I'm not only seeing it as a purist, but the thing is Dragon Ball can only be portrayed in animation. The whole premise of the series is so out there, animation is the only way it can be conveyed. Trying to recreate the fantastic effects, species and landscapes in real life is just going to look plain silly. I don't care who you have writing, directing, and acting. It's just going to look dumb.
But "OMG IN the MATRIXX NOE AND AEGNT SMIHT FOGHT LIKE IN DBZ IT WAS the COOLZORZZZ!!!!11" Yes, they fought like in Dragon Ball. AND IT LOOKED LAME. Seeing them fly around was just ridiculous. Think about it. Do you really want to see a grown man, dressed in bright orange wearing a blond spiky wig taller than his head, doing wire stunts against a CG lizard thing on a bluescreened background?
Tell me I'm not the only one who would be embarassed to see this.

And then I woke up and it turned out everything I ever heard about a live action DBZ movie, regardless of whether it will be poor, decent or kick-ass, just turned out to be a bad bad dream.
The End
...is my current ultimate wish.

Aw, come on Jersey! People, this move could so easily be amazing beyond belief. Don't write it off before it's even made. Besides, no matter how bad the movie turns out to be it'll still be better than the LotR movies.

Don't worry, we'll just pretend you're being very witty and that it refers to the Strong Breed, that your name really means "Omae's mother". Good story, that. Think I'll talk about it over in the random boards later.omae no kaasan wrote:"Omae no kaasan" means "Your mother". Basically, he insults us with each and every message he types.ufu

Anyway, Zechy is sort of right. Are you honestly saying that even if they make an amazing, awesome, superb DBZ film, you'll still hate it? Isn't that a bit petty?

*looks back and forth at everyone*
Now I dont know what to think! I mean, if they can make Spidey cool like that, then yes, it could be good but....then again, Goku isint masked and everything, this could easily suck..but then again, we shouldint judge it before its made but..
Now I'm confused. Ok, if they make it and I see previews, then I'll judge if I'm like it or hate it.

I've never felt like this about anything before. When I heard about X-Men I knew changes were going to be made, but since X-Men is based in reality somewhat I knew it could work. Same thing with Spider-Man. Yellow spandex doesn't work onscreen, but substitute it with black leather and nothing is lost; it's still Wolverine you're looking at. If you take away ki auras and gravity defying hair, is it still a Super Saiyajin you're looking at?PsyLiam wrote:That's the attitude nerdy comic fans have had for years. Setting is another thing. X-Men takes place in Massachusetts. Spider-Man takes place in Manhattan. You can actually go to these places; they're real. You can't go to any place on Earth that looks remotely like Namek. They'd have to bluescreen the whole thing, and as George Lucas has demonstrated for us filming a movie entirely in front of a bluescreen just looks lame.
.....Have you ever seen a the Lord of the Rings movies by any chance?
For Namek, just go to a foresty place with lotsa water and trim the trees to look ugly.

A ki aura strikes me as something that would be fairly easy to do with SFX. As to the hair...that's a bit more of a challenge. But then, I never thought they'd be able to do Wolverine's hair, but they still managed to do something that was remoniscent of his comic style while still looking sensible in the real world.
As for Namek, do what Dayspring says. Dye the water green if you have to, but does it really matter? If Namek didn't have the god-awful colour scheme it does in the cartoon, will we stalk the streets saying "This is worse than Batman & Robin!"?

I've seen Lord of the Rings, of course. However the Middle Earth landscapes didn't have any alien foliage. Look at Namek trees vs Earth trees. They're too different. Middle Earth trees look the same because it's not supposed to look like an alien planet.
I frequent a Star Wars fanfilms board and lots of people have done Dragon Ball effects tests. Some of the ki blasts have managed to look pretty good, but ki auras have a way to go. I know someone can make them look good, but it's if they can get it to look right that I'm sceptical about.

Yes, because what a fan with $200 and a weekend to waste is OBVIOUSLY going to produce better results than professionals with a multimillion dollar-bit and a year or two of time to get things right.Mizugi wrote: I frequent a Star Wars fanfilms board

All I can say is, No. We do not need any more 14 year old 'OMG LIEK GOKU IS KEWW1!1!11 HE CAUN KICK UR AZZZ!!!1' fanboys.
I think I remember looking in a Beckett magazine one time and they gave a photoshopped pic of that one actor who was rumoured to play Goku with Goku hair. It looked pretty interesting.

Liam I never said "hate" I just said I won't care about any live action DBZ that's made no matter how realistic and well done it is. To me DB is the manga and animated series that is the spitting image of it. And if it was up to me, a live action movie would never be made. Having the manga and anime is enough for me and a live one will never count as being part of it in my mind. It will be an Americanized Hollywood interpretation. Even if the ideal were to happen and the creators treated it with as much respect as Peter Jackson treated Lord of the Rings, it will still be that. DB was created by a Japanese manga-ka and the anime was created by Japanese animators. Since this movie will be made by Americans, it's impossible for it not to have certain aspects to it that will be missing. It's hard to word, but it's to do with the two different cultures and how our thought processes are different too. A story the Japanese make will always be presented differently than that same story presented by Americans. That's why it won't be the same DB I know and love in the end. So I don't care. I hope I made at least a little sense explaining the reasoning behind my feelings in this post.PsyLiam wrote:*stares*Xyex wrote:Aw, come on Jersey! She's right. Directing film is utterly different in Japan and America, mostly because there's too many subtle differences in pacing, story, writing, characters, and so on that add up to a different experience. Just look at the differences between an American comic and a Japanese "manga." Storytelling changes from culture to culture.
And just imagine if Japan made something American into something all their own. Oh, wait. Just watch an episode of the Japanese Spider-Man show...
