One simplistic, cartoonist style for when characters are viewed from a distance, and one hyper realistic style when close up. It's almost like how in Ren and Stimpy, you'd occasionally get these gross close up shots with a ton of detail.
Never saw Ren and Stimpy, but the same feature was used in Powerpuff Girls and Dexter's laboratory on occasion. Seems to be something done in a bunch of 90's american cartoons. No clue if current shows make those gross, detailed close ups.
I don't know if Ren & Stimpy invented that detailed closeup style, but they definitely popularized it.

Ah, the glory of two glowing old guys beating each other up. Not that interesting since Vegeta officially became a 'good guy', yet modern DB insists on hyping it up.

It's not about the stakes. For Goku and Vegeta, it's a test to see how far they can go, and see who ultimately comes out on top. I believe in Dragon Ball Online, the last time the two are seen is when they fly off to space to have their last battle where no bystanders can be hurt. I think that's a fitting end for them.

Agreed. Its like Yugi vs Atem, there wasn't really a lot of stakes but you were waiting for it.

Huh, I really hadn't thought about them that way. Very good analogy

Well... good for Goku and Vegeta and I am aware of the DBO storyline. It's just not that interesting to me, nor is the dynamic between Goku and Vegeta since they came friends. DB fights are great when they DO have stakes and tie into a story, otherwise it's just glowing guys punching each other, which on its own is not that great to watch. Even a 'climactic' battle in space means nothing compared to the drama of the Saiyan saga fight and even the Majin Vegeta story arc.

Counterpoint: Most of the tournaments had no stakes and had some of the best fights in DB.

Having this special from Pan's POV was definitely the right call.

Never thought I´d say this, but this special is a breath of fresh air away from that Bra crap they´ve been shoving down our throats.

Art aside, it is a palate cleanser.

It's a breath of fresh air to actually have a degree of focus on the original universe for a change. I've been waiting for Goku to be relevant to the story in any way for years.

When the tournament goes back to normal, whenever that will be, it seems like the final match will be between Goku and Vegeta. I really hope they bring their A+ artists for this, as it's been a long time coming.

I think it's inherently stupid the implication vegeta could surpass Gohan literally or functionally and that he's an equal to Goku. They are canon characters who get screen time in canon this grand multiverse thing ending with just wanted Goku versus wanked vegeta sucks....

So this special feels like build up to something I don't want.

At least the Bra stuff was original...

All the organisers are dead and the control tower blew up so there's real stakes even if the rest make it back, and now it's a second long wait till it continues. Bleh.

Goku vs XXI is most likely the finals.
