What does the Z stand for?

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

Well, in my opinion, adding the "Z" at the end wasn't entirely necessary at all. They could've just continued the series as Dragon Ball, just creating new arc titles. Pretty simple if you think about it. Oh well.

I always assumed Z for Z warriors but I'm pretty sure that's very wrong.

It's true that Goku is an adult throughout all of DBZ, but he also was an adult in the final storyarch of Dragon Ball, so that view is a bit overly simplistic.

I'm fairly certain the Z-Senshi moniker came from Dragon Ball Z, not the other way around, but I could be wrong there.

As for why Z, before I knew anything I did think it was for Zenkai (ala closing song Zenkai Power), but from the interviews I've read from Akira Toriyama, as others have said, he put Z there because he wanted people to think it would be ending soon. A bit of irony, that.

 Oh, classic.

That was from the "Falsely Answered" questions on good ol' Planet Namek. If I rack my brain, I remember they also said "Z" stood for "Zoinks!" because Toriyama was a Scooby Doo fan. Oooh, good times.

Regarding GT, I think Toriyama might have said that it stood for "Grand Touring" instead of the popular "Grand Tour."
