Buu arc without a timeskip - How does it play out?

So let's say it occurs about a year after Gohan defeats Cell. Similar power level, look, strength as before. Goku remains dead, Vegeta is still around. Gohan doesn't get to the Saiyaman phase and is still homeschooled and has the same demeanor he did in the Cell arc.

With Gohan still at full power and Vegeta having no reason to mess everything up, chances are Babidi gets stopped even before Buu is released. Future Trunks said he was going to go back in time and tell everyone he beat the androids, so it happening during that time increases their chances of preventing Buu's release.

Gohan, Piccolo and 18, because let's say she is already dating Krilin and she is willing to help, would do as Shin tells them unlike the saiyans. They would go knocking on Babidi's ship and through every level until reaching Dabura. Pui Pui and Yakon shouldn't be a problem for Piccolo and 18. In fact, perhaps they weren't even drafted at that time and Babidi has some even weaker minions. Definitely not stronger ones.
If the slacker Gohan could resist somehow against Dabura, post Cell arc Gohan kills him. Buu would never wake up.

Vegeta should still be 'retired' and unaware of the threat.

I think this would lead to Vegeta playing more of a mentor role to Gohan. The Buu storyline in general remains the same sans Goku returning. Gohan instead relies on the resources, companions, and training that made his father so incredible and puts them to use.

Something about Gohan being trained by both of his father’s greatest rivals would be dramatically perfect IMO.

And then of course he fails and Goku comes back, saves the day, etc.
