Japanese "-jin" and "-sei-jin" Usage

Post by John » Mon Jun 28, 2004 4:44 pm

Vegeta seems to have always referred to Earthlings as "Chikyuu-jin" (People of Earth). However, when he refers to Namekians, he says "Namek-sei-jin" (People of the planet Namek). How come he never called them "Chikyuu-sei-jin?" Is it simply because people in Japan don't say it that way?

Which makes us "Terrans"? Is that how you spell it?

[Insert Starcraft reference.]

The Japanese name for Planet Nameck is Namekkusei. All planet names in Japanese end in -sei ("star"), like Suisei is Mercury, Kinsei is Venus, Kasei is Mars, etc. Earth is the exception, and their name for it is just Chikyuu.

Yes absolutely correct. ^_^
Jerseymilk: "Can I tell you something?"
B-kun: "What?"
Jerseymilk: "I see Fangirls."

Yep. Terrans. I hardly ever refer to this planet as Earth, unless it's absolutely necessary...

Who the Hell named it Earth, anyway?

Remembers dub line from Bardock special.

Soldier 1-"So where's this kid going?"
Soldier 2-"Some planet called, E-arth."
Soldier 1-"E-arth? Well sorry kid, we dont name em, we just send you there."

Or something to that effect.

I actually thought that line was kind of funny. :P

I found it hard to believe that they wouldn't know a thing like that if they had any knowledge of the planet whatsoever... but I did find it funny.
