always great.

It does all of the above better than modern DB, and yes it is an objective thing.

Ummm, no one is saying that?

Also these questions are easily answerable if you just watched the show.

Yes. They did. Matches Malone post did not have any arguments to it. Other than its "Its good takemywordforitkthnxbai". Only the person who actually said "It does all of the above better than modern DB, and yes it is an objective thing." actually gave me an answer. Only their little comeback backfired because I meant to say "People saying better quality" isnt objective while "Does it use its characters better? Better pacing? Better World Building? " DOES have an objective answer AND THAT Proves Demon Slayer is better than Dragon Ball. So he or she won the argument but decided to be petty instead.

And Please dont tell me to check out a series just so you can win arguments.

Dragonball has always been heavily criticized compared to whatever popular anime was airing in Japan, the same happened in the 90's and early 2000's. Every time a new shonen comes out, people always say, "this is much better than Dragonball" and of course they're free to do so, and many prefer other similar action or shonen anime over Dragonball.

This isn't a new concept, you guys don't remember the same thing happened in the 90's and early 2000's? People always said, "this show has much better action scenes, writing, and animation than Dragonball Z." I remember this since 2001.

I don't think I said it like that, but I'll answer your questions. If we're comparing it to the original DB, then it's pretty subjective, as both have good characters, good worlds, good plots, etc... If we're comparing it to modern DB, then just about any name you pull out of a hat does everything better, much less the current biggest manga in Japan. You'd have to go through a good number of names before finding something as mediocre as modern DB.

So yes, go sit down.

Don't worry about it, this year has made it difficult to be in anything other than a ranty mood. Hopefully next year things will improve, as I'm really tired of all the chaos this year has brought us.

Another annoying thing I see in much of the fandom is folks bash OG Dragonball/Z just to defend Super, and folks who bash/downplay other anime just to defend DB in general.

I agree with both of these. I think people believe that there's something wrong admitting that what they like isn't the best in its field, which isn't the case at all. Is DB/Z the best Shonen ? far from it, but it's still my favorite, and always will be. You don't have to bring down others to justify why you like something, just like it for what it is.

I think we should all step back from fandom and just like what we like how we like it. I know there's a need to share that love but I am really beginning to suspect that forums and the like are not the place for that. Fandom cannot be some all-consuming aspect of our lives. I guess that's funny to hear from a woman who has spent literally half of her life on this forum and has 13,000+ posts but it is definitely something that has come to my mind the older I get, the more responsibilities I get of importance and the like.

Basically, fuck fandom, hang with your friends and fuck everyone else. :D
