Wow, you actually gain more picture on all sides than on the Dragon Box, and it looks nearly as good(if not better)! Excellent work FUNimation!

I really don't know why the new FUNi dub would have the sound effects from the Ocean dub in Movie 2, but to answer your question 1: they aren't too distracting, unless you're a total purist who hates any change/addition to the original audio.MagicBox wrote: They couldn't have been stupid enough to add the sound effects into the old background music track they got from Toei a decade ago and not keep a clean, unedited copy, could they?
So, I gotta ask, how distracting are the sound effects? I haven't seen the Pioneer/FUNi dub in years, so I don't remember at all. Are they added in every few seconds, or is it a rare occurance that we hear an added sound?
I have another question. By any chance, if you've watched the dubs in their entirety, did you notice any script differences between this release and the "First Strike" boxset? Also, is the commentary kept, or is this a barebones release?
The only thing that I would say is distracting is the fact that the Japanese music is far less audible in the dub, since the sound effects and voices are so much louder. The added sounds only mainly occur during explosions or ki-based attacks. I guess when Ocean dubbed DBZ, they didn't feel the original sounds had enough "oomph" or something, because they are at times louder than the music.
As for the second question: The dub dialogue from the "First Strike" boxset is totally intact here. Which is good, since FUNi's dubs of Movies 1 & 2 were closely following Ocean's dubs, which were very accurate to the Japanese version.
Movie 3 is a different story... since they copied that TV dub Ocean did of Movie 3, instead the more accurate Pioneer release. I guess we'll see what happens with that once the Movies 3 & 4 Double Feature is released.
And to answer your final question. The dub commentary for Movie 1 is intact for this DVD (and presumably the Blu-ray as well) ...
Oh yeah, here's a few shots from the Movie 2 disc before I go to bed.
I have to point out that the "disappearing lines" thing is not an issue with these remasters.

Keep in mind these shots are from the DVD release. Not the Blu-ray.
If Blu-ray shots were posted here, they'd be a much bigger file size and would stretch the page like crazy.
BTW, ultimateemail5000, May I suggest that maybe you should rename the thread title to include the DVD release? (or to at least show that there are screenshots posted.)

It could be a case that theyd do a bluray of movies 7-8 and then 9-10. It isnt the first time an utterly unnessecary release has been replaced with something more linear. the Broly bluray disc I imagine was moreso to test waters than anything else.
Screens look nice but it's all about how it plays out in motion. I would've considered getting these bluray discs, but I dunno. How are the subtitles? How is the Japanese audio in comparison to the Dragonbox?
Might just sit on the fence till the eventual Japanese BR release.

They'll just re-re-re-release them? Like they have with everything else?Kula wrote:So what do you think Funimation will do when they get to movies 7 & 8?
8 & 10 have already been released on Blu Ray.
Do you think they'll make a 7 & 9 set followed by an 11, 12 & 13 set? In any case, I assume there will be six sets altogether, one of them having three movies.

Of course, they wouldn't pass up an opportunity to fuck over the fans once more.ect5150 wrote:They'll just re-re-re-release them? Like they have with everything else?Kula wrote:So what do you think Funimation will do when they get to movies 7 & 8?

It's good to hear that there are no disappearing lines. And I've never had a problem with the film-grain removal (they do a great job of it actually), but the color-levels are still off. While the colors look nice and vibrant in some screen shots, we lose the dark background details often (it's too dark to see details).
That said, if I already didn't have DBox Movies I probably grab it. It seems like the most competent FUNI release yet.

I didn't realize this while posting the pics, but looking at the comparison you did, FUNi's new transfer actually has a bit more space on the sides than the DBox. Craaazy...
Of course, if you want to get really technical, Region 1 has always had more of the frame than the 16:9 video, since FUNi apparently had the 4:3 film masters all those years.
Either way, this new style of release does look to be the "closest to the DragonBox" that we'll be getting. Thanks for posting that pic, ect5150. I was waiting for someone to post DBox comparisons, since I was curious how FUNi's stacked up.
But yeah... both video transfers are well-done. I can't bash FUNi for this one, like I can with the TV series.[/i]

Maybe in the sense that you actually get the JPN version w/ subtitles, 2 dubs, and judging by the comparision ect5150 did, a teensy bit more space on the sides than the DBox.shotkeeper wrote:This is one is better then the Dragonbox....

In that case, very nice improvement over the TV series remaster. The screen even shakes in movie 2 when Gohan powers up, so if there's no disappearing lines there, then that proves FUNi pays more attention to these than the actual series. Kudos to FUNi.theoriginalbilis wrote:I have to point out that the "disappearing lines" thing is not an issue with these remasters.
Thanks for the screencaps, originalbilis. They help a lot.
Glad to see that the commentary has been kept as well. Now there's no reason for me to keep my old "First Strike" DVDs.
This set seems perfect in the eyes of a sub fan. Perfect subtitles, great picture, and the unaltered Japanese audio with all the songs. Plus, as a bonus, I finally get an English dub of the films with my favorite English cast and the original score (even if the songs are missing in a sense). The pros outweigh the cons; I'm double (or quadrupil, in movie 1's case) dipping. Hopefully this release will suffice for a long time, so that I don't have to re-buy movie 1 every couple years.

I'm curious. I know in the series they took out the insert songs, but...what did they do in the movies? In Dead Zone and the World's Strongest, there are two (one in each) tracks where Gohan is singing (I believe). In the Ultimate Uncut editions of the movies, that was obviously replaced by some trashy music (hate Faulconer all you like, he had the best score for the series, whether it be GT, or the Ultimate Uncut's craptastic music). What did they do here? If they took out those two songs...then um...what is there? Quiet for a minute and a half?

I am assuming the bottom picture is the DBOX edition, since the colors look really foggy. So I can say that the stateside release looks a hell of a lot better then the DBOX.ect5150 wrote:

If you'd read, like, a single post in this thread, you'd know the answer to that. Go back to the first post and read carefully.TheGreatness25 wrote:I'm curious. I think you can click the "Edit" button at the top-right corner of your post and then change the subject section. If that doesn't work, then I dunno.ultimateemail5000 wrote:I would do that, but I have no idea how too.

Dead zone used pure silence, and Gohan's annoying laugh, and The World's Strongest, used horrorible rap music like what they did with GT. Hahaha, I kid. You should seriously read the other posts though. They either re-composed the the songs theirselves like with the DB intro and outro, or used the instrumental versions. It's hard for me to know, because I never heard either songs without vocals.TheGreatness25 wrote:I'm curious.
