Re: Curse of the blood rubbie rare dub
Hi,
I won the auction.
Indeed, I'll only be keeping the contents to myself. I don't intend on ripping and sharing it (with the whole world) because that would literally be illegal. So, to the pirates here, please stop your whining.
I'll consider sending it to Chris Sabat.

Damn, I wish we were as dangerous to capitalism as this entire VHS episode made us out to be.
Re: Curse of the blood rubbie rare dub
Yeah my bad I got a lot of stuff wrong. I'm not a professional in this stuff like AT ALL and wanted to clear some stuff up. The 720x540 resolution is only because of my Media Player (mpv.net) scaling the video up with Spline36. the actual video is 720x480 like it should. Another thing the AC3 audio is only present on the encoded version while there was a proper FLAC version of the audio done as well. The one I was given had the AC3 audio instead of the FLAC which was ripped separate. I also wanted to apologize as I spread some mis information about their work and it's far better than how I described. I'm not perfect no one is and I make mistakes and misjudgments (a lot of them actually). Please ignore anything I've said about audio or video quality on his rips as it's most likely wrongRobo4900 wrote: Mon Feb 22, 2021 7:06 am I wonder who got it in the end.
Given the fact it went for $1500, I'm guessing a speculator bought it as an investment/collectors' item, knowing how much it went for in previous auctions.
Those can't be raw screenshots unless there's resizing built into the ripping process, which would be very bad; standard NTSC video should be 720x480, not 720x540 as those screenshots are.Venny wrote: Sun Feb 21, 2021 11:49 pm Here are some raw screenshots from his Laser Disc transfer of Dragon Ball Z Movie 1. As you can see it looks fantastic and even has raw 380 kbps AC3 audio directly from his player. He isn't some random dude transferring back old LDs from his dad's attic with no experience like you seem to want to portray him as
You said in your next post that the video can be cropped; that's not the problem here, the videos on the guy's YouTube channel don't show the letterboxing in the screenshots you're showing.
That's not a mixing error, it's deliberate, and it's a good thing. The left ear is the complete audio mix of the movie, in the highest quality it has ever been presented in (primarily because it's lossless unlike DBox, and it doesn't have the awkward noise-removal techniques from the Blu-ray), while the right ear is a music-only mix.Venny wrote: Sun Feb 21, 2021 11:49 pm The raw digital audio track is very poorly mixed. Voices/sfx come out of one ear while music plays in both channels.
If the Laserdiscs were transferred competently, these two tracks would be captured losslessly, and then presented as two mono tracks. (Remember that most of the movies were mono only)
This is different for Z movie 13 and the 10th anniversary movie, which were mixed in stereo. Interestingly, the approach the Laserdiscs take there is that the digital track is music-only, while the analogue track is the finished mix of the movie (but it's pretty definitely lower quality than the Dragon Box DVD audio).
The analogue track is, I'm pretty sure, a bit distorted and generally poor in quality, and is inferior to the Dragon Box DVD audio, even though that DVD audio is lossy.Venny wrote: Sun Feb 21, 2021 11:49 pm The analog track is mixed far better and is much better for a watching experience than having poorly mixed digital PCM and is what Toei used for their Blu-Ray audio.
As for it being "what Toei used for their Blu-ray audio", I find this assertion baffling. I was under the impression Toei transferred the cinetape sep-mag masters of the movies' audio for use on the Blu-ray (just like they previously did for these Laserdiscs, and for the Dragon Box movies).
Finally, whether you captured the digital or analogue track, capturing it to AC3 is a poor choice, as it's still a lossy conversion of a source that originally had no digital compression at all. It's akin to creating a preservation of a rare Beatles demo tape by saving it to a 192kbps MP3.

I'm sorry to see this has angered you so deeply. However, please remain civil and do not throw insults at me for buying something for myself with my own money. I didn't take anybody else's money so I am baffled as to where this entitled attitude from anybody else comes from.Arian wrote:Mon Feb 22, 2021 12:48 pm FUNimation already has it, you dumbo. If they wanted us to see it, it'd already be on a Blu-ray.
What I want to know is, if you don't want to preserve the product, why did you bother buying it? Just to stare at it?
So, "indeed," I hope you stare at it so much that you at least get dry eyes if nothing else.
I'm sorry, it just really gets my goat when hoarders poorly justify their behaviour under the guise of "Piracy is bad." If it wasn't for piracy, you wouldn't have even known about what makes the tape elusive. Moron. Probably got into Dragon Ball last year and now is "schooling us."
This level of entitlement is sociopathic so I hope you aren't actually thinking I am under some obligation to do anything for you.
And yeah, I won't be ripping or uploading it online but I will let you guys in on some interesting stuff I find out while watching/listening to it.
Alright, well Funimation supposedly has a copy but I'll still get in touch with Chris Sabat in case they need a second copy.
edit: Okay, you seem to have deleted the post...fair enough.

Re: Curse of the blood rubbie rare dub
The seller told me they wouldn't say who bought it saying "that would defeat the purpose of a private auction" so so much for that I guess.

Was the hate for Kai largely unjustified?
Super Saiyan Prime wrote:It's an edited, cynically produced, cheap recut with a poorly utilized ancient score and awful scene recreations that later got traded in for a weird green tint.
The story of Kai's production is far more interesting than the actual product.

Anyway, I'm sure it's fine for me to post a few short clips I'll record with my phone if it's like new interesting details or whatever. But the demand for somebody to illegally rip and upload the entire thing?? That kind of talk is actually happening here?

Re: Curse of the blood rubbie rare dub
A lot of the interesting parts have been posted by Twitter by another user who had a copy. Basically, that version wasn't ripped to the best quality and has some issue so the users here (myself included) wanted to buy it and rip it to the highest standard as a way to archive it and allow others to see an era of Dragon Ball (FUNimation/BLT in a Harmony Gold-like state) that was, until very recently, unknown.Lightningexpose wrote: Mon Feb 22, 2021 1:49 pmHuh?Arian wrote: Mon Feb 22, 2021 1:40 pmNice try, Enigmo.Lightningexpose wrote: Mon Feb 22, 2021 1:33 pm

At the very least, I would be interested in higher quality scans of the sides and top of the box as those arent available (the ones on ebay aren't bad...*insert Maxwell Lord voice* but it could be better.)
At the end of the day, it's your decision and as much as it aches the rest of the community, we must accept it. I'll keep an eye out and see if another tape pops up. It's crazy it went up that high and while it's rare, it's nice to see Dragon Ball (let alone BLT dub) see some Dragon Box level love lol.

You do realise he very likely didn't actually win the auction, and is only posting here to try to troll people?
Read his posts. Very clearly bait for people who wanted to see this ripped and shared on torrenting sites and the like. Don't feed trolls, friends. It's not worth it, and it only guarantees they won't go away.
Yeah. On the tape, it says "Curse of the Blood Rubie". Not sure exactly why, but it's supposed to be a sort of prototype/demonstration tape, this one given to investors, going by the product description.

The point of Dragon Ball is to enjoy it. Never lose sight of that.
