Re: How did you get into Dragon Ball?
I just happened to catch it on Toonami. I watched Cartoon Network a lot, so it was inevitable.
Re: How did you get into Dragon Ball?
My earliest memory of Dragon Ball is probably playing Ultimate Battle 22 back in 1998 or-so with one of my friends and my brother, so it's possible that UB22 was my first entry into to the series but given how god awful that game was it would be a rather disappointing introduction to the franchise if true. Maybe I saw it on TV at some point prior, but I have no recollection of that. I'm honestly surprised I didn't swear off the series for good after playing it.
What struck me the most was the music in the game rather than the gameplay or characters, and given I was learning piano at the time in primary school I thought a cool thing to do was learn the piano intro to Hikari no Willpower and play it for my music teacher. So curiously enough, it was Yamamoto's game music that got me into the franchise.

Re: How did you get into Dragon Ball?
I caught an episode of Dragon Ball playing one afternoon during its short-lived syndicated run, it had to have been on either UPN or WB. I don't remember which episode it was, but that theme song was certainly memorable. That was it for that though until either later that year or the next year when I woke up one morning for school and turned on the television, flipped around and caught what was dub Episode 2 playing during Z's syndicated run which was on my local WB network. I'm not sure if it was the first run but it had to have been one of the earliest ones if it wasn't. I remember wondering when they'd be done fighting this guy and get back to trying to find the Dragon Balls, if only I knew. Either way I was hooked after that and watched religiously every morning. My first piece of home media was 'Captain Ginyu - Double Cross' because my 11-year old reasoning was that one had four episodes and 'Captain Ginyu - Assault' only had three, so I wanted the one with more. I was very confused by the change in the voice cast, but still I watched the hell out of it. The rest I suppose is history, I was so excited when new episodes came to Cartoon Network and I couldn't wait to watch every afternoon.
I also have Dragon Ball to thank for getting me into another one of my favorite franchises, Gundam, really anime in general. Toonami smartly put Gundam Wing on at 5:30 after Dragon Ball Z, and I saw ads and promos for it until finally one day instead of flipping to another channel after it was over I decided to stick around.

I'm right there with you brother. For a period I was every bit as much into Gundam as I was Dragon Ball. I was obsessed with the model kits, and Char's Counterattack is one of my favorite animated films of all time. There was something special in he air back then. That one-two punch of Dragon Ball Z and Gundam Wing is one of my fondest television memories.Char Aznable wrote: Mon Feb 08, 2021 11:02 am I caught an episode of Dragon Ball playing one afternoon during its short-lived syndicated run, it had to have been on either UPN or WB. Lived in the States briefly in 1999, saw some of it on Toonami. Then saw it when it aired on Cartoon Network UK in March 2003, and the rest is history.
Do you have any info about international non-English broadcasts about the Dragon Ball anime or manga translations/editions? Please message me. Researching for a future book with Dragon Ball scholar Derek Padula

Very cool, I've always wondered if that's been the case with anyone. I've become a genuine fan of a lot of movies from seeing them on MST3K.
