Weird thing about the Pioneer DBZ singles

So, I have all the Pioneer DBZ singles digitally, and now I'm trying to convert them into loose episodes... But something's weird. It was my understanding that the Pioneer singles were the shortened, censored version of DBZ, aka 276 episodes... But now I'm looking at Vol. 21, the Frieza saga, and it has the episode "Piccolo the Super-Namek"... Which is an episode only appearing in the uncut version of DBZ.

Does anyone know exactly how this works? I know for a fact the first batch of Pioneer DVDs are the cut up dub, because it has the combined episode 1&2 in the Saiyan saga and everything.

The episode you’re referring to isn’t part of the original 53-episode run FUNimation made over the course of two syndication broadcast seasons from 1996-1998; it’s an episode FUNimation produced in-house for season three which debuted on Toonami and home video.

What you have isn’t a single disc from Pioneer’s release of those first two seasons, but rather a FUNimation single disc from season three. If you look at your actual disc this should be fairly apparent...?

Oh... Okay. So even Kanzenshuu acknowledges that the numbering is weird. The overall numbering of the DVD singles follows the cut up version, but they did include uncut episodes that were mish-mashed into one for the original broadcast. That's... Odd.

Yes it really is, it's confusing given the way they slammed them together due to Krillin's impalement by second form Freeza and a lot of Gohan getting tortured being heavily censored/cut entirely when aired edited on Toonami in 1999. They had to account for the fact that they were included intact for the home release hence the weird unnumbering and also the disparity between the two versions.

Pioneer only released the original season 1 and 2 for Funimation (episode 1-53) after that Funimation started releasing the show themselves. Like VegettoEX said this should be apparent if you look at your dvds Pioneer’s name is nowhere to be seen .


Anyways once Funimation started distributing the show themselves to home video they released two versions “the uncut” version and the edited version. For the edited version of season 3 “three episodes” were edited down to two due to content (mostly Krillin getting impaled by Frieza) to keep the episode numbers between the edited and uncut dub consistent “Piccolo The Super-Namek is just left unnumbered.

Not really. They can’t advertise their dvd as uncut and then release a chopped up set of episodes.

I was wondering who the hell published those DVDs past the Namek saga in the US. So Funi did that themselves. Because in Australia (and possibly other PAL regions), the same DVD singles were published by Madman, and they published the whole thing from beginning to end. Well, almost the same. I've heard there's some quality related differences between the two, but the volume numbers and names are all the same.
