"Cowa!" to appear in July's US Jump

Post by DaemonCorps » Mon May 19, 2008 8:24 pm

Well, I got June's volume of US Jump a while back and figured I'd share:

First up is the announcement in the back telling that in the next issue (July), there's gonna be a sneak peek of Toriyama's "Cowa!" It's not exactly DB related, but it's good to see that Viz has at least taken an interest in some more of Toriyama's work. (Hopefully the other Neko Majin chapters will follow...)

Then there are your typical ads for the latest DBZ DVDs and game to come out. Apparently, they're really focusing on that whole "Kamehameha" thing in their Burst Limit ads:

... and finally there's an interview with Donny Clay about the game. I'm sure what's mentioned in the interview, y'all already know, but check it out just in case:

I've never seen anything of Cowa outside a single picture so this is going to be neat, can't wait to read it.

I don't read Viz's Shounen Jump anymore, but I do agree that its good that they're translating some of Mr. Toriyama's other works.

Anyway, I'll probably get that issue of Shonen Jump at Christmas, my local comic book shop gets them really really late.

Well, it's a good thing I actually decided to continue my subscription to Shonen Jump. But they really need to up on those One Piece volumes. They've done so for Bleach and Naruto, so it's really the next logical step. Finish up Alabasta, then bring it back to SJ when they reach up to Foxy or Water 7. Yes, I understand One Piece isn't exactly their best seller but if those uncut sets from FUNimation do pretty well, I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility.

Well this is certainly cool news. I haven't read Cowa in years, so it'll be nice to revisit it again. :)

With Bleach, they did straight GNs at first anyway before the anime even premiered in Japan. They only put it in the magazine so they wouldn't catch up to the Japanese so fast.

I got the issue yesterday. It's nearly level with Dr. Slump in terms of comedy. I didn't count, but I think there were at four to five farts in the few chapters in the issue  Toriyama's one o' them people that makes poo and fart more hilarious than most others (like Arale's poking poo with a stick hobby).
Battle High 2, starring Kyle Hebert as well as myself, has been released on Xbox 360, OUYA, PC, Linux, Mac, and Xbox One!

But they're still pretty much well caught up on the material, so that doesn't really disprove my point. Viz is just way too behind on the One Piece side of things, either do what they did with Naruto, or at least give One Piece fans a bi-monthly release ala Eyeshield 21 and HunterxHunter.

Do you really expect SJ to push anything that isn't Naruto,Bleach, or Death Note? I'm suprised Dragonball got a decent run in the magazine.
The series doesn't start with the arrival of Raditz. Stop being lazy and watch Dragonball.

Well DB only got a decent run because Viz was still kinda-sorta pushing it (along with Yugioh) back when it was in Shounen Jump. I don't think the three you mentioned became super-popular until after DB left Jump (and maybe even around the time it finished being published in graphic novel form).

Case Closed/Detective Conan, while not by any means advertised by Viz at all, gets new volumes published quite frequently; it's like every two months or so.
Sure its not at the speed they're publishing Naruto, but its being published way faster than One Piece and Dr. Slump (both of which come out with new volumes every four months).
On hiatus.

Viz is whoring out Naruto and Bleach right now, but it won't last long once those titles start to drop straight downhill in their later arcs. Mostly thanks to its great new dub, One Piece's superiority will become clear eventually, and Viz will give it the treatment it deserves, and hopefully finally recover and fully break free from 4Kids' venomous grip on it.

At least DragonBall is getting decent treatment, what with Kanzenban-like releases starting up, Toriyama's other works getting some attention, and not being afraid to still hold special features on it in the magazine from time to time.

I noticed that some of these characters resemble characters from DB/DBZ. I guess that it's hard to come up with hundreds of completely origional characters designs (understandably).

I admit I used to get sick of all those Yugi covers they had after DBZ stopped in the magazine. Poor YYH only had one cover and it was back when it was still on Toonami.

I couldn't stand them either (the Yugi covers; there's nothing wrong with diversity, Viz. >_> Variety is a good thing. )

Viz's favoritism really turns me off. :?
Give the other series in Shounen Jump equal screen time on the cover. Not everyone wants to see the same face on a magazine cover month after month after month.

YYH had the cover 3 times I believe. Also, I think other SJ series would be popular if Viz pushed them the way they pushed Naruto.

Hmm, this looks pretty cool. I really loved Sand Land, so I'd like to see more of Toriyama's works outside of DB.

Read Dr. Slump. Whenever I read a new volume I can't stop laughing.
