Dragon Ball Rewatch, Week 1 - DB Episodes 1-5
Re: Dragon Ball Rewatch, Week 1 - DB Episodes 1-5
I remember in the manga Bulma was thinking to herself it wouldn’t matter about Goku wanting to keep his dragon ball after the wish because the dragon balls would scatter. It made her seem really mean spirited and callous like she was amused that he was going to lose his dragon ball. The anime just had thinking Goku would be a good bodyguard or something. And yeah she knew about this fact in the anime too but she didn’t seem amused by this secret

Re: Dragon Ball Rewatch, Week 1 - DB Episodes 1-5
Yeah, that panel gets adapted into the anime, but they reword Bulma's inner monologue a bit.
Manga:
Mufufufufu... Umaku itta wa. Dragon Ball wa ichido negai wo kanaeru to barabara ni natte dokka ni tondetchau no yo ne. Omake ni kono ko nara watashi no bodyguard ni pittashi!!
Heh heh heh... I talked him into it. See, after the Dragon Balls have granted one wish they scatter and fly off to wherever. And this kid is a perfect bodyguard for me, too!!
Anime:
Umaku ikisou. Kono ko nara bodyguard ni pittari da shi, negai sae kanaerarereba sore de ii n da mon.
I seem to have talked him into it. This kid is a perfect bodyguard, and as long as I get my wish granted it's not like anything else matters.
That last line in the anime is pretty vague, and unless you know what Bulma knows about what happens when the Dragon Balls grant a wish, you can interpret it in all kinds of less "ha ha I tricked him into allowing me to basically give his ball up for good"-y ways. I just don't get why they removed this detail, it's not like Bulma comes across as a particularly good person in this arc even with this line gone.
(EDIT: On second thought, I think I'm just overinterpreting based on what she said in the manga, and that the line is just meant to be taken as "Nice, I think I talked him into letting me have his Dragonball eventually. I'll have to babysit him until then, and while I don't really want to, it's a sacrifice I'm willing to make for the sake of my wish")

The internet archive has the first four edited Funimation episodes from the Toonami broadcast up. I didn't feel like watching all four from start to finish but I did spot check them for some edits.
Some interesting Cartoon Network edits (that I don't think were mentioned yet)
-episode 1-
*Goku does not get underwear painted on when he's fishing and is still skinny dipping. Though obviously any shots of his genitals are removed. When he jumps to kick the fish a blue blur is added to cover his junk
*Bulma's "If you think we're going to do anything improper you can forget it!" bit is removed So in the edited version she knew what Goku meant when he talked about the two playing together. So in the uncut version she thought he was innocent and adorable for not knowing what "doing improper things meant" in the edited version she thought he was innocent and adorable for wanting to play together.
*For some reason Shuu is named Shao in at least these edited episodes. I guess this was something Funimation fixed before the Madman dvd releases? If I remember right Mai still calls him Shao when they're in the valley in episode 2 in the uncut version though.
*Uncut version
Goku: Pit stop? What does that mean?
Bulma: I need to pee lame brain!
*Edited version
Goku: Pit stop? What does that mean?
Bulma: Goku!!!!
I dunno, I don't think Cartoon Network would have an issue with the uncut version.
-Episode 2-
*Uncut version Bulma: What do you do super glue it to your butt?
*Edited version Bulma: What do you do super glue it to your back?
Again this is one of those things I feel like would have been fine with Cartoon Network's BS&P.
*In the uncut version when Shuu "confesses" to farting he says "I did it I tooted I passed gas I'm a stinker!" in the edited version Shao says "I did it nothing gets past you sir!"
*Everyone and their mother knows the infamous and iconic "your balls are gone!" scene was removed but the weirdest part is for some reason the "and the morning break" music cue that plays when Goku is waking up is instead played over Turtle approaching Bulma's house replacing the Pterodactyl music cue.
Episode 3
*Roshi's request to see Bulma's belly button has been mentioned before but I kind of think it's weird she doesn't even show him anything (at first) after he and turtle argue over the ethics of him requesting such a thing it just cuts to Bulma saying "So where's my gift at?" she doesn't lift up her nightgown "to show her bellybutton" until after he needs more convincing to hand over the dragon ball with some boing sfx added
Episode 4
*Goku patting Pocawatha's crotch is removed and him saying she is girl is changed to him just saying "You are pretty! For a girl! It's a shame Bulma doesn't look more like you!" When he ask why Bulma hit him in the head in the uncut version she says "Guess Einstein!" in the edited version she says "I'm pretty too dumb breath!"
*Just like the BLT version (I think?) Goku patting Old Lady Paozu's crotch is removed and he just says "How come you're so old and wrinkly!" Old Lady Paozu's "You're a randy boy!" is replaced with "My word how rude!" Bulma's "Please stop doing that !" after hitting Goku in the head is subsequently replaced with "Are you crazy! You can't say things like that!"
*And of course obviously Bulma pulling her jacket back to show that "she's all woman" and Oolong's puff puff fantasy are removed so after Oolong ask if such a vision could be real it cuts right to Bulma asking when he was going to kidnap her.
*I guess because Funimation was bored a *boing* sound effect is added when it cuts to Goku peeing.
---------------------------------------------------------
I give you romance is severely edited down to the point of being comical. It's literally just the first and last line of the song. And of course Mystical Adventure and the commerical bumpers are replaced with Toonami's own custom versions of clips from the show.

Honestly I really wish I could expand the trivia here, especially since we know SO MUCH more about the Harmony Gold dub that covers this exact block of episodes.ArmenianPepsi wrote: Thu Dec 10, 2020 1:11 am Real dedication on your part to put out an update on these older threads![]()

There's no reason we can't go back and revisit these older threads to add additional trivia after the main rewatch is done.KBABZ wrote: Thu Dec 10, 2020 1:25 amHonestly I really wish I could expand the trivia here, especially since we know SO MUCH more about the Harmony Gold dub that covers this exact block of episodes.ArmenianPepsi wrote: Thu Dec 10, 2020 1:11 am Real dedication on your part to put out an update on these older threads![]()
The point of Dragon Ball is to enjoy it. Never lose sight of that.

Honestly it was in the back of my end. Like when I saw the Toonami version again a lightbulb just kind of went off “Oh that’s why I only ever remembered the song going “Be brave as you can be a childlike love a fantasy....make your dreams come true, you’ll see fantasy...magic can happen to you!”
Same reason I never remembered Rock the Dragon but did remember the instrumental version for the outro. With the exceptions of the 3 movies, Toonami just got removed the Rock the Dragon Intro completely.

LOl the song is totally butchered in that form, although it's funny to see it again after almost 17-18 years. Kinda odd after only knowing the full version for so long.MasenkoHA wrote: Mon Dec 14, 2020 7:10 pmWittyUsername wrote: Mon Dec 14, 2020 6:57 pmThat’s one edit I remember very well.MasenkoHA wrote: Wed Dec 09, 2020 8:11 am I give you romance is severely edited down to the point of being comical.
