Re: Dale Kelly narration
His narration was good for the Funimation revision of the show, but it didn't fit for a more accurate version, much like Kyle Hebert's narration.
His Ginyu was fine, even though I preferred Armstrong and Elliot in that role. Now that I think of it, all three sounded rather similar as Ginyu.

Re: Dale Kelly narration
Elliot sounds like a mix between Armstrong and Kelly. Of course, the whole reason Elliot was cast in the role was because Armstrong retired by that point, so he might have been asked to do a similar voice.8000 Saiyan wrote: Sat Aug 28, 2021 4:08 pm His narration was good for the Funimation revision of the show, but it didn't fit for a more accurate version, much like Kyle Hebert's narration.

Re: Dale Kelly narration
I don't think Hebert was a good fit for narrator, either. He doesn't have a narrator's voice. He has the voice of someone TRYING to sound like a narrator.

Re: Dale Kelly narration
I wouldn’t call it good. It was very try hard and cringe so I guess it fit Funi’s reversioning. Tbh I honestly didn’t like any of the Texas voices for Ginyu. Richard Newman was the best by far. Kelly’s Ginyu just made me think of cheesy 80s kid cartoons villains. Re: Dale Kelly narration
Having a goofy voice for a goofy character works fine, the issue is his performance. I don't rate him highly as an actor. Armstrong has an amazing voice, but sounds too old for Ginyu. Elliot splits the difference. Richard Newman's performance is still my favorite

Re: Dale Kelly narration
I have to agree. A lot of Funi's season 3 dub reminded me of an 80s dub at times and he was probably part of the reason for that along with the music. And yeah, Richard Newman is my favourite too though I would also add in Richard Epcar's Ginyu as another good casting.Tbh I honestly didn’t like any of the Texas voices for Ginyu. As far as narrators go, Doc Harris and Doc Morgan are the only fitting choices we've had in my opinion. I never liked Dale Kelly's delivery as he made everything sound dark like he was reading a Frank Miller comic. With Kyle Herbert, I just found him to be a total miscast, he just had the wrong kind of voice that reminded me of a Nascar announcer or Monster truck announcer. It was a similar problem to Steve Olson in the Blue Water dubs, he just sounded like a news anchor and there was nothing the actor could do to fix that.
Re: Dale Kelly narration
Goofy voices for goofy characters are fine. But Kelly’s performance was just awful. I think Armstrong is better suited for more benevolent characters like Norimaki and the narrator. Would have liked to have seen him voice King Kai.ABED wrote: Sun Aug 29, 2021 10:47 am Having a goofy voice for a goofy character works fine, the issue is his performance. Re: Dale Kelly narration
The thing about those other narrators is that they sound too larger than life. Dale Kelly sounds much more natural, almost like he's one of the audience right there with the viewer. The other guys sound too disconnected and high-grounded to relate to the audience. Kelly's dialogue and delivery could be cheesy at times, but at least there was some kind of attempt to be relatable and connect with the viewers. I think that his enthusiasm is often misunderstood as him being "over the top".

Nothing about this performance is even in the same continent as natural and relatable. This isn’t some dude telling his friends a story this is some WWE announcer cheesing it up for the audience.

I thought that was pretty good actually. Very natural. His interjections felt very relatable, "Wow!"... "Look out Gohan!" And just the right amount of enthusiasm without overdoing. It didn't sound forced to me at all.MasenkoHA wrote: Sun Aug 29, 2021 11:46 am

Re: Dale Kelly narration
Regardless, it wasn't DB. Even though DB changes over time, it still retains its roots which aren't over the top monster truck rally announcer.

How does any of that sound natural? What? It’s absolutely forced and overdoing it.MyVisionity wrote: Sun Aug 29, 2021 12:18 pmI thought that was pretty good actually. Very natural. I consider Brice Armstrong the best English speaking narrator.

Re: Dale Kelly narration
It's more subdued than usual. The wrestling announcer or commentator is an interesting comparison and one I don't necessarily think fits but even if we use Macho Man as a comparison, he was always in character, but there are times when he's more subdued. The difference is that Savage was playing to a live audience. Even as an announcer, he is part of a performance that plays to a live crowd. DB's announcer is not playing to a live crowd. He's supposed to sound like someone telling a folktale to a child. It's supposed to sound, warm, inviting, and at times, even cheeky.

Re: Dale Kelly narration
I find Kelly to be very warm and inviting. It's a gruff warmth. A dark warmth.
I don't get the whole "folktale" vibe with DB. Maybe early on, but mostly I never viewed the narrator in that kind of role.

And DB's roots were a Journey to the West parody. Of course it's a goofy folktale.

Re: Dale Kelly narration
There is lots of darkness in DB.
It starts out a goofy folktale but then switches gears pretty quick.

That stuff is always there and there are dark moments, just like folktales have dark moments in them, but it's not a dark story.MyVisionity wrote: Sun Aug 29, 2021 2:46 pm There is lots of darkness in DB.

Re: Dale Kelly narration
Kelly, Hebert and Chandler all had this problem with their narration, they all sounded like they were trying too hard whereas with Armstrong and Morgan sounded natural.

Re: Dale Kelly narration
I have never heard anyone use the argument that Dale Kelly sounds "natural" to describe his narration. If you like it, that's fine, but he's got the most unnatural and over the top performance of any of the English narrator VAs, which was obviously FUNi's intention with his casting and how his narration is written.
