Was Rumiko Takahashi an influence on early DB?

Was Rumiko Takahashi an influence on early DB?

Both use a setting that blurs aliens and mythology (Urusei Yatsura had alien ogres, DB is the Monkey King though the aliens came later), characters with word puns, used a rounded smooth artsyle (which was early DB).

Was Takahashi an influence on Toriyama in the early years of DB?

I doubt it as Toriyama didn't really read manga growing up from what I've read

Don't think that'd be an issue as Rumiko-sensei's about the same age, if not a little younger.

The weird stuff Toriyama was doing with Dragon Ball went all the way back to Dr. Slump.

Urusei Yatsura started in 1978, two years before Dr. Slump, it could have influenced Toriyama. Urusei Yatsura did lots of weird stuff, comedy and wacky characters. Of course he could have come up with all of that by himself, it's not like Takahashi invented comedy but Urusei Yatsura's success means Toriyama must have been aware of it, you don't start a comedy manga and don't know one of the big ones currently running.

Toriyamas first published manga was Wonder Island in 79 I believe and that was only his first published manga I heard he created 300 rejected manga before that. I doubt Takahashi was any bigger influence on him, then he was on her.

That's an impressive high score for anyone, never mind a 24 year old who's probably only had about 5-6 years to be submitting manga.

Oh wow that's a lot of rejected pitches, but ultimately Dr. Slump ended up being the big smash hit shortly after that catapulted him to massive success.
DB collection related goals as of now:

1.) Find decent priced copy of Dragon Box Z Vol. 4 (Done)

2.) Collect rest of manga

3.) Get rest of Daizenshuu (2-7)
