Goku's relationship with his former friends

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

Goku's relationship with his former friends

Post by AnzuMazaki » Thu Jun 05, 2008 6:04 pm

I know this is a stupid thread but, does Goku still think of the humans as his friends?

I know he might do so but he seemed to be best friends with Vegeta rather than with ANY of 18's family at the end of DBZ.

Does he still like the humans considering that he left them.

Of course he does; it's just not shown as much as we'd like.

The end of the Boo arc did a pretty lousy job of showing Goku's relationship with his friends, since I don't recall him talking to anyone that wasn't Vegeta, Goten, or Pan.

If we choose to take GT into account, though, then it's quite obvious that Goku still cares greatly for his non-Saiyan friends. I mean, in the last episode, he even made sure that he visited Kame House to say goodbye to Kuririn and Roshi, which in itself says a lot. He didn't even say goodbye to his frikkin' family in that episode, aside from the 5-second "I mite cum back sumday LOLZ" line when he jumped on Shen Long to leave.

Goku's just so carefree that some might call him careless when it comes to maintaining friendships.

yeah.. he kinda goes off and does his own thing. Like the years after Buu was defeated, he was gone for like.. 5 or 10 years, and Bulma called him out for it and he's like 'wow, it really was that long?'.

Anyone find it weird how in the Toei filler when SSJ Goku met up with Tao Pai Pai again, he basically greeted him as if he were an old friend?

Because Goku had probably forgiven (but not directly to his face) Tao Pai Pai for what he did to Upa's father. Son Goku isn't the type of guy who holds grudges.

This is a guy that let five years slip by living off in the mountains with his wife and firstborn son before reuniting with Kuririn and the others. Not to mention they didn't even know of Gohan's existence till that very day when he arrived. He also thought nothing of suddenly leaving Chi-Chi and the rest of his family for a who knows how long to train the reincarnation of Buu. I don't think you need to be concerned that he doesn't still care for his friends. It's just his way. Obviously "keeping in touch" isn't his strong suit.

Goku lived most of his childhood without seeing or hearing from his only friend (Grandpa Gohan) and since he came out of it alright and was able to see his Grandpa a few times later in his life and was content with that, he probably assumed that not seeing your friends or loved ones for long periods of time was O.K. since you get to see them later in life. Pretty much it's just the way he grew up.

I agree with your point of view, Goku is the most laid back character in the series; He was late back from Namek because he was on a different planet learning a new technique, he also has the ability to turn Super Saiyan and instant transmission, and he still manages to lose touch with his friends for like... a decade!

It can't just be said that it is his Earth friends, When Bulma angrily confronted Goku for not staying in touch, and then Goku pointed out rather innocently that she had certainly aged. Vegeta was also there, and it didn't appear as though the two had seen each other in some time, although we don't actually know this. (Both being able to fly and all)

I think the problem is, that Goku is just too chilled, and it doesn't seem wrong to him to place some baby unhatched eggs before all his family and friends! :P

He isn't deliberatly like this, he is just naturally calm and can lose track of time! A trait which his friends certainly hate him for! - Then again if you think about it... Bulma could have just hopped into an air car and drove to Chichi's place...

Bulma does not really stay in touch neither, to prove it; all the Z gang were shocked with the arrival of Vegeta's child baby Trunks, except surprise spoiler Goku and jealous Yamcha.
She obviously didn't speak or have contact with any of them for the duration of her pregnancy nor even after the birth, opting to surprise them before they fought.
"Ok, use your instincts Kakarott. Right or Left? (Hmmm... I'd have to say... left.) Good. Then I'm going right!" (Vegeta to Goku as they try to find their way to free the others inside Buu - Episode: The Innards of Buu)

Makes me wonder if Goku'll find a totally hot human man telling him to 'Get fucked because he "cheated" on his wife and that she's his now' and he wouldn't care if Chichi found someone else.

I wonder if he cared if he found a divorce paper saying "Infidelity and unresoulved dfferences"

or if he read the news paper and found the names "ヤムチャ", "クリリン",
"天津飯", "チチ.アンデ-ソン", "孫悟天.アンデ-ソン" or whatever in the death notes and give a danm.

Because in the old days before he even found out he was a Saiyan and during the Saiyan saga, he actually GAVE A DANM about his friend's deaths.

I wonder if he would be heartbroken if he found out about his friends, ex, kids, in-laws and granddaughter dying.

What a lot of you guys fail to understand are these things. a lot of Son Goku's old friends live on opposite ends of the earth. I understand that Son Goku isn't a "keep in touch" guy, but everyone has a different story. I'm sure that no one would like to search the Earth for Tenshinhan or browse the oceans for Roshi's place. It's that simple. These guys can't just be with each other 24/7 .

Alright, on the names... lemme know if I'm right.
Yamcha, Krillian, Tenshinhan, Chichi, no idea, Goten and.. Veg?

And on a side note. Goku can read?

well.. while training with roshi he proved he can read with some difficulty... apparently gohan taught him how.

Goku still learns a bit throughout the series. In the beginning he didn't get the concept of money. By the end of the Z series, he was able to buy an ice cream for Pan just fine.

Uh... Krillin's death at the hands of Freeza is what made him go SSJ and he yelled at Tien to stop attacking Cell before he killed himself. So I fail to see any point to your post.

Also take into account that he saw Tenshinhan knock him out like he was an amateur. And I'd think that after being blown up and humiliated so badly, Goku had no reason to hate him. After all, Goku never intended to kill him, just beat him until he learned his lesson.

That's why I love Goku. <3

Yeah, but Goku has that unique ability to be able to touch his forehead with two fingers, and then re-appear in the place that he wants! It's called Instant transmission

I'm pretty sure Bulma says their two families hadnt spoken in 10 years. So that includes Vegeta.

I remember it as 5 years in both the dub and Japanese version of the anime. A flashback later in GT would later support this, as they all had a reunion at a beach shortly after Pan was born. Maybe it was the manga that went with 10 years?
