Re: Dragon Ball Super Gets Cancelled Overseas Over Sexual Harassment Claims
You asked "why are people talking about US politics on a Dragon Ball forum" before, and the answer was pretty obvious: it was politics that extended beyond the US, and while admittedly a tangent, it was one that pretty logically followed from the topic at hand. Not gracefully, mind you, but it's not a difficult course of events to keep track of.
Re: Dragon Ball Super Gets Cancelled Overseas Over Sexual Harassment Claims
It's one thread out of a billion others that are about Dragon Ball. Its' not that big of a deal, and I never understand the sort of people who get "upset" when politics break out. It's the side-effect of people clearly tired about talking about another thread regarding dvd releases or power ups or whatever. I mean, this place has been up since I was a kid, and I feel like everything that has been said and will be said has been done countless times over.
An off-topic thread, while I'd be down, I totally understand why the moderators do not want to go there. I'm already surprised they let us get this far with this thread, probably because we try to keep it to this thread, but all bets are off the moment an off-topic area is created.

Re: Dragon Ball Super Gets Cancelled Overseas Over Sexual Harassment Claims
It seems like people are always looking for a free pass to go off topic and discuss politics. Either "one thing led to another" or "ya know people are tired of discussing actual dragon ball". Then what's even the point in having certain Dragon Ball topics if people are going to discuss whatever they feel like? This wasn't even about power ups and DVD releases. This was a fresh topic in the DB universe since many people tend to defend Roshi or laugh him off. In my forum-ing experience there was barely anyone having the guts to stand up and discuss how problematic he is. But screw any future DB topics because we're tired of discussing DB so we gonna argue off topic on a DB forum.
Re: Dragon Ball Super Gets Cancelled Overseas Over Sexual Harassment Claims
The discussion naturally morphed into this because of intersecting elements.
Re: Dragon Ball Super Gets Cancelled Overseas Over Sexual Harassment Claims
It's just -- there's not a lot left to discuss in relation to this topic. Roshi sucks, some people complained, now it's delayed until it gets edited. I'm not sure there was a lot of great deep discussion here before, mostly it was someone going "THE LEFT WANTS TO CENSOR EVERYTHING" and us saying "You fool. You absolute fucking buffoon", and I don't really think that the current state of discussion, where there's no posts until me or polyphase responds again and then someone goes "oh man off topic" is really monopolizing valuable conversation space.
If anything, the thread should probably just be closed.

Conservatives are so good at controlling the narrative that they actually have dumbass reactionaries online thinking that Lefties are, like, weird anti-porn and censorship fiends when in reality that's just massive projection on their part.Shaddy wrote: Sun Oct 24, 2021 12:27 am It's just -- there's not a lot left to discuss in relation to this topic. But yeah, I'm not sure what other purpose this thread has other than to separate out people with shitty views.
Re: Dragon Ball Super Gets Cancelled Overseas Over Sexual Harassment Claims
Absolutely. Its bad faith arguing. Us lefties are typically for sex positivity, as in we are all for being horny when everyone involved is consenting. A lot of the LBGTQ community are all into porn and erotica. It doesn't make any sense to cast the left as being censorship, when we're also the group that's all about inclusivity. But you're right that its a form of projection from the right...because anything they claim of us, they're really talking about themselves.JulieYBM wrote: Sun Oct 24, 2021 1:00 amConservatives are so good at controlling the narrative that they actually have dumbass reactionaries online thinking that Lefties are, like, weird anti-porn and censorship fiends when in reality that's just massive projection on their part.Shaddy wrote: Sun Oct 24, 2021 12:27 am It's just -- there's not a lot left to discuss in relation to this topic. A political group who will whine about being the victims despite having held the majority of government, and had a president that (mostly) sided with them. And that's not even getting into the Supreme Court which is the most conservative its ever been. They'll cry censorship, yet whine extensively about Critical Race Theory being taught in class or actively kick out members of the Republican party that dare won't side with Trump that election was stolen. Will whine about Cancel Culture, but only if the supposed "victim" is a millionaire, because only millionaires are allowed to have opinions after all (see Dave Chappelle).
Anyways...if it bothers you that politics is being discussed, there are literally hundreds of threads that are very much about Power ups or another discussion about how terrible the Funimation dub. There is literally no reason to go and try to shut this down, aside from being massively insecure when politics get brought up.

Yup, all great points. And I'll add just for any lurkers since I know people who lurk on these forums read my posts and then discover they're trans: that erotica you're self-inserting into as the girl? Totally normal...for a girl. Don't let anyone tell you "it's just a fetish!" Make that call for yourself! I would suggest being open to the idea that you, lurking poster, might not be a 'boy' at all.kemuri07 wrote: Sun Oct 24, 2021 12:03 pmAbsolutely. Its bad faith arguing. His last special The Closer spends 95% of the runtime being transphobic and he openly calls himself a TERF and supports Rowling. Trans Netflix employees tried to warn about releasing the special but the CEO ignored them. The trans employees at Netflix then staged a walk-out and some were fired.PurestEvil wrote: Sun Oct 24, 2021 12:37 pmHold up, did Chappelle say something bad?JulieYBM wrote: Sun Oct 24, 2021 12:22 pm Yup, all great points. What's with all the TERFs popping up in recent years? Did Just Kidding Rowling light a keg or what?

They've always hated us, they're just getting more vocal about it because they think our louder existence hurts them. Margaret Atwood is the latest person to become vocally TERFy because she thinks inclusive language like 'pregnant people' means that "We can't say 'women' anymore!!!!" No dipshit, we just don't want you excluding the existence of young girls, men, two spirit people and enbies who get pregnant.PurestEvil wrote: Sun Oct 24, 2021 1:18 pm What's with all the TERFs popping up in recent years? I encourage anyone to actually watch the special before passing any judgment, its honestly not nearly as bad as the folks who are "outraged" are trying to claim.

Pretty much. She's probably the most high-profiled member of the movement, and more than likely made it even more "okay" to be a bigot. Because "it's not about hating transpeople." No, of course not. It's about "showing concern that the movement might be overstepping itself" and "if we accept transgendered women as women, wouldn't that just make it easier for men to rape women?" Basically she covers up her bigotry with "concern trolling" in which she's really looking out for the trans community, but also she, a absurdly wealthy woman, is the true victim.PurestEvil wrote: Sun Oct 24, 2021 1:18 pm What's with all the TERFs popping up in recent years? Dave Chapplle kinda did the same thing: He used his platform to punch down against the trans community, all while attempting to coat it in understanding and "kindness." What's even worse about this is that Chappelle should know better than to do this since the reason he left his mega popular show in the first place is out of concern of how white people were interpreting his jokes: where they laughing with black people or at them. It's disappointing because he's normally good about this stuff: toeing the line between humor and being offensive to make astute points of what it means to be Black in America. But when he's claiming himself to be Team TERF, that's not what this is. This is an old wealthy man using his platform and punching down on any criticism. And god his whole contrast with "America caring more about LBGTQ people than Black people" because *checks memo, people cared more about DaBaby being homophobic than the fact that he killed someone. Is so laughably misguided.
I find the assertion that "its just jokes" to be lazy as fuck. It doesn't even apply to this context because Chapelle absolutely considers himself a cultural critic. That's the context of the Chapelle Show and its certainly the context of his last couple of Netflix specials, especially the one he did after George Floyd was killed. Humor is a way for us to make light about specific truths about America. That's why we find them funny, because comedians or shows present these situations we're familiar with (poverty, racism, trauma, work etc) in ways to make us laugh--because we agree. Humor can also be used to hurt and marginalized specific individuals by normalizing negative stereotypes. That's literally how neo-nazis are able to make their beliefs more palatable to a mainstream audience. It becomes easier to accept toxic beliefs if its "just jokes."
I am not saying that Dave Chapelle is on the level of a neo-nazi, far from it. What I'm saying is that people need to stop brushing this shit aside. If you fancy yourself transgressive humorist, than you need to accept the consequences of that. That's the whole point. The idea that comedians should be able to say what offensive thing comes out of their heads, yet not get called out on it because "HUUR FREE SPEECH" is fucking cowardice. Stand up to what you believe in, not hide behind your friend's dead body because you can't take what you dish out.
tl;dr edition: shit is wack, yo.

Here's the thing.."welll I didn't think it was that bad" doesn't dismiss the possibility that its offensive, especially if you're not looking at it from the perspective of the offended community. Here's the reality, I"m a straight black male and I more than acknowledge that I have blind sides when it comes to LBGTQ. So I ain't the best judge of character of what is or isn't offensive. Also saying something isn't "nearly as bad" implies that it's still bad so......goku the krump dancer wrote: Sun Oct 24, 2021 2:03 pm I encourage anyone to actually watch the special before passing any judgment, its honestly not nearly as bad as the folks who are "outraged" are trying to claim.
Look, if you enjoy the special, its your prerogative. You're not a homophobe for liking it and there are parts are funny. I'm not going to dismiss that. But I'm not going to dismiss people who the intended jokes are targeted at, or generalize them as being hysterical. You can like the special and also acknowledge that "yeah, this is kind of fucked up."

I think the part that is so fucked up from my perspective as a white-passing trans woman is that it just goes to show how ignorant Chapelle and his defenders are about the history and present of the trans community. Our leaders are black and brown people. Marsha P. Johnson, Sylvia Rivera (and more that I can't recall due to health issues) led our modern movement during Stonewall and into the decades following. Even now, a disproportionate number of black trans people are being murdered. Queer people are often framed as being exclusively white to divide our community (from within and between us and our cishet 'allies') by framing queerness as bourgeois and something bored white people do.
Even now, B. Pagels Minor--the black, pregnant trans person who led the Netflix trans walkout--was fired and thrown under the bus. All because they don't want their son to grow up in a world with content that hates their parent.

Re: Dragon Ball Super Gets Cancelled Overseas Over Sexual Harassment Claims
I haven’t watched Dave Chappelle’s special (comedians in general aren’t really my thing), so I’m not going to talk about it as though I have seen it, but I do think it’s weird how certain people keep trying to pass off the right to make offensive jokes as a free speech thing. Freedom of speech means that the government can’t arrest you for what you say. It doesn’t mean that people don’t have a right to criticize you for saying things they find offensive, or that private corporations like Disney can’t fire you for what you say (which was what happened with Gina Carano).
People need to stop using ‘freedom of speech’ as a crutch. Unless there are genuine demands for people like Dave Chappelle or Gina Carano to be arrested, freedom of speech is not applicable to their situations.

I wasn't trying to imply that it was all sweet and rosy, It's stand up comedy, of course its going to sting a little, especially considering who's performing alls I was just saying was that folks should watch it first before passing judgement to understand the full context.kemuri07 wrote: Sun Oct 24, 2021 2:17 pmHere's the thing.."welll I didn't think it was that bad" doesn't dismiss the possibility that its offensive, especially if you're not looking at it from the perspective of the offended community.
