Anyone Else Have a Love/Hate relationship with the anime?

Post by bkev » Wed Apr 30, 2008 9:20 pm

Hi all,
I have a love/hate relationship with the anime, particularly Z. Why? Well, I'd love to do a really long Kunazit-style post about that, but my attention span blows, so I'll keep it short.

Love:
-The voices, any language. Hearing your favorite lines, regardless of how cheesy at times they are, is pretty cool as compared to reading them sometimes.

-It's animated. Like reading your favorite book, only each panel comes to life.

Hate:
-Because I grew up with the dub, I'm conflicted on which is better. I want to love the Japanese version, but with the mono sound being of such low quality on FUNi singles, I often end up switching to english; then I hear a cheesy one-liner, and switch back, asking myself what I was thinking.

-Filler can be both good and bad, but often it is bad in DBZ. Anyone ever
manage to get through the whole Freeza fight in one sitting?

-The overstatement and inconsistency of power*. This is a big one, for me. Let's compare Goku's fight with Cell to his showing-off powerup to Ginyu in the anime (I lack clips, however I have seen both at one time.) Goku's Kaio-Ken power up, in this scene, is almost earth-shattering. Everything around him moves, the wind starts, the still water makes waves, and everyone is going absolutely batshit insane. Cell vs. Goku? Everyone sits there in awe, as they teleport from place-to-place. But, what about the land? Not until one of them pulls a "OMYGODSUPERFINISHER" does any impact even close to that of Goku's supposedly weaker Kaio-Ken powerup appear.

I'd like to know your thoughts

*This may actually be a flaw in the whole series itself, not the anime.
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
The thing that really bothers me about the anime is the animation quality. In the manga, you have Toriyama-san's beautiful, ever evolving art style. Then when you watch the anime, particularly Z, you're treated to one episode that looks like it was drawn by the gods, then the episode right after it looks like monkey piss.

One looks like this:

And the other like this:

Maybe it's was the budget, maybe it was the crappy team they out-sourced some of the episodes to, but either way it still looks like crap. I think there's somewhere between 4-5 different teams working on the series and I like all of them except the one team noted above. The worse part is, that team works all the way through Z and they work on GT. Their artwork is so distinguishably bad yet they had the honor of animating about half the episodes. It's seriously a chore sometimes watching those particular episodes.

I also have a hate/love relationship with DBZ.

Love:

Animated, who does not like animated series? there awesome.

Great characters like Vegeta(The arrogant talker),Goku(The kind and caring father who kills for his family and friends),Gohan(The kind son of goku who has really the same personality of Goku),Chi-Chi(The not-so-kind mother who hates that Goku and Gohan go out fighting and that likes Gohan studying really the typical caring mother),The humans(Tien,Yamcha,Krillin,etc..the loveable humans who are all Goku´s friends and that would fight for the world and there friends).
There all amazing characters.

The Sagas, these are the sagas I loved:
Vegeta Saga(I loved the classic Goku vs. Vegeta fight and the fights and the great drama)
Frieza Saga(amazing saga one of the best expect the Long, repetitive fight of Goku and Frieza)
Cell Saga(Great saga it had some action packed fights and great drama)
I dont want to name anymore because I dont want to make this so long.

The action, it was awesome I loved the energy blasts and hard punches and kun fu kicks and all those big energy blasts like the Kamehameha,Final Flash,Galick Gun,etc.
The action in DBZ was one of the best.

The fights, it was also awesome and fun to watch nearly every DBZ fight for me is quite enjoyable.
Here I will name my faves:
Vegeta vs. Goku(in the Saiyan saga)
Majin Vegeta vs. SSJ2 Goku
MSSJ Goku vs. Perfect Cell
Mystic Gohan vs. Gotenks-Buu
ASSJ Vegeta vs. Semi-Perfect Cell
Vegeta vs. Zarbon
Majin Vegeta vs. Fat Buu
LSSJ Broly vs. MSSJ Goku
Super Buu vs. SSJ3 Gotenks
SSJ Goku vs. 5th form Cooler
SSJ3 Goku vs. Kid Buu
Piccolo vs. Android 17
Android 18 vs. SSJ Vegeta

and many many more....

Hate:
Some filer episodes, which were quite boring.

The Garlic Jr. Saga:
It was quite boring and the fights were not so good.
I hated it because there was no vegeta and goku and because it was just filer and what was the point in this saga? they should of made a cooler saga it would of been a better storyline, and has we know DBZ movie 1 the dead zone it was about Garlic Jr I mean they should of just left the movie and that´s it for me it was just the worst saga.

That Vegeta never killed a IMPORTANT villain.

And that´s really it, I dont mind the rest.

But in all in DBZ is a wonderful anime which will always be one of my favorites. :D
Life is Life.

Or maybe the fact that Pic's in the top one automatically improves everything :D

(I'm sorry. it was just too tempting)

No, no, you're right, Piccolo makes everything better. So long as you don't piss him off.

I really can't stand the way fights drag out for so long (the manga Freeza fight is perfectly paced; anime, um, not so much).

Also, the Super Saiyan hair should be bright gold (Mirai Trunks's first appearance) or sort of glowing-from-within-gold (Goku on Namek; "Holy Super Saiyan," I call it).

Not pale-bleached-blond (most of the Androids/Cell saga).

I also have a love/hate relationship with the anime.

The inconsistent quality in animation bothers me quite a bit. In the important eps its good, but in the not so important eps, it's terrible.

Most filler and the little tweaks from the manga bother me. I will make an exception for several things though: the Majin Vegeta/ SSj2 Goku headbut scene was filler, it was one of the best animated sequences in the entire series. The driving school episode was also to die for, except the last five minutes of it that was the cheesey saturday-morning cartoon action hero sequence with heroes saving innocent children and saving the day.

Love Hate with GT

Post by saiyanprincess » Sun May 18, 2008 4:42 pm

I have a Love-hate relationship with GT.

I hate it... I hate that they gave Vegeta a haircut and even worse... I think they must have been on some stronggggg substance when they gave him a moustache!!!

I hate the annoying fact that Pann is... well annoying, I also hate the fact that Trunks is made to appear like a weak, sensible, human!

I admit, later in the series I do begin to... dare i say... love it...

I do enjoy the fusions with Goku and Vegeta, the Super Saiyan 4 forms, and the bitter arguing and childish taunts that they throw at one another. Some of the battle sequences are also excellent, I.E Goku and Vegeta VS Omega Shenron.

One of my favourite scenes has got to be Vegeta and Bra driving, Yes I know its a filler, but it is quite humorous :-) It is cute that he is so protective!

After watching all of GT, I did have a slightly different feel for the actual series... Maybe it wasn't as bad as everybody said, and maybe I didn't actually HATE it after all!

...Then I saw the ending... I can't believe they ended it with Goku joining with Shenron to protect the planet
It could have ended slightly better...

The battle sequence at the end with Vegeta Jr and Goku Jr was interesting, it leaves many thoughts which is not always a good thing.

End result, I hate GT but I also love GT...
It's a shame some of the series was ruined with silly little mistakes. Now if Gill the robot were to be stamped on, Trunks turned Super Saiyan a little more, Vegeta not with a moustache, and Pann... Well Pann left in space.
I would not have to hate GT.
"Ok, use your instincts Kakarott. Right or Left? (Hmmm... I'd have to say... left.) Good. Then I'm going right!" (Vegeta to Goku as they try to find their way to free the others inside Buu - Episode: The Innards of Buu)

The only thing I have ever disliked about Dragon Ball (DB/Z/GT) is the inconsistencies in the animation. That's it.

The inconsistent animation in DBZ never really bothered me, as even if the art differed, it was always fairly high quality. It's not like other shows now, such as Naruto Shippuuden, who's animation directors differ incredibly, so much so that I now have a whole archive of them (That's regularly referred to) on NarutoForums.

However, my love hate relationship with DBZ stems basically, and purely down to the fillering. So many times I remember a fantastic moment of a fight, so I sit down to watch an ep of that fight... and it takes so long to reach any point really worth watching, and when I do reach it, it suddenly doesn't feel worth it.
I love humans, always seeing patterns in things that aren't there.

For the most part I really enjoyed watching dbz and GT (yeah, I haven't watched db, kicked me to the balls!) But sometimes I was like this while watching dbz:"Son of a b*itch! too much F*ckin filler! Just go to the bloody Namek!"
And with GT, there were too many plots, but if we don't count them (wich is really hard!) it was pretty decent 8)
-"this is madness"
-"madness? no.. this..is.. dragonball!"
