As long as they're in 4:3 format, they will be awesome! 8)

4:3 is Full Screen

The other one, 16:9, is Wide Screen (Black bars on top and bottom to some).

The reason everyone cares about this so much is that all of the Dragonball anime was drawn is 4:3 format and meant to be viewed in that format. Funimation thought it would be cool to cut off the tops and bottoms of Dragonball Z so that it would be in 16:9 (widescreen) because widescreen is becoming more popular. The problem is that we are no longer seeing the whole picture each time we watch Dragonball Z in these season sets, way to go Funimation!

I don't see what's so bad about the widescreen thing. It's not really that bad to me, it's not like I'm actually missing anything important. So I may miss out on a few clouds, or some grass, or a couple of Gohan's cowlicks. I'm pretty sure I'll live. Unless Funimation starts using AnimeLabs footage and the bars cut out the subtitles, then I don't think it's that big of a problem.

A lot of people agree with you that losing 15% percent or so of the picture on the top and bottom is not a big deal. I personally am not extremely turned away by this, I mean the season sets are still the best way to watch Dragonball Z in English (since it's the only way to watch all 291 episodes).

I'll post some pictures later that show you exactly what parts of the picture you are losing and the small amount of picture you are gaining.

*Edit: Here desirecampbell gives us a great in-depth look at the difference's in the aspect ratios we see DBZ in.

Only selling point for this (since I have all 20 DVDs of GT) is that it will have the original Japanese music with the dub voices. That is a huge plus.

I agree AND i always love seeing new ways for packaging like the bricks and I'm always interested in the cover arts [which season 6 for DBZ is a MAJOR let down]

I'm just concerned about my wallet! Season 6 of DBZ, plus movies 3/4, as well as GT season 1? Wow!

DBZ will be my priority on this one, and GT will have to wait a paycheck.

u.u I was so glad that FUNi was releasing box sets of Case Closed, but with that and DeathNote as well, this is gonna cost a pretty penny.

I agree with you guys. I care more about having all 291 episodes than Goku's hair. You can say all of the criticisms about the set that you want, but I'll reply by saying, "Before the Remastered sets, I had only 33 episodes of DBZ, most of them from the Buu saga, and a few movies. Now I have the first 165 episodes and both TV specials." But if Funi decides to use fansub footage for the last 4 sets, then count me out.

Well, Dragon Ball is gonna have to wait.

One Piece: Season One - Part Two is coming out the week after and I have my Ghostbusters spending spree in October.

There's no reason for that. At least it's something positive.

I feel the same way. The only reason I never bought any Dragonball, or any series period, was because I didn't want to hunt down the few bits and parts that I might be missing. At least with these releases we have full sets with the promise of more sets to come.

Before the season sets, I had bought the Slug and 1st Coola on VHS, and Bojack and 1st & 3rd Broli movies on DVD. The only one of these purchases that I still have is the Slug movie.

Since the first Season set came out, I've purchased seasons one through five and the two TV specials and first two movies. I also picked up the three Dragon Ball movies w/ the Broli 3-pack. I would not have bothered to even think about picking up the series hadn't a consistant release been announced. Now I have GT to look forward to.

I've always wanted to own the Dragonball series and now thanks to FUNi I will. I can deal with a couple of missed lines.

Before the Season sets, I had most of the movies, but the majority of the episodes I had were from the Buu saga. I bought the Babidi saga box et back in 2005 for 50 fucking bucks, and periodically from 2002 to 2005, I grabbed the following singles: Fusion - Hope Returns, Fusion - The Last Saiyan, Majin Buu - Defiance, Fusion - Ambush, Kid Buu - Saiyan Pride, Vegeta Saga - Arrival, and Cell Games - Awakening. But now, I have the complete Saiyan, Namek, Frieza, Android and Cell sagas for a combine cost of only $120.

So, there are two things that concern me about this release:
1. Is it gonna be the same cropped "remastered" format as DBZ? If it's in 4:3, I can live with the remastering if it's as good as the movies, but I somehow doubt that it would be.
2. FUNi has stopped using alternate angles, so even though the GT-rap will propably be gone, I don't think there is a creditless version of ending 2, 3 and 4 or opening 2, so we might not get those. Also, I'd hate for them to only include the english title-cards, as the english and japanese episode-titles don't match at all.

If they can avoid those issues, (Either get a creditless version of the other OP/EDs or just leave the credits in japanese and have a separate english credit-scroll as an extra, leave the title-cards in japanese and DON'T TRY TO REMASTER IT) then I'll buy these sets. If not, I'll stick to the australian release.

Actually in DBZ, you can do alternative angles. Not for the opening and closing because the US ones were shorter than the Japanese ones, therefore causing more information to have to be packed in, but the opening and closing (I'm pretty sure that if you switch alternate angles it would have the Japanese letters in it...also cropped differently and has different colors lol) and definitely the title cards can be switched.

But the new release of movie 1 and 2 doesn't have alternate angles, and neither does their newly released One Piece-set, although that's not such a big deal, as the english episode-titles are direct translations of the japanese ones and all the names are properly translated. But neither of those are true for Dragonball, the dub and sub use completely different name-spellings and the titles are completely different.

Actually, I own the final single volume of FUNi's GT, and in the "textless songs" section, there are creditless versions of both GT opening animation 2 and ending 4. I would assume FUNi has creditless versions of endings 2 and 3 as well. We should be fine in that area.

Y'know what?
I want them in widescreen.
Call me a dick, but I'd like consistancy in my DVD collection, and shit, if some of its cropped, it may aswel all be cropped.

I was thinking along similar lines, but at the same time if they only crop one series and leave the other two alone, they might go back and fix it later for consistency's sake. So, if GT and DB and un-cropped then maybe they'll eventually go back and fix DBZ.
