Gohan: has latent power even more than his father, Goku?

These Japanese movie promotions can be fudging hilarious at times.

I'm starting to get worried that the movie is just going to end up being Gohan Vs Cell 2.0 with the Gamas instead of Cell and some slice of life on the mix.

Suuure, I might actually believe it if it was about Cooler or Janemba or another villain who has established themself as very popular in the wider Anime fanbase.
At his core Zamasu is good like Shin, though I guess you could say he was so fastidious that it backfired. But you know, for this "Future Trunks Arc" you had to depict Zamasu and Trunks' inner conflict, right? If this was back when I was drawing the manga myself then I doubt if I could have done it. I mean, I'm not very good at depicting the characters' psychology on the page. So this all came together because now I only have to think up the story. [...] On my own, I doubt I would have been able to express Zamasu's fall to the dark side.

Broly was offered as a possible suggestion, due to the popularity of the character, and Toriyama then revisited the old movies and was inspired to create a story around him. I'm nitpicking here, but DBS Broly was absolutely a story he wanted to tell.

All of Super (and many elements of the original manga) started out as editorial ideas that were "kicked off" into fully detailed plots filled with Toriyama's own ideas. Super Hero may or may not be an exception, but I doubt that in itself is a factor in the quality of the writing.

This, to me, comes across as character marketing that magazine ads for DB films usually indulge in. The idea of Gohan surpassing his dad might play a role in the film... but it might not. I'd take it with a grain of salt.

I don't know about it being the most talked about movie but is there any evidence those would be more successful? Broly was one of the most popular villains and I believe only movie villain that ever ranked in the top 5 of any poll. Rebooting the next most popular movie villain might be considered more on the side of pandering than something many fans would be excited for.

I’m not saying he was forced into making a movie with Broly, but it wasn’t an idea he came up with on his own.

I'm saying the story itself was something Toriyama came up with on his own. Smaller character ideas and suggestions have been a part of Dragon Ball's history since its inception, and I'm pretty sure there's no clarification thus far on whether or not Super Hero has its own external ideas incorporated by Toriyama. Red Ribbon is already one nostalgic component.

I guess my point is that as far as "wanting to tell" goes, I'm not seeing a major qualitative difference.

The Red Ribbon already made a comeback in the Cell arc and they are not really know for having a huge fanbase, So i have a hard time seeing Toei pushing to bring them back, but who knows.

That one of the many things that bothers me about this movie it seems like Toriyamas sense of character design has completely deteriorated from his prime days it’s like he didn’t even try. I feel like Toyotaro could have drawn better villains for this movie and I hate that guy. :D

If they were to bring Janemba back I’d rather they make him a much bigger deal since you can do a lot with High end reality warping powers if they were to buff him.

I would definitely take Janemba over those rejects, if anything because he's more pleasing to look at. But I'd expect his personality to be completely overhauled so that he has, you know, an actual personality. Isn't he just a screaming monster in the movie? Boooring.

So was Broly btw and Toriyama did overhaul his personality so that he isn't just a screaming machine.

While that is true for the series, his designs for "videogame characters" show that he still has the skills to come up with cool characters designs.

One can only wonder why he doesn't put any effort in regards to characters for the series.

Yeah he seems to put more effort into other series designs especially the monsters for Dragon Quest.I will say i liked the fur weasel and spider monsters from the last movie.

Toriyama is known for simple designs and sometims he makes ones that are detailed. Saying he doesn't put effort in his character designs sounds kinda wrong.

Trust me, I know that Toriyama has always followed other people’s advice. That’s how Dragon Ball became a fighting manga in the first place. It just sounds like this is a movie that was made without much regard for commercial appeal, as opposed to Broly, which went out of its way to service the fans. The RRA alone are not a draw, unless Cell is involved.

I think is not fair to judge the Gamas only by their looks, remember Beerus in 2013? a lot of people didnt like how he looked, some even say things like he was a pokemon, and look how things turn out, Beerus ended up being one of the favorite things of the new dragon ball, for many his favorite character of the modern DB.

Yeah.

And his entire role after BoG is to serve as a comic relief.

So it doesn't really help your point.

People loved that scene where he destroys Zamasu so much just because they were craving for some content where Beerus isn't relegated to a simple comic relief character.

Why does Beerus even exist as a character? He doesn't do anything, he always finds an excuse to bail out of finishing off a villain, he could disappear until the long-awaited rematch and nothing would change. He's pretty much either a comic relief character or a sidelines battle narrator character.

I love the designs for Gamma 1 and Gamma 2 and I'm certain they will become fan favourites after the film comes out.

Image

They honestly look like cool and fun characters, I'd like them to be redeemed and become semi-recurring characters like Jaco.

Considering how much Toriyama loves parodying Superheroes (Supa-Man, Ginyu Force, Great Saiyaman, Jaco/Galactic Patrol) I think if he had the energy to draw one more original manga it would be about Superheroes... I wonder if Toriyama likes My Hero Academia?

That would be true if DB worked like other show but I think you must understand that DB is now a franchise more than a work of art, it doesn't have an endgoal, it just constantly exist as part of the culture like Superman.
It also has to do with Toriyama's writing, his character are introduced in an arc and reach full cycle in the same arc, Vegeta being the rare exception.

I still have some (major) concerns about this movie and the Super franchise in general.

Gohan being the Saiyan with most potential isn't exactly something renewing or refreshing at all.
It has been revisited so many times in the past (SSJ2, Ultimate), the only difference with Goku and Vegeta: it has been a while.
Those two should not always get main stage. True, but it should mean something: Gohan and Piccolo getting renewed attention only adds up if they REALLY become relevant again along with those other two. On the other hand, if Goku and Vegeta stay on Whis planet: how big can this Android-threat really be?

I mean Gohan, appeared to have returned, at last, again during the Tournament of Power at some descent level, willing to achieve the same heights as Goku.
Knowing he HAS the potential to do so. As we all know for so long.
He became captain of the team, only to end up having only relatively minor roles during the TOP, Broly, Moro and Granolah-arcs.

I hope i'm wrong here, i hope they do have the balls to make a show that's more focussed on the next gen-fighters.
I'm afraid they don't really will become relevant again on the longer term, but it's a one-movie-special that merely gives some fans that like these characters this illusion. Only to move back to the Goku- and Vegeta-show later on.

I was prepared to give the franchise the benefit of the doubt during 2018: second part of the anime was a lot better for me than the first part and Broly was a great movie. I still think they made a big mistake by not producing a real good entertaining 2D-anime in Broly-style later on in 2019. By that time the revival truely was at its peak. For some reason, ironically enough, they did not choose to give the fans what they truely deserved.

Now it's still kinda a mixed bag for me, together with the full CGI for this movie and the manga that's not going truely bonkers, i'm not exactly "Super" hyped for the time being. It feels like they just want to drag this on without real artistic purpose. Definitely if they won't bring the 2D-style anime back at all, and the chosen route is a debatable manga at best combined with a CGI-movie every two-three years. That's not what i call Dragonball-worthy.

If this movie fails, i hope they FINALLY understand they have to work for their money.
But it might very well be too late, as this revival will not last forever.

Yeah, it does feel stale for them to be emphasising Gohan again like "don't worry guys, THIS TIME he's gonna be super important and central to the plot". That worked alright for the anime's Tournament of Power, and although that arc developed him decently, he still didn't get the amount of attention some people expected (and many were just pissed that he didn't get a significant power-up or a W against Jiren, which he frankly didn't need or deserve). Then after being completely absent for Broly and most of the Moro arc, he gets another token "he's back" moment later in that arc only for him to do nothing substantial.

Gohan might genuinely be The Guy this time and save the day, but will it feel that meaningful if he does? I doubt it. As you say, the likelihood that this will be followed up in any future stories is low. Surely this will be a momentary diversion, then it will be back to the Goku-and-Vegeta Show as usual.
