Ultimate Uncut Series

Post by SSJ2 Dark » Fri Jun 06, 2008 12:30 am

A recent wave of nostalgia persuaded me to consider purchasing the Saiyan saga of DBZ. I think there's too many quality issues with the remastered box sets, so I was thinking of going with the Ultimate Uncut series. They seem quite available, and I think I could get the entire set for about $40. Also, I really have no interest in the Namek or Ginyu sagas, and I already own most of the DVD's from the Frieza saga onward.

However, I wanted to make sure that the UU series has the new Funimation dub. Also, I was interested in some opinions regarding its overall video quality. I know I can't expect Dragon Box quality, but is it at least up to the standard of the regular single Funimation DBZ DVD's (Frieza saga, Cell saga, etc)? Basically, if you own the UU series or have seen a good deal of it, I'd like to know your views on it.

Thanks for any responses.

FUNi's Ultimate Uncut discs include the FUNimation redub of the episodes, but they lack the dub-with-original-music track that the season sets have. Video quality is okay. Episode 1 looks really bad, but the others look decent enough. The first volume has some pretty neat bonus features as well.

Of course, any positive thing I could say about the Ultimate Uncuts is negated by the fact that they only go up to episode 27 and that FUNi discontinued them before Goku even arrives on the battlefield.

Yeah, whats up with that? I've never before seen that episode anywhere close to good quality. It looks really fuzzy and dirty, and sounds muffled.

Hold on.. I own some of the UU and they do have the new re-dub, the japanese version, the spanish version and yes, they DO have the enlgish dub voices with the original Japanese music option.

Only thing is, the first UU has a cool interview with Sean and Chris that wasn't included in the Box Set.

What UUE sets did YOU buy? They have the option to listen to the dub with UUE music or falconer music, but there is NO option for the Japanese music.

And yeah, as stated earlier, they don't even get to Goku getting to earth, so it's not even the entire Saiyan Saga.

What are you talking about? I have that exact DVD and the English voice w/ Japanese music option isn't on there.

The Ultimate Uncut series only have the English dub with broadcast music, Spanish dub and the original Japanese version. If you thought one of the audio track options was the original Japanese music track option, then try it. Because the English dub track simply doesn't have it. If you're confused to as what the original Japanese music is, then watch the Japanese version than switch to the dub.

Those DVDs simply DON'T have the Japanese music option for the DVDs so it sure sounds silly hearing you say that. Or it could just be some kinda bootleg. =P

A bootleg of Season 1 in 4:3, with uncut English dub, and Japanese music? That's one tempting bootleg!

Thanks for the responses, everyone. The UU series is looking pretty good so far, at least compared to the remastered sets.

I forgot to ask, does Episode 27 conclude the Goku Vs. Vegeta fight? I have Episode 27 listed as "A New Goal...Namek!", but I know the episode numbering gets a little sketchy due to the added scenes near the beginning.

That would be the 27th episode of the old, hacked-up dub "season 1". The actual episode 27, the one included in this set, ends with Piccolo getting killed by Nappa.

The episode it gets up to doesn't even have Goku fighting Nappa. I think it's right before "Lesson Number One". Don't go by the old Pioneer/FUNimation dubs, they have considerably less episodes than the uncut version. They stopped releasing the Ultimate Uncut Editions way too prematurely. Now fans will forever have to rely on Season 1 without even a choice of having the rest of the Vegeta/Namek Saga on DVD.
