Dragon Ball - Las Peliculas [SelectaVision] Transfer

Post by BlueChi » Wed Dec 29, 2021 4:33 pm

Just a really simple enough question: is anyone here familiar with this specific BD bundle? Does it use the Funimation BDs of the movies or are SelectaVision's superior (imo, at least) transfer on the movie dual packs used instead? If the latter, that would make it an insta-buy for me, whereas the former... well, no.

I honestly don't know, but so far, SelectaVision has not been using Funimatiom's masters. I honestly am not in the-know like that, but I wouldn't expect them to have any connection to Funimation in that regard.

If anyone has these and wants to take screenshots, I can put up comparison shots with Funimation's and Toei's Blu-rays.

I do have their dual release of the TV Specials, and ignoring the extremely unfortunate 16:9 crop, they look pretty good. Funnily enough they also offer a 4:3 version on the same disc but it's strictly SD. So close, yet so far.
When I get an actual Blu-Ray drive instead of playing these on my PS4 I can get around to taking some screenshots for comparison purposes, if it helps.

Yeah, that should work for a comparison to Funimation's. But, to my recollection, the TV specials weren't part of Toei's Blu-ray release. Bummer. 😕

Not sure if they've been released on blu-ray by Toei but the TV Specials did get the HD remaster.

Do you think that you'd be able to put up some screenshots for a comparison to Funimation's Blu-rays?

The TV specials weren't included on TOEI's Blu-Rays no, but that's because Japan tend to bundle them with the series rather than the movies, which led some fans to (understandably) suspect a remaster of the series was on the cards.

Sadly that hasn't come to be, and as per tradition since TOEI's current box sets are the movies, the specials were omitted. Though considering western territories lump the specials in with the movies TOEI may have chose to remaster the specials for international territories (which we know they've catered to previously by creating Kai TFC), or for the benefit of hyping Super Broly by giving things like the Bardock special a theatrical run alongside the movie Gogeta debuted because they're fan favourite characters and in said movie.
Do you have any info about international non-English broadcasts about the Dragon Ball anime or manga translations/editions? Please message me. Researching for a future book with Dragon Ball scholar Derek Padula

Managed to get my hands on a rip of SelectaVision's Movie 7 and snapped some shots from it. Shame I couldn't get it uncompressed yet, but it's something that could serve for a quick comparison.

Check it out:

So... The Selecta Vision Blu-rays look a lot like the Funimation ones. The brightness on the Funimation release is a bit darker. Meanwhile, Toei's Blu-rays look pretty gross... I don't know about their technical aspects, but that tint looks disgusting to my eye.

Man... Well, hope this helps!

EDIT: Toei's Blu-rays don't look as horrific on my phone, but I was staring at these things in all their 1080p glory...

I don't remember the Funi BDs looking that| Had the idea they were much more... Orange Bricks-esque.
Thank you for the comparisons tho, and yeah, the Toei versions are definitely subpar.

Yeah, not a problem. I always did think that the Funimation movies didn't have any glaring faults like the orange bricks. But also, remember that they did a DVD release of the movies as well.

I'm super disappointed in Toei. I'm wondering if a simple brightness/color/tint adjustment on the TV would make them look good, or if they're just ruined. Again, on a tiny screen, they might look great. When they're up on a 65 inch TV--not so much.

It's heartbreaking to think that Funimation's 30th anniversary release might actually be better than a Toei Z Blu-ray release if this is their new standard (these and Boo Kai put these scary thoughts in my head).

Damn it... I guess I'll wait for Selecta Vision to release Z to see if maybe it's worth picking up.
