OOC characters in the FUNi dub: Does that annoy you

Post by AnzuMazaki » Fri Jun 06, 2008 10:17 pm

Does every non-popular character being OOC in FUNimation's dub piss you off.

I mean, Yamcha being some manwhore slacking surfer asshole who wants Chichi and 18 to himself in everything except Dragonball.
Yes I know about the "ummm...Yamcha-san cheated on Okaasan  " from Trunks but I feel that FUNimation exxagerated the "manwhore slacker who wants all the girls to himself " thing and took it WAY TOO FAR!!.

And they also made Bulma seem like a bimbo who flirts with everyone, they even made her flirt with Porunga.

and they used to make Chichi use a bitchy hateful tone at Goku.

What OOC stuff do you hate?

Never thought of Yamcha as a manwhore. Yes at first during season 3 he sounded like Malibu Kuwabara, but never came across as a manwhore. As for Chi Chi being bitchy, well, guy I knew from Japan described her in the anime, both Japanese and dub as "Stereotypical Japanese wife and mother" so kinda fits.

Mondo-Cool Kuririn much? Vegeta comes off more annoying in English, in Japanese he's more of a cool guy, and not as much as a hot head, like I agree with his arrogance.

I think the frivolous statements they (Funimation) put into Great Saiyaman's mouth really made him seem out of character. I mean they never really allowed any references to his past fights with the universe's super villains. :(

Ditto, in the Japanese he can handle himself more and his speeches are more bad ass than bitchy. In the American dub they used the spoiled prince angle too much. Which didnt make sense, considering he spent most of his life on his own.

The American dub made him out to be a whiney bitch that yelled all the time.

Vegeta. In Japanese, he's a person. With a sexy voice. In the dub, he sounds like he's smoked too much for his own good. Ohh, Funimation, you're killing me slowly and VERY painfully.

Piccolo too, with Toshio Furukawa he sounds evil but has a nice soft voice, Chris Sabat had to give him a loud and gruff voice. Scott McNeil's was cool but different, at least it conveyed the same sort of character for Piccolo.

The dub simply inflated the characters and made them have individual personalities really. I mean it's nice to be able to distinguish personalities. If they didn't do that, Tien, Yamcha, Chiaotzu, and like every other human would have the same personality.

It's touch-and-go for me. Some moments that could be called "OOC" are completely genius -- like the Ginyu Force bowling league. But then, every character has little things that might not have flown in the Japanese version. It's been awhile since I've watched the FUNi dub for more than an episode or so, though. . .

I disagree. Saiyaman is meant to be a parody of the super hero genre, and they translated it the way they saw most fitting. Which was to have him monologue like a buffoon.

"Pop goes the weasel!"
... Some people still refer to Freeza as "she", knowing better or not...

I know what you mean! They probably didn't hear all of the 'Him's and 'His's.

Is it just me, or does Chris Sabat seem to be channelling his Kuwabara voice in the redubbed episodes? I honestly, perfered his early season 3 Vegeta voice when he was trying (and failing) to sound like Brain Drummond.

I always felt that FUNi made Bulma seem like more of a bitch. I was watching (well, trying to watch. Couldn't get past the first few minutes) the Trunks Special in English and the way Bulma spoke to Trunks and Gohan seemed really mean. I don't know, maybe it's just mean.
Trying is the first step towards failure.

Yes, I agree. I meant to mention Piccolo too, but it slipped my mind. I think pretty much almost all characters Chris Sabat does irritates me, Vegeta and Piccolo the most.

I can't really remember her in the special, but she's pretty bad in early in-house stuff. However, I love her in the Dragon Ball dub (where I love almost every character's voice, except teenage Chichi).

In my opinion, post-Saga of Goku (even the redub isn't that great), Dragon Ball's dub is handled near perfectly. Strange how DBZ is, more times than not, so awful.

Scott McNeil is my favorite Piccolo.

Oh I totally agree. It's pretty much the only one of the three Dragonball series where I can watch it in English and not be completely disgusted.

The opening and ending being in English is what I concider an improvement, another thing I love about Funimation, they even did that Party Party song for Shin-chan.
